The Wright Brothers’ Aeroplane

by Orville and Wilbur Wright from The Early History of the Airplane
In 1903, aviation pioneers Orville and Wilbur Wright, known as the
Wright brothers, completed the first flight of a controlled, heavier than
air manned flight. They later wrote a book about the development of
their airplane. This passage is about the first flight.
-----------------------------
The first flights with the power machine were made on December 17,
1903. Only five persons besides ourselves were present. These were
Messrs. John T. Daniels, W. S. Dough, and A. D. Etheridge, of the Kill Devil

Life-Saving Station; Mr. W. C. Brinkley, of Manteo; and Mr. John Ward, of
Naghead. Although a general invitation had been extended to the people
living within five or six miles, not many were willing to face the rigors of
a cold December wind in order to see, as they no doubt thought,
another flying machine not fly. The first flight lasted only 12 seconds, a
flight very modest compared with that of birds, but it was, nevertheless,
the first in the history of the world in which a machine carrying a man
had raised itself by its own power into the air in free flight, had sailed
forward on a level course without reduction of speed, and had finally
landed without being wrecked. The second and third flights were a little
longer, and the fourth lasted 59 seconds, covering a distance of 852 feet

over the ground against a 20-mile wind.

After the last flight the machine was carried back to camp and set down
in what was thought to be a safe place. But a few minutes later, while we
were engaged in conversation about the flights, a sudden gust of wind
struck the machine, and started to turn it over. All made a rush to stop it,
but we were too late. Mr. Daniels, a giant in stature and strength, was
lifted off his feet, and falling inside, between the surfaces, was shaken
about like a rattle in a box as the machine rolled over and over. He finally

fell out upon the sand with nothing worse than painful bruises, but the
damage to the machine caused a discontinuance of experiments.

3. VOCABULARY

A. Direction; You will see these words in the passage. Match the words

below with definitions in the chart.

Cargo Airport Control tower Taxi

Runway Long-haul Terminal Cockpit

Conveyor belt Checked luggage Business class Overhead compartment

Vocabulary Chart

Word Definition

1. This is the building where all flights take off and land,
usually located on the outskirts of a city.

2. Terminals are situated inside the airport building; it’s
where passengers are able to get on and off the plane.
Most often terminals are separated by international and
domestic departures.

Word Definition

3. This is a piece of land that pilots use to take off and land
the plane, it’s a specific length, and well lit at night for
flights landing in the evening.

4. This is the term used when planes drive around, either
driving to the runaway before take off or heading to the
terminal building after landing.

5. These are usually international flights that are longer than
6 hours. You might be traveling from north to south, luckily
avoiding any jet lag, or across the world from east to west

or west to east passing through many time zones!

6. These are situated above the seating area in a plane where
passengers can place their checked luggage. These should
be stored away during take off and landing but can be
opened during the flight.

7. Offer more comfortable seats, more interesting food
options, and priority to board the plane before many
others.

8. People who work here have communication with all the
planes taking off and landing at the airport and make sure
each plane if following the correct route and has a specific
time and location to land, ensuring the safety of all planes
and passengers.

9. Put simply, hand luggage is what you take on the plane and
checked luggage is what has to go in the hold of the plane
because it is too heavy or too large. You need to check
this luggage in as you arrive at the airport. Hand luggage is
placed in the plane in lockers above the seats, and you'll
have access to this luggage for the entire journey but will
need to store it away for take off and landing.

10. This is the front of the plane where the pilot and co-pilot
sit; everything is controlled from this room. No one other
than flight attendants are allowed into the cockpit.

11. This is a moving belt in the baggage claim area where all
luggage pieces are placed in order for passengers to pick
up after they've arrived at their destination.

12. The cargo is where the baggage is kept on the plane,
including suitcases, boxes, sporting equipment, musical
instruments, etc.

4. GRAMMAR : FUTURE FORMS

Level: intermediate

When we know about the future, we normally use the present tense.

1. We use the present simple for something scheduled:

We have a lesson next Monday.
The train arrives at 6.30 in the morning.
The holidays start next week.
It's my birthday tomorrow.

2. We can use the present continuous for plans or arrangements:

I'm playing football tomorrow.
They are coming to see us tomorrow.
We're having a party at Christmas.

3. We use will: when we express beliefs about the future:
It will be a nice day tomorrow.
I think Brazil will win the World Cup.
I'm sure you will enjoy the film.

to mean want to or be willing to:
I hope you will come to my party.
George says he will help us.

to make offers and promises :
I'll see you tomorrow.
We'll send you an email.

to talk about offers and promises:
Tim will be at the meeting.
Mary will help with the cooking.

4. We use be going to:
to talk about plans or intentions:
I'm going to drive to work today.
They are going to move to Manchester.

to make predictions based on evidence we can see:
Be careful! You are going to fall.

(= I can see that you might fall.)
Look at those black clouds. I think it's going to rain.
(= I can see that it will rain.)

5. We use will be with an -ing form for something happening before and after a
specific time in the future:

I'll be working at eight o'clock. Can you come later?
They'll be waiting for you when you arrive.

6. We can use will be with an -ing form instead of the present continuous or be
going to when we are talking about plans, arrangements and intentions:

They'll be coming to see us next week.
I'll be driving to work tomorrow.

7. We often use verbs like would like, plan, want, mean, hope, expect to talk about
the future:

What are you going to do next year? I'd like to go to university.

We plan to go to France for our holidays.
George wants to buy a new car.

8. We use modals may, might and could when we are not sure about the future:
I might stay at home tonight or I might go to the cinema.
We could see Mary at the meeting. She sometimes goes.

9. We can use should if we think there's a good chance of something happening:

We should be home in time for tea.
The game should be over by eight o'clock.

Listening Tips

Study the following listening tips below. They may help

you do listening tasks more effectively.

1.Pre- 2.While

Listening Listening

3.Post-

Listening

1.Pre-Listening

☞ Think about the topic of the text you are going to
listen to. What do you already know about it? What
could possibly be the content of the text? Which
words come to mind that you already know? Which
words would you want to look up?

☞ If you have to do a task on the listening text,
check whether you have understood the task
correctly.

☞Think about what type of text you are going to

listen to. What do you know about this type of
text?

☞Relax and make yourself ready to pay attention
to the listening text.

2.While Listening

☞ It is not necessary to understand every single word. Try
to ignore those words that you think are less important
anyway.

•☞ If there are words or issues that you don't understand, use
your general knowledge as well as the context to find out the
meaning.

•☞ If you still don't understand something, use a dictionary to
look up the words or ask someone else for help.

•☞ Focus on key words and facts.

•☞ Take notes to support your memory.

•☞ Intonation and stress of the speakers can help you to
understand what you hear.

•☞ Try to think ahead. What might happen next? What might
the speakers say, which words might they use?

2.Post-Listening

☞ Think about the text again. Have you understood

the main points?

☞ Remember the speculations you made before you

listened. Did they come true?

☞ Review your notes.

☞ Check whether you have completed your task
correctly.

☞ Have you had any problems while listening? Do you

have any problems now to complete your task?
Identify your problems and ask someone for help.

☞ Listen again to difficult passages.
