Membership To all Norwood Hills Members and Family, We have been able to welcome 22 new families to Norwood Hills Country Club this season. We have seen tremendous interest again this year and expect that to increase over the next few weeks with the Ascension Charity Classic right around the corner. The tournament always brings tremendous exposure for the Club, and with that, increased outreach from potential members. We’re really hoping to finish the year strong, just as we did last year, welcoming as many new members as we can before the season comes to an end. There are still so many fun and exciting things planned over the next few months. If you have any friends or family who may be interested in membership, and you would like to invite them to experience one of our upcoming events, please reach out to me and I would be happy to coordinate. As always, if you ever need anything from me, or if there is anything I may be able to assist with, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Always happy to help in any way I can. We’ll see you all around the Club! Preservation Foundation Revitalization Campaign Update In July, the Norwood Hills Preservation Foundation made an appeal to all our members to consider donating to enable us to pay for two important projects: tree removal across the entire property and the East Course bunkers. The estimated cost for these projects is $500,000. The $50,000 check presented to General Manager/COO Dane McLaird (pictured on the cover) helped with the tree removal process and the new bunker left of #4 East green. Any money raised will take pressure off the Norwood capital budget. · For golf members, we asked each member to voluntarily donate $1,250 or more. · For social members, we asked each member to voluntarily donate $500 or more. As of August 1st, members have responded with donations of $37,000. Thank you to all that have supported our efforts in maintaining the many amenities Norwood has to offer. We need the support of all Norwood members. Your donations to the Preservation Foundation are tax deductible. Please donate today! If you have questions, please feel free to contact George Keller, president of the Preservation Foundation, at 314-749-5133. It’s been fantastic to see all of you out and about at the Club this Summer. We’ve had a lot of fun this season: on the course, at the pool, swim meets & happy hours, patio parties, tennis matches and pickleball, the 4th of July and so much more. August doesn’t slow down with another Patio Party, Friday Night Happy Hour, and Senior’s & Club Championships. Moving into September, it’s hard to believe that we are less than 30 days away from the Ascension Charity Classic, and our time to share our beautiful grounds and facilities on a global scale. This past month we have welcome both a new GM, Dane McLaird and a new Chef, Eric Simpson. Dane is rejoining the team here at Norwood after working in Kentucky as a GM for the last four years. Everyone is incredibly excited to have him here again, this time as Norwood GM, and look forward to all the things our team will accomplish together. We are also thrilled to have Chef Eric Simpson (pictured right) join our team. Many of you have had to opportunity to meet him and have shared in our excitement that he is a part of Norwood Hills. Eric was born in St. Louis and attended culinary school at Forest Park Community College. He worked and trained as a young chef under some incredible Chefs here in St. Louis, before moving to Wiscon and then KC. Chef Eric has worked in private clubs for the last 25 years and excited to bring all his knowledge and passion here to Norwood Hills. We have seen increased activity in the dining rooms, and it’s been wonderful to serve you and your families. We strive to provide you with excellent service each and every day you join us in our member dining spaces, be that the Bar, Champions Lounge, or Fairway Grille. Reservations are always appreciated and encouraged. We look forward to see you all soon! Sincerely, Amanda Scoggin Clubhouse Manager Clubhouse News
Hello Norwood Hills, I hope everyone is finding a way to stay cool during what feels like a never-ending heat advisory here in St. Louis. One way for you to stay hydrated during the month of August is by coming to enjoy our August ‘Wine of the Month’ and Specialty Cocktail. For the August Wine of the Month, we will be featuring Abadia de San Campio Albarino. This Spanish white wine was brought in for our June First Thursday Wine Tasting and was a huge hit, as everyone purchased at least one bottle! Not only will the Abadia de San Campio Albarino be our August Wine of the Month, but it has also been added to our wine by the bottle list, for you to enjoy any time. If wine isn’t your forte, let’s talk about our August Specialty Cocktail, the Deep Eddy Collins. This is a Norwood Hills spin on a very classic Vodka Collins cocktail. Our Deep Eddy Collins will include Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka, Simple Syrup, Club Soda, Lemon and Cherry. It’s the perfect refreshment after a hot day on the golf course! - Jordan Boettcher Food & Beverage

