Direction and Choreography by Dexter M. Santos Book by Dingdong Novenario With Additional Scenes and Dialogue by Floy Quintos Musical Arrangement by Myke Salomon Produced by Full House Theater Company and Newport World Resorts

Dexter M. Santos Director & Choreographer How does one revitalize Ang Huling El Bimbo The Musical five years after its world premiere? Coming from the theatre lockdown because of the pandemic, I have my own share of anxiety and fears. I knew from the start how massive AHEB was so when Newport World Resorts and Full House Theater Company decided to re-open its theatre season with AHEB, I admit that I was afraid. How do you restage the dynamic blocking, complicated characterization, difficult singing, intricate choreography, huge sets, numerous revolve and car cues with a cast who is 80 percent new? Many of the artists would agree, sometimes it is much easier to create something new rather than trying to remember what has been done before. It is a challenge climbing up those steep stairs going to the NPAT Rehearsal Hall. As I catch my breath and sign the attendance sheet, I could experience an atmosphere I have been longing for since the pandemic. As soon as you open the door, the wild ride of mounting/re-mounting an original work unfolds. The ensemble reviewing their choreography… the leads on an early call are in another room participating in a workshop led by Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo… Myke Salomon reviewing music and making sure harmonies are on point. Fritz Esase intently reviewing and notating performance videos from different angles… Stephen Viñas checking their choreographic journal for new combinations and patterns… Michael Williams intently talking to and preparing our child actors… Christian Parado and his team preparing the substitute props and set pieces that would reach the hallway outside the rehearsal studio and even the lower floor. And as the actual rehearsal commences, the tedious process begins. A process that involves overwhelming direction, direct to the point and no sugarcoating notes, complicated dance combinations and harmonies, confusing stage and backstage traffic and a wide gamut of emotions. The eyes of the theatre neophytes in the cast are in blank stare, the seasoned ones saturating every possibility and Sheila Francisco making sure that every rehearsal moment is on the edge. Not marking any acting choice or song… not holding back even the slightest bit. And this is what the theatre stands for… a commitment to the hard and difficult work… a commitment to artistry… a commitment to an uncompromising standard… that if one fails or commits mistakes… we sleep it over and come back energized and ready to fight. And of course, a commitment to our audience. The AHEB audience who have supported us in our 2018 and 2019 runs and even in our 2020 online streaming. As I write this, we just had our second run-through and we are weeks away from the opening. I do not know what’s gonna happen as we approach the mad dash of tech rehearsals and the euphoric chaos to opening night. But there’s one thing that I know—that my heart… our hearts are full. AHEB is an unselfish product of artists, producers, musicians, managers, technicians, and NWR employees who, through all these years, gave their all in making sure that the El Bimbo love that we share on stage transcends to our audiences. Marami pong salamat sa pagkakataong makasama kayong muli sa paglarga pa-alapaap!

After two years of the COVID uncertainty that impacted live performances in the country, Full House Theater Company is happy to be back in full force to continue our commitment to developing original productions for our audiences. It seems so long ago when we started the journey that was Ang Huling El Bimbo. None of us realized how strongly it would resonate with Filipino audiences. The show opened to rave reviews in 2018, followed shortly by another staging in 2019 which was equally well-received. In this third iteration of Ang Huling El Bimbo, our audiences can expect significant but subtle changes in the music, a more streamlined book, an updated choreography, and a vibrant new cast. Our dedicated cast, crew, creative, and production teams have worked tirelessly with our brilliant musical arranger Myke Salomon, guided by the clear vision of our director Dexter Santos, to bring you the 2023 revival of this epic musical. We thank you all for the years of support you have given Ang Huling El Bimbo. We look forward to seeing you in the Theater! Michael Stuart Williams Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo Artistic Directors

