RIPN Shekhar Mehta, Chair Rotary India Literacy Mission,
in conversation with TEACH Group Head, Sandip Agarwalla

“For me Rotary India Literacy Mission is just not a project or a program, it is
a mission for every Rotarian, every Indian. We cannot have the scourge of
being an illiterate country. We cannot have the stigma of 1/4th of our
population being illiterate. Our country is progressing so well, we are on the
Moon, we are on Mars but we are still illiterate? We can turn this around, it is
possible. With the Rotary India Literacy Mission, we have hit the bull’s eye.
The hard work we have put in, research that we have done, the think tank
meetings that we have had, have led us to a situation where the
government is seeking our partnership, corporates are inviting us.
Tata Technology recently invited us to become their
advisor. Every fortnight we get one call or the other,
one government organization, or one state government - “please come we want to do this work
with you”. This means we are on the right program! If we put in all our energy and our focus in the
next 6 years, we can turn things around and make India a totally literate country.”

SMART DENTAL PROJECT

A mega dental project was conceived to be executed during the Smart Year to cover over 25,000 school
students around the District 3141.

The 1st phase of this project was kicked off with the Rotary Clubs of Zone 3: Bombay West, Mumbai North
End, Mumbai Mid West, JVPD Mumbai, Mumbai Divas, Mumbai Westend.

Podar Schools (Hindi & Marathi medium) were finalised - as most of
the children are under privileged - to conduct the check-up and

identify the students needing treatment, followed by
counselling & consent from parents to arrange their
visit for treatment to MGM hospital in Panvel.

On 18th July the check-up camp was
inaugurated by DG Harjit Singh, District
officers, Club Presidents and Rotaract
volunteers who assisted throughout the day.
Check-up was done for approx. 1600
children. They were given a talk and demo
on brushing techniques using models. A
team of 18 doctors from MGM Hospital &
Dental College with the help of 20 Rotractors,
Rotarians, R/Anns & Teachers of School
made sure the checkup went off smoothly.

Around 134 Students were shortlisted for
treatment and consent received from the
parents. Visits to MGM hospital
accompanied by 2 teachers and 2 parents
were planned in a phased manner and the
final trip is scheduled for the last week of
August, which will bring the first school to a
successful completion.

Q & A on

SKIN DONATION

Jhankar Gadkari

Group Head, District Thrust Areas
District Training Facilitator

Courtesy interview of Dr. Sabhapathy

What is skin donation and why do we need it?
In a human body, there are various tissues and organs that can be
donated either post brain death or natural death. While all the organs
and skin can be donated after brain death, only eyes and skin can be
donated after natural death.
When it is badly burnt or damaged, it is unable to repair itself and in
such cases, skin transplant is preferred, as a way to promote healing.
Who can donate skin?
Anyone above the age of 18 years can donate skin. Also, every person
who donates eyes can donate skin. Individuals having diabetes or
hypertension can also donate their skin.
Is there any donor recipient match required?
Deceased person should not be suffering from any diseases like AIDS,
HIV, Hepatitis B and C, Tuberculosis, Jaundice, Sexually Transmitted
Diseases, skin cancer, active skin disease and septicemia. before
harvesting the skin, a blood sample is taken for necessary tests.
In skin transplant, there is no blood or tissue matching between donor and recipient required.
Which parts of the body skin is harvested?
Skin is taken only from hidden parts that are thighs, legs and back. Taking out skin does not cause any
bleeding or disfigurement. After harvesting the skin, the areas are covered with bandages.
What is the process of skin donation?
Skin is harvested within 6 hours of death. Once the family calls, we check the cause of death and our
retrieval team reaches the place of death as soon as possible.

Steps

Step 1: Scrubbing, shaving, and cleaning of the body is done.

Step 2: Using a special instrument called dermatome, the skin is harvested. Only 0.3mm thickness
of the skin is harvested.

Step 3: Once the skin is harvested, the area is covered properly with bandages.

Step 4: Harvested skin is preserved in 50 percent glycerol solution along with antibiotics in a
sterile container. The entire procedure takes only 45 minutes. The harvested skin is then taken to
skin bank.
