GRADE This past year was very exciting and interesting. We
did lots of things in addition to regular classwork. We
went to Aberdeen Fisheries where we saw rainbow trout,
eels, and a hammerhead shark. We went to Lai Chi Kok
Zoo where we saw all kinds of animals. On December 14,
we went to the Kai Ming School which is located in a very
small village in the New Territories. We wanted to bring
Christmas cheer to the farm children there. They gave us
corn, egg plant, eggs, and other delicious vegetables. In
February, Mrs. Ramsay gave the class a surprise Valen
tine’s Day party. We ate ice cream and cookies, played
Seven-Up, and passed out valentines. We also took a
guided tour through the P. Lorillard cigarette factory in
Kowloon.

We studied many subjects and learned a lot. We THIRD
wrote stories and poems and presented them on a
classroom T.V. screen. Pen Pals in a Grade 3 class in a
school in Dallas, Texas wrote to us. We replied, telling
them about our school and Hong Kong. There was a
keen interest in living things. Seeds grew into plants
and there were many animal visitors, including toads,
chickens, hamsters, parakeets, insects and snails.
At Christmas other grades came to see our Nativity
Play and everyone had lots of fun at the Christmas
party.
We shared two field trips with our Grade 3
“colleagues” of Room 306, visiting Aberdeen Fisheries
and Lai Chi Kok Zoo and the fire station.

GRADE In November our class went on a field trip to the
fisheries in Aberdeen. When we were at the fisheries
nobody liked the smell-fish, fish, fish. T hen we went
to the Lai Chi Kok Zoo in Kowloon. Everyone bought
some peanuts and fed the animals. For Social Studies
we made a Metropolis out of egg cartons, plastic
buildings, and paper. We also bought two young
evergreen trees and put them around the school, to
help beautify it. For Christmas we helped raised
money for the poor children. In art we made a mural
of a story in our reading book. T he name of the story
was the “ Greased Pig Race.” We had four reading
groups; the Monkees, the Jaguars, the Dinosaurs,
and the Tigers.
Front Row: D uane D onnelly, C hris Pero, Rusty Rasm ussen, K evin Salter, John W eigle, Scott M ason, D oug Jahn, Carlos Ozorio

Teacher: M rs. Burns.

In Social Studies we learned about famous people SECOND
like Abraham Lincoln and talked about things like
cowboys and Indians. We learned about wheels and
pulleys in science and about why there is day and
night. We learned about God and His people. In
math we learned how to use hundreds.
We went to the M attel Toy factory where we saw
puppets, spacemen and dolls. We also went to the
Lai Chi Kok Zoo and the Dairy Farm.
We had a Valentine’s Day party. We gave cards to
all our friends. We had a lot of fun this year. Why?
We had a funny teacher, that’s why.

Teacher: Mrs. Bentley.

GRADE We did a project for each unit in science. When we
learned about the seasons, we drew pictures and
collected leaves. In another unit we learned where heat
comes from, so we made thermometers. We also did a
candle experiment to show that a fire needs air to
burn. We liked religion because we wanted to learn
about Jesus, and m ath because if you don’t learn math,
when you grow up and someone asks you something
about math and you don’t know it they’ll laugh at you.
We had field trips to the Dairy Farm, and the zoo.
At the zoo the bears were trying to get out of their
cage and the lion was snoozing. It seemed as if the
lion was saying, “ Children, go away and let me sleep.”
We liked to take field trips because when you go on
a field trip you don’t have school.

W e’re the first graders of Room 302. Lots happened to FIRST
us this past year. First we learned that the first grade was
hard work. It was hard to sit still and not talk, but Miss
Duval kept reminding us, so we followed the rules most
of the time. The most important thing we learned was
reading. We had trouble learning the vowel sounds and
how to blend sounds together, but finally we learned to
like reading our reading book, signs, library books, and
newspapers. We had a lot of fun making up sentences,
then paragraphs, and then stories of our own. We made
new friends and played games with them at recess. We
studied the different seasons as they happened. In winter
we learned about snow; some of us hardly knew what it
was because we had never seen it. In spring we learned
about the flowers that start growing then. We always kept
our bulletin board covered with pictures from magazines,
because that is one way we learned.

GRADE When we first came to school some of us were scared.
We didn’t know what would happen. We didn’t know the
names of any of the children, or even the teacher’s name.
Soon we learned the names and made friends. We found
out that the teacher’s name was M rs. Wells. She was very
nice. In January, she had to leave, so Mrs. Abdallah came
to be our teacher. We liked her a lot, too. School was fun.
We each had our own little desk. They were painted blue
and brown. We learned how to write sentences. We talked
about all the vowel sounds every morning. We learned fun
words like “tintinabulation.” Now we know a lot of math.
We can add and count to 100. We learned about God in
Chapel. We liked to hear the Bible stories. We learned how
to color and how to tell time. We especially liked art with
M rs. Mache and music with M r. von Behren. We all
worked hard because we wanted to pass into the second
grade.

We all had to agree that we had reservations about leav
ing home for the first time, but as we made friends and
began to learn new things we looked forward to every new
schoolday. In our three sessions we have kept an attend
ance of around 42 pupils. As we felt sad to see some leave
us in their moving away, we in turn were happy to welcome
new faces. T hus the num ber in each session was kept up to
14 most of the time. We were proud to be the first class
to use the large, bright classroom, and the fine equipment.
T he open courtyard just outside our room has provided
us with an ideal place for outdoor play and learning. We
are sorry we cannot tell you all we have done, but when
we mention singing, creativity, games, rhythms, Reading
Readiness with a special book, Modern Math, Phonics,
Bible lessons, science, social studies, and story time, do
you believe that we have been busy? In all of this we have
been making friends, and hope we have learned to be more
considerate and thoughtful of others.

This was our beginning, and although the first chapter
has ended, we look forward to the continuance of a new
reality with a purpose, Hong Kong International School.
For the Seniors, graduation opens a new chapter in
their books of purpose. For the faculty, an enrichment
of their purpose is awaiting them. For the underclassmen
and elementary pupils, new opportunities to create
their purpose are being made ready for next September.
May the God of all beginnings be with us this sum
mer as we take a pause in the fulfilling of our individual
purpose.
