The success of the first run of Ang Huling El Bimbo took us by surprise. From the time we started conceptualizing the musical––a painstaking process which took more than four years––we felt that it would generate a lot of interest, especially from the generation of Pinoys who grew up listening to the Eraserheads during the heydays of Original Pilipino Music in the ‘90s. But still, there were doubts at the back of our minds, and we knew we were taking a big risk with the kind of story we were about to tell. When people filled the Newport Performing Arts Theater on the show’s first few nights, and responded with standing ovations––a rare sight among traditionally reserved Filipino theater goers––that was the time we started thinking, “May laban ito. We just might have a hit on our hands.” And when the cast was met with overwhelmingly positive reactions show after show after show, that was the time we could finally believe it. I have no doubt that nostalgia played a big part in driving audiences to the show, which is a testament to the power and timeless appeal of the songs created by Ely, Raymund, Marcus, and Buddy. But judging from the heartwarming comments of the thousands of people who saw Ang Huling El Bimbo, what left the most indelible marks were the story, the unexpected ways the familiar songs were used, the direction, the production value, and of course, the incredible performance of the cast members. Now, the same team is back for a second run, joined by new cast members who have wowed audiences with their respective performances in previous productions. With additional enhancements to the story, the music, and the staging, we hope it will be an even more memorable and powerful experience than the first one. Ang Huling El Bimbo is a work of art and a labor of love. I hope that you will enjoy the experience and share it with others. Kingson Sian President & Chief Executive Officer Newport World Resorts
Ana Chua Senior Vice President FHTC and Entertainment Newport World Resorts Full House Theatre Company (FHTC) is by no means the first ever to produce original Pilipino theater productions. In fact, Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) has been at it for well over 40 years, and so has Tanghalang Pilipino, to name but two theater companies that do original Pilipino material. But the scale of FHTC’s productions is unprecedented in local theater. And when we say scale, we are talking about the army of production people in the back, the technical staff, the front of house and stage managements, the set builders, the artistic and the creative teams, not to mention the cast itself. Of course producing shows is not without its risks, and these risks increase exponentially at these levels as well. But it has all paid off. The audience response to Ang Huling El Bimbo was very positive, to say the least. We had full houses in all shows from tech week, clear through, to the closing performance. And people were still inquiring for tickets days after the last performance. All this confirms the keen interest there was in this show. There were two other original Pilipino productions running to full houses concurrently with Ang Huling El Bimbo, which demonstrates how the theater industry has crossed a rubicon of sorts. Productions like Ang Huling El Bimbo allow the general Filipino audiences to recognize theater as a viable option for their entertainment. Our show has found its audience, and the audiences have found us. It’s a mutual discovery you might say, and we hope this relationship will grow. And so it is with a firm commitment to provide our audiences with a quality production that we re-mount our production of Ang Huling El Bimbo. This iteration of the musical features a fine-tuned narrative that is truly gripping, and which allows the actors further opportunity to create deeper interpretations of the characters. As in the first run, this production is guided by the clear vision and amazing choreography of our Director Dexter Santos, ably assisted by Associate Director Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, and of course, supported by the brilliant arrangements of our Musical Director Myke Salomon. We are very happy to see you in our theater and we are looking forward to performing this masterpiece for you. We thank you for your support and for being on this incredible journey with us!
4 Michael Stuart Williams Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo Artistic Director Artistic Director After two years of the COVID uncertainty that impacted live performances in the country, Full House Theater Company is happy to be back in full force to continue our commitment to developing original productions for our audiences. It seems so long ago when we started the journey that was Ang Huling El Bimbo. None of us realized how strongly it would resonate with Filipino audiences. The show opened to rave reviews in 2018, followed shortly by another staging in 2019 which was equally well-received. In this third iteration of Ang Huling El Bimbo, our audiences can expect significant but subtle changes in the music, a more streamlined book, an updated choreography, and a vibrant new cast. Our dedicated cast, crew, creative, and production teams have worked tirelessly with our brilliant musical arranger Myke Salomon, guided by the clear vision of our director Dexter Santos, to bring you the 2023 revival of this epic musical. We thank you all for the years of support you have given Ang Huling El Bimbo. We look forward to seeing you in the Theater!