President & Chief Executive Officer Newport World Resorts Kingson Sian 4 Music that evokes nostalgia over the good old days, a story that touches the heart, performances and staging that leave an indelible mark in the memories of those who experience it. These are some of the elements that made Ang Huling El Bimbo a phenomenal success that far exceeded our expectations. With show after sold-out show, one standing ovation after another, from its first run in 2018 to its second in 2019, the overwhelming reactions of the audience proved that there is a hunger among Filipinos for our own stories, told through an artform that our world-class artists have mastered. This hunger became even sharper at a time when theaters were shut down and public gatherings were prohibited. In 2020, when the world was thrown into chaos by a global pandemic and we were searching for every small way to help ease the burden of fear, uncertainty, and isolation, this musical became our gift to Filipinos around the world. Reaching a wider audience than we ever could from inside the theater, the online streaming of Ang Huling El Bimbo connected over 7 million viewers in a span of just 48 hours—people stuck in their own homes laughing over the same punchlines, crying over the same scenes, feeling the joy and pain of the same characters, singing along to the same familiar songs reimagined in surprising ways. We couldn’t see if there were any standing ovations this time around, but we felt the same love from the viewers through their heartwarming comments and reactions. As we have seen time and again in the theater, audiences were drawn by the timeless music of Ely, Raymund, Marcus, and Buddy, but they fell in love with the story of Joy, Hector, Emman, and Anthony. It is only fitting that we bring back this show as our first live musical offering at the Newport Peforming Arts Theater since the return of live shows, in response to the clamor from people who want to experience it—whether or not for the first time—the way it was meant to be experienced. This time around, we have new talents joining some familiar faces in the cast, bringing a new energy to this well-loved production. Welcome back to the theater, and welcome back to Ang Huling El Bimbo.

Ana Chua Senior Vice President Corporate Sponsorship and Entertainment 5 The past three years have been a long and unexpected intermission for the theater community, and we’ve been eagerly waiting for the day when the stage lights come on and the curtains go up once again. That day has come, and it seems like light years away from the time we first heard the term “community quarantine.” Our mission at Newport World Resorts and Full House Theater Company is to promote our own, homegrown performing arts, and it seems only fitting that we mark our return to live theater shows with a new staging of our very first original Pilipino musical, Ang Huling El Bimbo. After all, it not only touched the hearts of thousands during its 2018 and 2019 runs—it also became part of the memories of more than 7 million people who saw it online during a time of uncertainty. As the cast sings in one scene, “you’ll get along with a little prayer and a song.” And now here we are, ready for another run, whether behind the scenes, onstage, or in the audience, all united by our collective longing for the magic of theater. We are excited to have more people experience—and reexperience—this story of friendship and how it changes, with time or with unwelcome twists of fate, and how it unfolds through the songs that we all know and love. There are new things to look forward to this time around—not the least of which are some new performers who will help bring this story to life, together with our amazing creative team. Thank you for taking the time to see, hear, and feel the Ang Huling El Bimbo love with us. And we look forward to your support in our future ventures in showcasing world-class Filipino talent.

6 The Eraserheads captured the imagination of a whole generation of music fans, and their music continues to capture the hearts of all those who hear their songs. For some reason, their songs seemed to perfectly fit events in our lives—providing a sort of soundtrack that we fondly remember many years later. This is why their songs continue to be in demand for use as movie and TV theme songs, as well as for some of the most memorable TV advertisements ever created. For the first time, however, these songs were used in a grand musical production, and we are extremely happy to be working with Newport World Resorts and Full House Theater Company. for this project. Bringing these songs to life in a musical is not an easy task, but the production team did an excellent job in weaving the songs into the story. We hope that the success of Ang Huling El Bimbo will pave the way for more musical productions using Filipino songs because, after all, nothing compares to Filipino music. A crowd gathers in the middle of a busy street, the mundane rhythm of their daily lives interrupted by a moment that briefly snaps them out of their routines. But they are quick to move on, eager to continue their survival song. This is contemporary Manila. A phone call disrupts the lives of three men, summoning them to the precinct. The call could not have come at a worse time, as Hector, Emman, and Anthony are succumbing to pressures in their respective lives. At the precinct, they see each other––an unexpected and awkward reunion after more than twenty years, as they wait for Arturo Banlaoi to arrive. Flash back to the ‘90s, as the three men remember how their paths first crossed in college: meeting at the dorm, going through the ups and downs of student life, facing challenges that are somehow made easier with each other’s company. Memories are vividly recalled––fun times at the university, their antics during military training, stories of their romantic escapades, and hanging out at their favorite diner, Toyang’s. This is where they met Joy, the niece of Tiya Dely, who owns the diner. Bonds are formed, friendships solidified, and dreams shared. Being at the precinct also stirs up unwelcome memories amongst the three––memories of one fateful night before their graduation that changed their lives forever. Arturo Banlaoi arrives, bearing bad news. The three men get into a heated argument about what to do next, triggering a long-overdue confrontation about the incident from twenty years ago, and what they could have and should not have done. They are uninterrupted only by the arrival of the people Joy left behind: Tiya Dely, and Joy’s orphaned daughter Ligaya. This story unfolds in two timelines, with a series of flashbacks and scenes from the present interwoven to tell the tale of a friendship shattered into a thousand pieces. But life continues as Hector, Emman, and Anthony have to find a way to pick up the pieces, and make the choice to mend their broken lives. SYNOPSIS 7
