SEPUP Issues in science

SEPUP is unique among the research-based science programs as the
only one that centralizes each unit on a socio-science issue.
All of the curriculum materials put standards based science content
in the context of personal and societal issues. The issues create the storyline so that the science
and engineering practices, the crosscutting concepts, and the science content are relevant and meaningful.

Each unit follows this instructional design to integrate scientific inquiry
with a thematic approach for teaching science in the context of personal
and societaly issues.

issues and physical science second edition

All students need to develop an understanding of science
and technology to make informed personal and community
decisions. Using Issues and Physical Science, students
learn how to gather and interpret scientific evidence about
issues of interest to them and their community. As a
result, they begin to appreciate the power and also some
of the limitations of science. They also begin to recognize
that science is much more than a set of answers to be
learned, but rather, a way of asking questions.

Issues and Physical Science may be purchased as a full-
year, discipline-based program in one hard bound book
or as units to create a customized scope and sequence.

ASSESSMENTS

Student progress is measured through assessments
embedded in the students’ typical work. These tasks assess
students on one of nine assessment variables and pair
with more typical formative and summative
classroom assessment.

LITERACY

Students must be literate to study science. In order to gain
scientific knowledge, students must be able to understand
and evaluate scientific material. This requires them to
possess the literacy skills necessary to read, view, and
articulate scientific thoughts. Our embedded strategies
help teachers mindfully increase student literacy.

DIFFERENTIATION

Because the SEPUP middle school program is research-based
it is developed, at its core, to differentiate for multiple learning
styles. This intentionally flexible approach to all program
activity types helps accomplish our goal that all students
achieve scientific literacy.

Implementing SEPUP

The SEPUP program has the ability to transform how our students learn science in Georgia
- but that transformation will not happen overnight. Where is the best place to start? How
do we ensure that our teachers will be supported?

We consistently see that schools who thoughtfully incorporate Professional Development
into their adoption plan are able to significantly accelerate the implementation process.

Suggested PD Plan for Implementation

PD needs vary greatly so we tailor sessions to best meet each school’s needs

year one (over 2–4 sessions)

• S hift from teacher to student driven classroom
• U sing overarching issues as content context
• Focus on engaging students in the Practices
• N otebooking & Student Ownership
• U sing a spiraling curriculum
• Explore criteria setting with Evidence and Trade-Offs assessment variable

year TWO (over 2–3 sessions)

• Deeper focus on assessment and student work
• More robust differentiation and literacy supports
• Making Crosscutting Concepts explicit
• Addressing misconceptions
• Group Interaction and Communication
• Guided dialog across grade level

Transition to Internal PD Support

• Select internal leadership
• Area based cohorts for collaboration
• SEPUP Summer Academy
• Train the Trainer

Lab-Aids® 17 Colt Court, Ronkonkoma, NY 11779

Professional Development

Our professional development trainings are like our programs — engaging, hands-on,
and personally relevant.
Workshops and implementation days are taught by current SEPUP teachers who are
uniquely qualified to support schools new to the SEPUP program.

Topic Menu

Customize your PD from this list of common topics or work with us to create one of your own.
Science Georgia Standards of Excellence
Unpacking Florida specific standards using our units as exemplary models for best-practice
science inquiry instruction.
Learning Cycle and Differentiated Instruction
Course design is based on a 5E supported learning cycle model. Courses use
socioscientific issues to guide each unit’s storyline, provide a relevant context, and to
motivate all students. Detailed support for working with diverse learners is included.
Classroom Management
Discussions and lesson modeling are highly customized based on school needs. Typically
covered topics are management of student lab activities and equipment, facilitating effective
group work and using the Teacher Edition to look at possible lesson accommodations.
Embedded Literacy
Students need frequent opportunities to develop their language skills and the science
classroom provides innumerable opportunities. Embedded literacy supports allow
teachers to make the most of those opportunities.
Assessment
Using the SEPUP formative assessment system, students produce work that can be scored
using rubrics developed for nine major areas of science education. Teachers will examine
support for assessment and will discuss and moderate samples of actual student work.

MORE THAN A TEXTBOOK — A FULLY INTEGRATED LEARNING SYSTEM.

Lab-Aids has been dedicated to providing science teachers with programs that help facilitate
a more meaningful and relevant experience in the classroom. Our SEPUP programs engage
students by motivating them to explore, discuss and analyze the ideas they learn.

IT ALL WORKS TOGHETHER

Lab-Aids SEPUP Middle School Programs build on Gardner’s work with multiple intelligences by
incorporating di erent types of activities. These activities include investigations, hands-on labs,
problem-solving, computer simulations, projects, readings, modeling, and role playing to
facilitate student mastery of essential science content and process skills.

COMPLETE SEPUP CURRICULUM EQUIPMENT PACKAGES INCLUDE:

1. Printed and online student text available separately 5
to customize for each classroom size.

2. All the equipment needed to run every lesson.
Students work in groups of four, as pairs, or
individually depending on the activity.

3. Valuable online teacher resources include 2
ongoing professional development, tools to
di erentiate instruction, literacy strategies
and assessment.

4. Specially designed “Signature Items” like the
Maracondo Fever game board are unique to the
SEPUP Program.

5. Plastic tray inserts help keep materials organized. 6
This feature makes it easy to identify missing 4
components and greatly reduces

THE FUTURE OF SCIENCE EDUCATION IN GEORGIA

It’s not a textbook. It’s not a kit. It’s a program.

When students are fully engaged in an authentic inquiry task they are actively doing,
actively thinking, and actively discussing with their peers. While hands are engaged,
minds are too — questioning, sorting through input, and making connections to the
lesson’s essential questions.

Each middle school unit addresses a real-world issue facing our communities and
allows for students to develop evidence-based solutions. These issues range from
personal medical issues, such as whether to be tested for a genetic disease, to
societal issues such as the sustainable use of resources.
