HKIS-Reunion-68-69-Memories

HKIS-Reunion Memories compiled by Christy McCaskill

I, David John Landau, being of sound mind and body (ha!), do hereby leave my few worldly possessions
to the following: to Steve Adcock I leave my Star of David, hoping he will eventually see the light; to Paul
Robbins I leave the assurance that he’s not really a little kid; to Stefan Fox I leave a tin of pitted prunes
with the assurance that they really do look like big raisins; to Alfie Raubitschek I leave my government
assignments, since he already has my history assignments from last year; to Pete Lipschultz I leave my
deck of marked cards that have been helping my “luck” in the last few months; and to my parents,
teachers, and friends I leave my sincere thanks for having put up with me, and fond memories of the past
year.
Career goal: Work in the field of restaurant and hotel management.
Pet Peeves and Phobias: Prejudices, of which we see more than enough here in Hong Kong. I hate
having to be choked all through winter by a school tie. Long hair on boys is the business of the individual
concerned, and not anyone else’s business.
Interests and hobbies: Anything that’s fun.
Parting “Message” to the faculty: After senior teaching day, I can’t see how you do it, without going
insane. There should be an award for any teacher who manages to teach high school for five years or
more.

* * *

I, Barbara Lee, being of sound mind do hereby leave to Lisa Luk my American History notes, to Amy
Munn I leave the minute hand of my watch and a foot tap, to Yvonne Li, I leave a South Sea-Pearl ring (she

College: Whittier College, Whittier, California.
Career: Social Worker.
Phobias: Cockroaches.

remember any of it when I am out of school.

* * *

friends my best wishes for a promising new year next September.

Greisen, a poisoned Picnic bar; to Anne Boehmke, I give my old Bible; and finally to Grace Wang, I give my

Favorite HKIS Memory: In 1967 HKIS was all new, and we were new to each other -
every day was an adventure. So many memories...I remember the long Zen-like
silences in Mr. Mahlke's English class after he posed a question. Madame Traub's "he
too shall pass" resolve in French. And my confusion as I shifted roles between U Thant
in the simulated United Nations and George Wallace in the Mock 1968 Presidential
Election.

After graduation: I worked, studied and travelled all over the United States

discovering the country I didn't know. Received degrees from Drake University (8 year

plan) and the University of Illinois. Married, raised a son, Ian, now 32. Unmarried.

Retired from a career in Organizational Development. Married my college sweetheart,

Connie, and enjoy our new family. We have twin girls (now Sophomores at the College

of Wooster). I'm loving my career as a fine arts photographer (Stephen Adcock.com)

and living the good life in Brooklyn, NY. In the intervening years since graduation I've

kept some contact with Gregg, Dennis, John Strouss, and Sheryl. I'm very excited to

begin again with my classmates and make many new friends.

Other Things to Share: Sober since 1975.

for 20 years developing and running a graduate program in Applied Biosciences.
Retired from the UA in 2009. Became Executive Director for an environmental non-
profit for 8 years and retired again (perhaps finally?) in 2016.

Other Things to Share: I started weaving the first time I was in graduate school to
keep from going nuts and am an active member of the Tucson Handweavers and
Spinners Guild. Steve and I both watercolor and spend much of our time on vacation
doing water color sketches on our walking tours. So far we have walked coastal trails in
Cornwall, Wales and the Isle of Wight, and last year we walked the Nakasendo Way
from Kyoto to Tokyo.

Spouse: divorced
Children: two
Grandchildren: six

Favorite HKIS Memories: Dancing at the Godown and the Den, joyriding
in Pete Swaine's car, hanging out at Rick Hum's listening to Jefferson
Airplane, alley shopping with Sheryl Scarbrough and Debbie Jones, long,
long talks with Tay Bosley, and talking on the phone for hours with Brenda
Oliver.

After Graduation: After graduating from HKIS in 1969, I began

college in Mankato, Minnesota. Sheryl Scarbrough (Bomsta) and I ventured

into the unknown together there as we both had relatives in Minnesota. I

transferred first to George Washington University…where I hung out with

Mike Swaine in Chinese language classes, and then to the University of

Minnesota, where I got a BA in Political Science. I returned to Mankato

State and got a BS in Social Studies Education, with a minor in Spanish.

