53 KNOWLEDGE The History of Rotary Pins: A Symbol of Service and Pride I n 1906, a Chicago Rotarian created the first Rotary symbol, a wagon wheel representing "Civilization and Movement," with its design refined over time to remove a cloud of dust, remaining the emblem until 1912. The emblem today In 1910, the Rotary Club of Philadelphia innovatively added cogs to their emblematic wheel, symbolizing members' collaborative efforts and solidarity, with 19 cogs representing their club's ordinal position. Successfully pitching this design as the new official international wheel in 1912 was aided by the Philadelphia club's president, who had designed their emblem and subsequently became president of the International Association of Rotary Clubs. In 1918, two Rotarian engineers advocated for a redesign of the Rotary wheel due to engineering flaws and irregularities in the existing emblem. They proposed a new design with six spokes representing the six Objects of Rotary and 24 cogs, which was introduced to the Rotary world in 1920. Despite this, various versions of the Rotary wheel persisted until 1922 when Rotary International Association mandated the adoption of a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians • 19/04/24 Source: https://www.rotary.org/en/history-how-rotary-emblem-evolved
