The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.
These are the words of Dorothea Lange, an American photographer who took pictures of migrants in the Unit- ed States of America during the Great Depression in the 1930s.
She is right, in my opinion. Photography becomes a tool for people to tell their stories or describe a situation they are in. The camera, and now at our present era the smart- phone, becomes our friend in relaying these messages to the people, whether friends or strangers.
This photobook, which is part of the HAOYEAH project, is a collection of photographs taken by Southeast Asians and Taiwanese using their smartphones. The pictures evoke a wide array of emotions and messages. They present the richness in diversity of Taiwan, how many peoples of var- ied cultures come together and look at things in the same light, with the same eyes.
There are pictures here that will make you smile, pictures that will sadden or anger you, pictures that will make you think of home or be one with nature, pictures that will make you laugh.
Albeit different, our Taiwanese and Southeast Asian brothers and sisters seem to see things in the same way. And it warms the heart.
I am very happy to have many of them come to the work- shops and be able to learn about photography together. Their diversity should not pose as a hindrance but a spe- cial ingredient to enriching their lives and their respective cultures. Two heads are better than one, they say. In this case, many eyes see better than just one pair.
Special thanks goes out to Migrante Taiwan, Bugkos-Tai- wan, AsosiasiTenagaKerja Indonesia, Tanzi and Taichung Catholic Church – Ugnayan Ministry, True Light Gospel Church, TransAsia Sisters Association Taiwan, Taiwan As- sociation for Human Rights, Serve the People Association, SEAMi and countless organizations who made not only this photobook but the HAOYEAH project a success.
You make Taiwan a very happy place. You welcome peo- ple to your fold, making them feel at home. And that feel- ing, oftentimes, no photograph can capture.