After a summer in Sweden with my folks, I taught school in Hartington, NE

for a one year.

Significant Life Events: From Nebraska I decided to move back east
and lived in northern Virginia for the next 20 years. I met my husband, Ron
Allen, when I was working at the Xerox International Training Center in
Loudoun County, VA. We married in 1978. Daughter Jennie arrived in

164

1979, and son Charlie in 1981. I began substitute teaching and then began
working at the public library. I was the children’s librarian and story lady.

After my first marriage ended, I relocated to
northern California. Enough said. Moved to Florida in 2000, remarried, and
taught Middle School Social Studies until I retired in 2012. I (alone, sadly)
moved to North Carolina to be near my daughter and grandkids in 2017.
Jennie has three boys and works part time as a preschool teacher. Son
Charlie, after 12 years in the Navy, works and resides in Orange Park, FL
with his sweet family and three daughters.

I made one trip back to Hong Kong, in 1996,
with Sheryl…who else!? I travelled to China proper in 2007, when the
country was gearing up for the Olympics the following year. Such fun. I
have been fortunate enough to travel to Chile, Israel, Italy, Spain, Sweden,
and the Caribbean in the intervening years.

As no doubt many of you have, I spent a few
years caring for my aging parents. Mom died in 2012 and dad in 2017.
They are interred at Arlington National Cemetery. My sister, Nancy, moved
north after I did and lives nearby. Brother, John, lives in Panama City,
Florida, still with the US Air Force, though now as a civilian.

Bucket List: Alaskan cruise, Canadian Rockies train trip,

meet the Dalai Lama, and return to visit Israel.

Note to Classmates: I look back with great fondness to my

experiences with many of you at HKIS. Good times!

completed my undergraduate studies at University of Hawaii.

Psychology-1999), working as a psychologist, retired from Rutgers
University in 2017 (but still working, private practice consulting, part-time,
teaching university classes).

Other Things to Share: We were very fortunate to have the

Thomas Clay Christian
John Erich Mattlin Christian

Favorite HKIS Memory: I have many fond memories of track practices
around Repulse Bay, and track meets at various venues around HK. With
no “track” available for team practices, Coach Bob Burns found all kinds of
inventive ways to get us into shape. We ran to the end of South Bay Road
and back. We repeated interval runs around cones on upper South Bay
Close. And we occasionally did laps up and down the steps at the lower
margin of the school building.

In HK, the track season lasted the entire year,
and we traveled to many open meets throughout the colony. My favorite
was an all-relay meet held at the new Boundary Street track, Hong Kong’s
first (and at that time only) all weather track. The meet had no individual
events, but only a series of relays, including both sprint and distance
medleys.

After Graduation: I attended Valparaiso University in Indiana,

thinking I would major in math and education. However, several

outstanding teachers in first year classes led me to focus instead on

humanities courses, and I wound up with a double major in English and the

168

humanities. Upon graduation I returned to HK where I taught 7th grade at
HKIS for two years.

Significant Life Events: When I left HK in 1975, I joined the volunteer
staff at Holden Village, a Lutheran retreat center located in the Cascade
Mountains of Washington State. I was assigned to the kitchen and
eventually spent five of the next seven years at Holden, ultimately running
the kitchen and using all of my time off to hike, climb, and cross country ski
in the Cascades. I also met my future wife, Elizabeth, at Holden.

We married in 1981, and settled the following
year in her home state of Minnesota where she began medical school. I
initially worked part time and also took studio art classes at the University
of Minnesota, eventually adding both a B.F.A. and M.F.A. with an emphasis
on ceramics.

Our oldest son, Thomas, was born in 1989.
Two years later we moved to Port Angeles, Washington where Elizabeth
joined a group of family practice physicians. Our son, John, was born
shortly after.

In Port Angeles, I’ve had a home studio, but
found much of my time and energy devoted to being a stay-at-home dad.
As the boys grew older and more independent, I took on several volunteer
positions and continue along that path today.

Other Things to Share: These days many of us are increasingly
concerned about the state of the natural world – climate change, resource
exhaustion, increasing extinctions, etc. I’m pleased that both of our boys
have found ways to respond to these concerns. Thomas is working for an
environmental consulting firm in Seattle that helps facilitate conversation
and action in varied environmental challenges. John is five years into his
University of Washington graduate work in glaciology, using his physics
background to measure and understand glacier changes.

