Adjunct Certification- Reflection Essay

The Adjunct Certification course has been a wonderful learning experience. I’ve
met new faculty from other disciplines and learned that we all share the same passion,
and also similar classroom challenges. We’ve had great discussions on topics such as
millennials, challenging students, classroom strategies, and we have received useful
feedback. I’ve learned new techniques to use in the classroom and online. The book,
along with the instructors teaching made for a good balance of reading and
participation. Becoming the student this semester allowed me a different perspective
into D2L. I gained insight into how my students interact within D2L, and challenges that
they may face. Also, moving around D2L as a student allowed me opportunities to
better build my online and hybrid classes.

I’ve tried to incorporate each week’s material into my classroom. For example,
how to work in a group and group activities, student motivation, exit tickets such as
3,2,1, and being more vigilant with preparatory activities are a few of the topics that I
have incorporated. I’ve talked to the students about the importance of group work, and
the skills that we may use when working in groups. We’ve used think/ pair/share, and
the jigsaw technique. To help motivate my students, I always try to learn their names,
and I have engaged in conversation before and after class about things that they want
to talk about and to let them know that I’m interested in who they are. The preparatory
activities have led to more engaging conversations and completion of assignments. I’m
also working harder to ask questions that allow for higher thinking and learning. The

syllabus snapshot is a great resource that I plan to use on my first day of class next
semester.

This program has made me more effective by giving me tools and techniques to
teach online and in class. From the first day of class to the end of the semester, there
are many resources that can be utilized. We were given a plethora of information, and
I’m excited to go back through and review them so that I can build them into my future
classes. The new media information, fun websites, and apps will make for more
engaging activities. This course has also given me a renewed excitement for teaching.
With all the new ideas from my instructor, my colleagues, the book and worksheets, I’m
inspired and eager to apply them. Because I was the student, and teacher this
semester, I can better relate to the juggling that my students encounter. I can
appreciate the hard work and balance that they encounter. Utilizing the BOPPPS
technique will also help me be more organized and prepared for lessons, thus leading to
more effective teaching.

This course was full of valuable information and lessons, and exceeded my
expectations of what would be covered. I have explored new websites and lessons,
and look forward to using the tools and techniques. I plan to take the complete D2L
online certification course to further my D2L training. Any professional development
that allows adjuncts to come together from other disciplines and campuses would be
beneficial, but having online opportunities will allow those who are not able to travel.
