INTERSCHOOL TRACK MEET
, »»p>»<8iigS«3B8B The highlight of the track sea
ml son was the Interschool Track
Meet on March 17th to which
— ------- i wW schools throughout the colony
sent teams to compete in track
and field events. The HKIS
girls were the overall champions,
being first in A and B grade
and second in C grade. The boys
were runners up in A grgde.
In doing so, they managed to
surpass even those more exper
ienced teams from the larger
schools.

Back: Arthur Leadingham, Ed Obayashi, Frank Jent, Dave Christian, Phil Cheney, Barry Laubach, Dennis Minich,
flic k Brackmann, Alex Koperberg, Scott Lazenby, Jon von Behren, Mr. Burns.
Front: Steve Hoelscher, Bob Wingfield, Derek Frost, Steve Mason, Paul Schmidt, Mark Brackmann, Kurt Braegger.
CROSS COUNTRY
Along the roads in Stanley, up the steep, slippery steps of the Chinese
village, over puddles, across Stanley Beach, up the gutters on the side of
the hill, the HKIS cross country team ran its way to victory. The A team
placed first, the B team sixth, and the C team third. Outstanding individual
runners included: Alex Koperberg, first in A grade; Dave Christian, second
in A grade; Rick Brackmann, third in A grade; Steve Hoelscher, third in
C grade; and Kurt Braegger, fourth in C grade.
HKIS' swimming team, despite the problems of
finding a place to train, of having a limited number of
participants, and of getting a late start, did remarka
bly well for its first year.
Back Row 1: Bill Ashley, Bob Wheatley,
Roy Leung, John Sandborg.
Row 2: Leslie Tang, Ed Obayashi, Lisa
Obayashi.
Row 3: Wendy Liddiard, Kathie Booth,
Lynn Kasala.
Row 4: Dee Dee Murphy, Dave Landau,
Cathy Kasala.
Front Row 5: Chris Winne, Diane Kasala,
Bill Whitehurst.
A team was organized under the coaching
of Mrs. Rose, and trained at Victoria Pool.
Having competed in only a few meets,
individual swimmers on the team often
placed in the top six,- however, as a group,
they lacked the depth necessary to take
any team championships.
mm This fall the tennis team was again able to
use the courts at the Repulse Bay Hotel, as well as
our one in the gym, for their practices. Under
Mr. Brackmann's coaching, the team placed exactly
in the middle of the 13 team HKSSA Tennis League
with seven victories and five defeats.
In the individual singles tournament this spring,
Mark Schmidt was runner up, but was defeated in
the finals 10-8 and 6-4.

INTRAMURAL SPORTS
The other half of the sports
program at HKIS is devoted
to intramural sports. In
these sports, we play as
teams w ith our friends,
against our friends. We
also learn the importance
of good organization, the
importance of working to
gether as a team, and the
importance of fair play. In
these sports, fun and fe llo w
ship are emphasized rather
than the constant training
for the improvement of skills
found in interschool sports.
Intramural sports played after
school in the gym included:
boys' basketball, girls'
basketball, boys' volleyball,
girls' volleyball, boys' bad
minton, and girls’ badmin
ton. On the fourth floor
covered area pingpong and
shuffleboard were played.
Softball for both boys and
girls, and flag football for
the boys were held at St.
Stephen's sports field in
Stanley.
VOLLEYBALL
BASKETBALL
On February 28, members of
grades 3-12 took a day off from
school and made the trip to the
government stadium for HKIS's se
cond annual intramural track and
field day. Everybody decided we
could have picked a better day to
"skip out" because most of the
time was spent keeping warm.
However, in between, we were
out on the track and field, winning
our events, resulting in the Sopomore
class placing first. Seniors second.
Juniors third, and Freshmen last,
in the Senior division. Grade 8
took first in the Junior division.
Individual champions for the day
included Becky Christian, Margaret
Ryan, and Jon von Behren for
Junior High, and Alex Koperberg
and Lisa Luk for Senior High.

Intramural Cross Country
Intramural cross country, held on January 24, was
again interclass competition. Although the freshmen
may not have had the skill and know -how to win
the track meet, they did have the determination and
endurance to run the South Bay Road course and
w in the cross country. In the junior division, the
eighth grade again came first. Individual winners
were Ann Christian and Alex Koperberg in the senior
division, and Becky Christian and Kurt Braegger in
the junior division.