Bucket List: A dozen years ago I began fly-fishing because

our younger son John wanted to take up the sport. I’m fortunate to live in

an area where I can fish 12 months of the year. Unfortunately, local fish

runs continue to decline. Nevertheless, I treasure time on and around our

rivers, whether or not I manage to connect with a fish. I hope to continue

“standing in a river waving a stick” for a long time.

After Graduation: After HKIS I attended Advanced Business School

in Stockholm, Sweden and then I proudly served in the Swedish Air Force during

the early 70s working in radar surveillance.

Significant Life Events: After serving in the Air Force I spent two years

working in a casino. Next I worked for a Canadian mining company (uranium) in

London and Canada. After that I worked on a large passenger ship in Sweden,

Denmark and Germany. I tried family life in Germany, but that didn’t work out. I

spent plenty of time on the French Riviera and was active on the backgammon

scene. Finally settled down in the south of Sweden, bought a large piece of

property that I have been actively renovating for years. I’m now active on the

stock market and look forward to turning 70 in November.

Note to Classmates: I am retired now
and living in the south of Sweden with my
faithful dog, Thor.

Children: Sage A. Kantor and Jazmin Rochestie

Grandchildren: four – Joss, Cash, Reese and Ryder

After Graduation: After graduating high school and leaving Hong Kong I

attended the University of Miami. I have a Bachelor of Arts with a major in English

and a minor in French.

Significant Life Events: At the University of Miami, I was fortunate enough to
meet my husband, David, in 1971. We ended up staying in Miami and have been
married for 44 years. We have two daughters, Sage, 42, and Jazmin, 40. Wonderful
young women of whom I am so proud. Sage lives five minutes from me in
Aventura, Florida. She and her husband, Brian, are in real estate. They have two
children - Joss, 12, and Cash, 10. Jazmin lives in Philly now - a recent move - and
just moved into a new home. She is presently a stay-at-home mom to two little
boys - Reese, 5, and Ryder, 3, working towards a new career in counseling. Her
husband, Dustin, is a neurologist (the smart one in the family!). Somewhere back
in time I became Susan, but the grandkids call me Susy.

Right out of UM I taught what is now called middle school
for several years until I started working with David. David and I are in commercial
real estate, buying and selling properties around the country. We are self-employed
and have worked together all these years. I also have a side business as a
ghostwriter for 35 years. You can check me out at www.rhymetime.us. In my spare
time I am a gym rat.

Note to Classmates: The time I spent in Hong Kong was very special. These

were my formative years and I was given the opportunity to meet people of diverse

backgrounds. This helped me relate to others as I went through life and to have an

appreciation for the unique. It is also pretty cool that we were all part of the first
years of the first American school in Hong Kong.

HKIS Memories: There are so many things to remember from my fabulous year in

Hong Kong. Perhaps the single thing that stands out most clearly is my volunteer work trying

to teach English to an 11-year old boy whose severe burn injuries prevented him from

appearing in public. He was headed to London for surgeries to modify his scarring and

unhealed sores. I have wondered what ever happened to him. His English name was

“Timmy.”

After Graduation: I attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia,

but decided to take a “leave of absence” in 1971 when I moved to Chicago, where I

completed my bachelor’s degree in Psychology from DePaul University, and a Masters

in Management (Finance and International Business) from Northwestern University,

while working full time. I lived in Chicago for over 40 years (so much for the “leave of

absence”!), working for numerous financial firms and banks, finishing my career with

UBS (United Bank of Switzerland), where I worked for about 25 years (including several

mergers and acquisitions).

Significant Life Events: I am living a dream on my 240-acre farm in Willisburg,
Kentucky, having retired about seven years ago from a career in IT Project
Management in the banking and finance industry, based in Chicago.

I didn’t settle down into a permanent long-term relationship until in my late 30’s, and am
currently married to the love of my life, Marilyn Fox. Marilyn and I retired on the same
day in August, 2012. Marilyn was a medical publisher for a large medical association in
Chicago.