On June 14, we had a lovely Member-Guest event with the theme of Red, White and Birdie, honoring Flag Day. The event was chaired by our Past President, Ann Frawley. Ann’s committee including Mo Falwell, Mary Beth Fox, Denise Klevorn, Susanne Knese, Terri O’Donoghue, Rose Wells, and Sharon Winget did an outstanding job. A great day of golf and friendship was enjoyed by the 80 golfers who attended. On June 29 NHCC hosted Inter-Club play. We had 90 golfers attend. The Pro Shop Staff, headed by Brandon, Matt, Kyle, Bobby, Tyler, JoD, and Mike Powers did an outstanding job welcoming the players and getting us ready for tee off. As we have come to expect, but do not take for granted our very own Sherrie Doyel did a spectacular job coordinating the day’s events. Thank you to ALL. We have had our second Match Play day moving towards the culmination to our year end Match Play Winner. August 9, together with our 18-Hole Lady golfers, we will host the Dalhousie Country Club. We look forward to meeting them and showing off our beautiful NHCC. September 20, our fun theme day ‘Take Me Out To the Ballgame’ will be played. This year it will be chaired by Mary Beth Fox and Amanda Hammel. I am sure they will continue the past efforts of our members to make it a fun day! It is never too late to join our FUN group. 18-Hole WGA The 2023 ST LOUIS JUNIOR INVITATIONAL at Historic Norwood Hills Country was played on Thursday and Friday, June 15 & 16. The St. Louis Junior Invitational, established in 2019 by Bob Phillips and Jim McLaughlin, is one of the premier junior golf championships in the USA and has placed Norwood Hills on the map nationally. Recognized as a ranked junior golf championship, one player from both the young gentlemen’s and young ladies’ divisions earned the prestigious championship title and were presented the St. Louis Junior Invitational’s champion’s jacket. Also on site was Alonzo Byrd, presenting both winners with a special Ascension Charity Classic award. This was a 36-hole stroke play championship, men’s and women’s divisions, and featured players from 16+ states and Canada. A record eight (8) Norwood Hills players were accepted in the field and included Lyoto Bellon, Eric Ewing, Tess Guignon, Patrick Holdridge, Tim Lane, Aiden O’Keefe, Henry Robards and Harrison Zipfel. We are excited to announce this year’s young men’s winner was Harrison Zipfel, who carded a score of two under par over 36 holes. He is the first Norwood Hills player to win this championship. We would like to recognize our departed friend, Bob Phillips, for his dream in creating the best junior in the country, as well as Shawn Kelly, Joe Weinbauer and Jim McLaughlin for their hard work in showcasing our club. KSDK was onsite covering this championship as well as the Mizzou Men’s golf coach, University of Oklahoma golf coach and a number of other D1, D2 and D3 schools, following what might be our future PGA and LPGA players. The Tournament Committee is pleased to announce it made a noteworthy donation to both the Norwood Hills Historic Preservation Fund as well as PGA Reach, following the championship. If you want to learn more, please visit https://stlgolfjr.com or to volunteer as a tournament ambassador in 2024, please email Jim McLaughlin at jpm@stlgolfjr.com

Grounds & Greens 14 We are entering the home stretch of the 2023 golf season. This season has gone well for us. While our seasonal staff was good this year, we are still missing several key full-time positions. The absence of our irrigation tech, and a second assistant hampers our capabilities and forces us to use other staff to attend to jobs that need attention. Jordan has taken over Steve’s role on projects nicely, and he will be an asset for Norwood Hills for a long time. Jordan was on staff already when Steve retired, so his former position is open as well. We are managing with the bullpen by committee mentality, and will have to continue to do so as long as those positions go unfilled. The month of ugust will be spent prepping for the Champions Tour event. Jordan will start locating all our underground infrastructure in the areas of structures and signage. This includes all electric wire pulls, irrigation piping, drainage lines, county water supply, and any of the other numerous services that are underneath our property. This is a tedious and time-consuming task, but a necessary one. Dead trees continue to pop up and will need to be removed, all OB must be cleaned up and identified, volunteers recruited, and schedules set, along with numerous intricate details that go into making the event special. After completing several projects early this season we were able to finally start on East course bunkers. We are not as far along as I had hoped at the start of the season. The projects we completed at the start of the summer were not on my radar but were important to get done and enhanced Norwood’s property. When we finally started on 4 East we dealt with some weather events and equipment breakdowns that slowed us down. We are moving forward in the right direction and will continue after the Ascension event. The 2023 season has been a good teaching/learning season for many on the grounds staff. We have good people on the crew who will do well for Norwood Hills for many years. Hello Norwood Members! Can you believe it’s August already? Time flies by when we’re all having fun!
