INTRODUCERE

Chiar dacă publicația a

THE BEGINNINGS OF THE
PLANT TO THE YEAR 1980

The foundations of the plant were laid in 1943 near the locality of Colibași situated
not far from the town of Pitești. The first buildings were initially intended to manu-
facture engines and equipment for aeroplanes made in Brașov. In 1952, the plant
specialised in the manufacture of parts for trucks and tractors. The plant was re-
named after about a decade. The decision to develop a national automotive in-
dustry was taken in 1965, the solution consisting in producing cars under licence,
provided the lack of Romanian experience in the area. The auction conducted for
this purpose was won by Renault, who proposed a model that was then under de-
velopment: the Renault 12. The first pre-production vehicles came off the produc-
tion line on 3rd August 1968. The plant was inaugurated on 20th August 1968, and
the first model, the Dacia 1100, produced under Renault 8 licence, was manufac-
tured until 1972 in about 37,000 units. The launch of the Dacia 1300 was derived
from the Renault 12 and was an outstanding commercial success. The Dacia 1300
base model was developed in a wide series of versions over the 35 years of produc-
tion. The range was developed alongside the launch of a facelifted version, called
Dacia 1310 that saw several evolutions over the years, both of a stylistic and mech-
anical nature.

The history of the plant can be traced back to the year 1943, when its foundations
were laid near to Colibași, a locality situated 12 kilometres north of Pitești. The first
buildings were then supposed to host the production of engines and equipment for
planes manufactured at the IAR factory in Brașov. Some brick-constructed buildings,
whose facade was specific to the industril architecture of the first half of the 20th century,
are also found on the current premises of the Mioveni plant. From the end of the war to
the year 1949, the buildings would be used to store ammunition, then they would be set up
as repair shops for locomotives. In 1952, the plant specialised in the manufacturing of
parts for trucks and tractors. In 1963, the company initially known under the Romanian
name ‘Uzinele Vasile Tudose’ (translated in English as ‘Vasile Tudose Plants’) changed its
name to ‘Uzina de Piese Auto Colibași’ (abbreviated as ‘UPAC’) - translated in English as
‘Automotive Parts Colibași Plant’.

The agreement for the production of cars under licence was signed în 1966

The Romanian authorities took in 1965 the decision that a national automotive industry

the lack of Romanian experience in the field. Several western companies, among which

6th September 1966. The agreement signed by the two parties was valid for 10 years. The
decision that the new car plant should be built in Colibași, in the proximity of the already
existing plant – UPAC – would be taken ten days later. Works on the construction of the
Car Plant in Pitești started in the first months of the following year and were completed in
May 1968. The first pre-production vehicles rolled off the assembly line on 3rd August

The plant was inaugurated on 20th August 1968. The Dacia 1100 would be manufac-

car would be launched at the Paris Motor Show in October of the same year), the contract
between the Romanian state and Renault stipulated the temporary assembly of another
vehicle from the range of the French car manufacturer. If the Renault 16 initially seemed
preferred by the Romanian party, the final decision would be taken in favour of the Major
version of the Renault 8, a model whose purchase price was more reasonable for the Ro-
manian customers. The launch of the Dacia 1300 at the beginning of October would prove
to be a real commercial success both in Romania and in other countries from Eastern
Europe, where the model was exported since 1971. Another important moment in 1969
was the merge of the two enterprises existing at that time in Colibași - UPAC and UAP –

prima versiune pick-up adevărată produsă de Dacia. Modelul cu o sarcină utilă de 1.000 de