Life has been very good to me. My interests include nature, hiking, swimming, “power
gardening,” music (I studied opera for about 15 years while in Chicago), travel, history,
and lifelong learning. I like nothing more than to share my beautiful farm with family and
close friends, enjoying fresh air, exercise and good food together.

Bucket List: Travels to the World Heritage Historical and Wildlife spots.

Moving to Hong Kong and attending HKIS was a unique experience and
opportunity to meet so many students, and others, from such diverse
backgrounds and cultures. It was foundational to my lifelong passion and
appreciation for, as well as my commitment to, social justice and diversity and
inclusion work. It’s wonderful after so many years to be able to share memories
with so many of us who have this shared experience and I look forward to
reconnecting and renewing friendships.

Favorite HKIS Memories: Lots of fond memories. I remember teaching my
brother (Andy) to play guitar. In about a month he was better than me. After graduating
HKIS music became his life.

My memory is that back in 1968/1969, HKIS was small
enough that you could participate in about anything you wanted to – track, choir, drama.
Those experiences gave me the confidence to do the same in college and beyond.

I attended three high schools - SAS, Morrison Academy
and HKIS. After spending my sophomore year in Taichung, Taiwan; HKIS and Hong
Kong were really exciting. After hearing me talk about HKIS several college friends
commented that I enjoyed high school more than anyone they knew.

After Graduation: Got a B.A. from Samford University and a masters

degree in International Relations from Ohio University. Worked for a

construction/engineering firm in Singapore and Indonesia for many years. Travelled a lot.

In addition to Hong Kong, Singapore and Indonesia, I have lived in Birmingham, Houston,

Denver and San Francisco. Went back to law school in the 80's and have practiced

aviation law since getting my law degree. I may be the only aviation lawyer in Huntsville

who speaks Indonesian.

Significant Life Events: I've had more than my share of blessings. The thing

I'm most proud of is the work my wife has done advocating for minorities and illegal

immigrants. (Not much money in it, but my best chance to get to heaven.)

Bucket List: My grandparents were share-croppers. My parents did

all they could to get off the farm. I have a small farm in south Tennessee and, if I can

ever retire, I intend to work that farm.

Note to Classmates: If any of you know anything about raising chickens, I
need to talk to you.

After Graduation: I returned to Oregon and enrolled in a local

community college. I met my future husband in 1971 and we were married in

1972. We shared much love and many adventures for nearly 45 years.

Significant Life Events: My most significant events revolve around my
husband and our four children. We lived a wonderful, average, adventure of
love, dreams fulfilled and lost, and found joy and sorrow in the living.

Bucket List: I would love to visit Australia!

Favorite HKIS Memory: I have many sweet memories of HKIS activities among others Mix Choir
practices as well as Musettes. Participating in Choir Competition with other High Schools in Hong Kong
is another exciting challenge on its own. My favorite HKIS sport activity was the Square Dance. I’ve also
had a chance to promote Indonesia at HKIS United Nation Assembly through The Candle Dance.

One of the greatest things that happened in my life throughout my high
school years in HKIS was that I could graduate from HKIS through the kindness, care and support of
the Waddle family. Not long after we moved to Hong Kong from San Francisco, my beloved father was
called back to Jakarta Headquarters to run the Indonesian National Airline as the Vice President. My
family stayed in Hong Kong a while longer while my father commuted JKT-HKG until he got a company
house for my family to live in. My brother John and I were left behind in Hong Kong to complete our
High School. My best friend Kathy Waddle must have told her parents of my situation and offered me to
stay with them until I graduated. The whole Waddle family treated me as part of their family and I can’t
thank God enough for placing me in such a wonderful family.

After Graduation: I was accepted at San Diego University College for Women, but was

unable to attend due to financial reasons. The only way was to start working and save up for further

education later.

My first job was with American Express International Banking as a Credit

Clerk where later I was offered to further my career through Job Training in the Credit Department for

six months in Amex Hong Kong. Meanwhile my father got very ill and was sent to Holland for medical

treatment. God called my beloved father Home in April 1970 at the age of 45 years after undergoing an

operation. My brother John was still in school when he heard the sad news. Mr. Christian brought John

home to the family and we then proceeded to the airport to attend my beloved father’s funeral in

Amstelveen, Holland. Before my father passed away though, he had already arranged for my brother

John to further his education in Holland majoring in Civil Engineering.