5 A JOURNEY Through their timeless songs, the Eraserheads gifted a whole generation of kids with a collection of love letters. These love letters put into words the heartaches, failures, dreams, and aspirations of these kids who were in the process of making their way in this world. Indeed, there is an Eheads song for every moment, every milestone of our lives. Mounting an original Pilipino musical on the big Newport Performing Arts Theater stage with songs as iconic as Eheads songs was definitely no walk in the park. It entailed countless meetings, revisions, consultations, trials and errors not to mention the long, arduous hours of rehearsals, scene work, and company calls. But with the dedication of everyone in the production and the support of our audiences, Ang Huling El Bimbo’s first run last year performed in front of full houses for 33 shows. It was truly a blessing. And having the chance to mount it again to see its full potential come to life is nothing short of a miracle. This year’s production of Ang Huling El Bimbo features a reworked book that follows the original plot of the 2018 run. The new libretto retains the much loved hits and the energetic staging, while delving deeper into the characters of the main protagonists. Much of the earlier book’s grit has also been retained and expanded. This 2019 version will feature the Eraserheads songs we will never forget, all packed in a musical for our times. Our audiences are up for a treat in the form of new cast members, choreography, and musical arrangement. This early in the production (we are still rehearsing as of this writing), I am already immensely grateful to everybody in the production for putting in double the love, dedication, and effort in this run. The process leading to our opening night is all sorts of explorations of perspectives and possibilities. I am thankful to have a team that is open and patient. Thank you to our collaborators—artistic team, actors, management and staff. The journey of AHEB will always be about an original work that is alive and evolving. Join us and let the legacy of the most iconic ‘90s OPM band and the power of the theater not only entertain but, more importantly, ask questions and disturb. Gusto mo bang sumama? Dexter M. Santos Director & Choreographer
6 The Eraserheads captured the imagination of a whole generation of music fans, and their music continues to capture the hearts of all those who hear their songs. For some reason, their songs seemed to perfectly fit events in our lives—providing a sort of soundtrack that we fondly remember many years later. This is why their songs continue to be in demand for use as movie and TV theme songs, as well as for some of the most memorable TV advertisements ever created. For the first time, however, these songs were used in a grand musical production, and we are extremely happy to be working with Resorts World Manila, Full House Theater Company, and Ultimate Shows, Inc. for this project. Bringing these songs to life in a musical is not an easy task, but we are confident that the production team did an excellent job in weaving the songs into the story. We hope that the success of Ang Huling El Bimbo will pave the way for more musical productions using Filipino songs because, after all, nothing compares to Filipino music. Merwin Tee Music Publisher
A crowd gathers in the middle of a busy street, the mundane rhythm of their daily lives interrupted by a moment that briefly snaps them out of their routines. But they are quick to move on, eager to continue their survival song. This is contemporary Manila. A phone call disrupts the lives of three men, summoning them to the precinct. The call could not have come at a worse time, as Hector, Emman, and Anthony are succumbing to pressures in their respective lives. At the precinct, they see each other––an unexpected and awkward reunion after more than twenty years, as they wait for Arturo Banlaoi to arrive. Flash back to the ‘90s, as the three men remember how their paths first crossed in college: meeting at the dorm, going through the ups and downs of student life, facing challenges that are somehow made easier with each other’s company. Memories are vividly recalled––fun times at the university, their antics during military training, stories of their romantic escapades, and hanging out at their favorite diner, Toyang’s. This is where they met Joy, a fellow student and the niece of Tiya Dely, who owns the diner. Bonds are formed, friendships solidified, and dreams shared. Being at the precinct also stirs up unwelcome memories amongst three––memories of one fateful night weeks before their graduation that changed their lives forever. Arturo Banlaoi arrives, bearing bad news. The three men get into a heated argument about what to do next, triggering a long-overdue confrontation about the incident from twenty years ago, and what they could have and should not have done. They are uninterrupted only by the arrival of the people Joy left behind: Tiya Dely, and Joy’s orphaned daughter Ligaya. This story unfolds in two timelines, with a series of flashbacks and scenes from the present interwoven to tell the tale of a friendship shattered into a thousand pieces. But life continues as Hector, Emman, and Anthony have to find a way to pick up the pieces, and make the choice to mend their broken lives. SYNOPSIS 7