Significant Life Events: Considering that I’m the eldest child in our family, the income from the
bank was no longer sufficient. God took our father away from my family but He opened so many great
opportunities for us as well. Before I submitted my resignation, I was already offered a job at a mining
company, PT International Nickel as Secretary to the Finance Manager and later promoted as
Executive Secretary to the Managing Director. I was also given the chance to improve my competencies
through management courses after office hours.

181

My attention was drawn to a Pan American Airline advertisement looking
for Flight Hostesses from Indonesia who were to be based in the States, which I thought would be a
great opportunity to support my siblings for further education in the States. When I went for interview,
unfortunately I was rejected because my height was not in proportion with my weight. Six months later
though, Cathay Pacific Airways offered me the same position as Flight Hostess based in Hong Kong. As
I had a strong airline background and it was my passion to work in the Service Industry, my career with
Cathay progressed rapidly from Cabin Crew Flight Hostess ! Senior Flight Hostess !Head Purser !
In-flight Senior Instructress in charge of B-707 Fleet !Chief Purser TriStar L-1011! Cabin Crew
Coordinator in charge of 90 Pursers and finally Chief Purser B-747. I offered my services with Cathay
Pacific for 13 years and took early retirement beginning 1985.

I returned to Indonesia because I was offered to head the Advertisement
& Promotional Department by a Print Media Company, PT Gaya Favorit Press, handling four magazines
i.e.: Ladies Magazine, Teen Age Magazine, Family Magazine and Career Women Magazine. In one of
the Social Events I met my future husband George and married him the same year in 1985. After my
marriage, the Indonesian Government asked me if I could help out with an Expo ’86 Project for
Vancouver. My task was Recruiting and Training Info Aids who were to be representing and promoting
Indonesia in Expo ’86 in Vancouver, Canada foTrexst ix months. I couldn’t go to Vancouver, as I was
pregnant with our first child. Our daughter Geraldine was born the same year 1986. Just as Cathay
Pacific offered me to help them do recruitment throughout Indonesia, I found out I was pregnant again
with our second child. Our son Gregory was born in 1987. I was practically a full time housewife for
almost two years, which made me quite restless, so I was hunting for a job again.

Late 1987 I rejoined American Express Bank - Travel Related Services as
Customer Services Supervisor (starting from beginning again) but progressed further later with more
responsibilities particularly in Operations Department. I stayed with American Express – TRS until 1996
when Amex decided to cut cost by moving and centralizing their South East Asia & Pacific Operations
Departments to Sydney, Australia. The company offered me to be relocated to Sydney, Australia, but
considering my three children are still too young and I couldn’t bring a Nanny, I turned the offer down. At
the same time, thank God for His Grace, a Head Hunter called me to offer me a job as General
Manager at a Cellular Communication Company, PT Mobisel Indonesia, setting up their Customer
Services Operations Department, which I couldn’t resist. All went well with the company until the
monetary crisis in 1998 hit Indonesia badly, causing a sharp drop/devaluation of the Rupiah Currency
followed by liquidation and merging of many banks, collapse of many companies, increased
unemployment, etc.

In year 2000, I joined an Organizational Services Consulting Company
who got the legal license from Franklin Covey to conduct Personal/Interpersonal/
Managerial/Organizational Leadership Training; “Harrison Inner-View” – an assessment tool to put “the
right person in the right place”” (using the Ying Yang concept) including conducting “Fit and Proper
Tests” for Highly Responsible Positions. Knowledge Management Consultancy is also conducted to
help Companies/Corporations to become the “Most Admired Knowledge Enterprise”. The Company was
also very much involved in Community Development Services to help society who are under the poverty
level to improve their economy status through character & competency building, participatory
community engagement research/plans/programs, Community of Practice, “Future Search Programs”
etc. I retired from Dunamis Organization Services in 2006.

Other Things to Share: In 2006 my family established a Tour & Travel Business, PT. Bali
Prestige, where our core business was Handling Onshore Excursions for International Cruise Ship
calling at Indonesian Ports and MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Conference & Exhibition). I’m proud to say
that in 2010 Bali Prestige Tour & Travel was awarded “Top Ten Tour Operators of 2010” by
ResidenSea and The World. However, due to the rapid growth of “on-line business” the business was
no longer sustainable and our family decided to sell the business in 2018.

One of the “Best Practices” I wish I could implement is for high schools in
Indonesia to have a “Career Day” for their students before they graduate. The High School would invite
different Experts or Professionals to give short speeches on what is required to be in the prestigious
position where the presenter works, so the students may decide which direction they should take at
University in order to be an expert in the profession about which they are passionate. Although I did not
have the opportunity to use the Media Print Channel or the Organizational Services Business Channel,
I’m happy and proud to say that my daughter, Geraldine, who is a Chemistry Teacher in Penabur
International High School has already implemented it.

Bucket List: My dream for Indonesia is for “Indonesia to Become a Knowledge Based

Country” in the near future.

Not yet, but I remain quietly hopeful! ☺

HKIS Memories: Having attended Maryknoll Sisters School for the first two

years we lived in HK, I was thrilled when HKIS opened in 1967! Some of my favorite

memories were helping to set up the library, working on the Orientale yearbook,

Sadie Hawkins’ Day, Prom and volleyball.

After Graduation: Much to my dismay, my father was transferred back to the

U.S. after my junior year at HKIS. So I actually graduated from high school in New

Jersey, but as the song goes … I left my heart and friends in Hong Kong! Hong Kong

was genuinely a life-changing experience for me, instilling a true sense of diversity

and inclusion with friends from all over the world. Among the first HKIS students, we

were Crusader pioneers in every sense of the word and my perspectives and

horizons were broadened beyond my wildest curiosity and imagination. Returning to

the U.S. by comparison was pretty bland after being on the orient express. I sincerely

value the education, those experiences and friendships to this day!

Significant Life Events: I thought I wanted to be a Home Economics teacher and
went to Virginia Tech, but was not happy and left college much to my parents’
chagrin. While figuring out what I wanted to do with my life, I returned to my summer
job at IBM in NYC in the secretarial pool. I loved working in international human
resources for the next 15 years. Two of my favorite assignments were helping people

183

relocate to overseas assignments and teaching leadership and management
development at the IBM Executive Education Center.

I met my husband at Mardi Gras in New Orleans and we married in 1984. Our son
was born a year later and our daughter in 1989. Sadly, our infant daughter died two
days after birth from delivery complications. I was fortunate to be an at-home mom,
but after working for so many years, decided to return to my home ec roots, started
my own catering business and taught culinary classes. Wilton Industries asked me to
develop a consumer education program for marketing their culinary product line.
That was a “sweet” job for the next decade, but when my husband became ill at age
49, I became the breadwinner and had to get serious about supporting our family
while he battled Early Alzheimer’s for 12 years.

My husband’s job with AT&T took us to New Orleans, Birmingham, Nashville and
Atlanta. We moved to Texas in order to be closer to family following his illness. I went
to work for an entrepreneur in Paris, TX initially to establish a human resources
department. Over the next decade I moved from HR VP to COO to President of his
five companies…commercial construction, supply chain logistics, industrial storage,
steel fabrication and real estate development (just a small leap from home
economics). After re-engineering and transitioning these companies to the owner’s
sons, I started my own consulting business in 2008. Committed to lifelong learning
and having taken college courses throughout my career, I finally graduated from
Harvard Business School in 2007.

When my mother passed away in 2010 and we sold their farm, my father moved in
with me and I retired. My son graduated from SMU in Dallas with a triple major in
Computer Science Engineering, Math and Physics. He is married and lives in San
Francisco working in the social gaming industry. In my spare time I enjoy volunteer
activities in the community, gardening, cooking, needlework, reading and family
genealogy research.

Bucket List: Travel …I’ve not been back to Hong Kong

since the early 80s. A return visit to the Far East is high on my

wish list…along with living life to the fullest and giving back

wherever I can, having a positive impact on others, and a

legacy of having made a difference. My welcome mat is out

and your invitation to come and visit is genuine. We even

have an Eiffel Tower topped with a red Stetson in Paris, Texas

y’all!

My hope for all of us at this exceptional reunion is to continue
to be in touch. Let’s not wait another 50 years to re-connect.
My sincerest thanks to everyone who helped make our golden
reunion possible.
