4 Good Reasons for Bad feelings : Insights from the frontier of Evolutionary Psychiatry . Globally, the burden of depression and other mental – health conditions is on the rise. In North America and Europe alone, mental illness accounts for upto 40% of all years lost to disability. And molecular medicine, which has been huge success in treating diseases such as cancer, has failed to stem the tide. Into that alarming context enters the thought provoking GOOD REASONS for BAD FEELINGS, in which evolutionary psychiatrist Randolph never offers insights that radically reframe psychiatric conditions. In his view, the roots of mental illnesses, such as anxiety and depression, lie in essential functions that evolved as building blocks of adaptive behavioural and cognitive function. Furthermore, like the legs of thorough bred racehorsesselected for length, but tending towards weakness – some dysfunctional aspects of mental function might have originated with selection for unrelated traits, such as cognitive capacity. Intrinsic vulnerabilities in the human mind would be a trade off for optimizing unrelated features. Similar ideas have surfaced before in different contexts. Evolutionary biologists Stephen Joy Gould and Richard Lewontin, for example, critically examined the blind faith of ‘adaptationist’ evolutionary theorizing. Their classic paper ‘The spandrels of San Marco and the Panglossian paradigm’ challenged the idea that every aspect of an organism has been perfected by natural selection. Instead, like the curved triangles of masonry between arches supporting domes in medieval and Renaissance architecture, some parts are contingent structural by products. These might have no discernible adaptive advantage, or might even be maladaptive gould and lewontin’s intuition has to some extent, been vindicated by molecular genetics. Certain versions of the primitive immune – system protein complement 4A, for instance, evolved for reasons unrelated to mental function, and yet are associated with an increased risk of schizophrenia. 8 Yakshagana is a traditional theatre from that combines dance, music, dialogue, costume, meakup and stage techniques with a unique style and form. This theatre style is mainly found in Tulunaadu and some parts of Malenadu regions of Karnata and Kerala. Yakshanagana is traditionally presented from dusk to dawn. It’s stories are drawn from Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavata and other Hindu epics. Yakshagana literally means the song (gana) of the Yaksha (nature spirits). Yakshagana is the scholastic name for art forms formerly known as bayalata and dasavatara. It is belived to have evolved from pre classical music and theater during the period of Bhakti movement. It is sometimes simply called “The Play” in Tulu language. Yakshagana is a Separate genre of music independent of Karnakata Sangeehta and the Hindustani music of India. It is believed to have survived as an indigenous phenomenon only in Karnataka. A typical Yakshagana performance consists of background music played by a group of musicians, and a dance and dialogue group, who together enact poetic epics on stage. The himmela is made up of lead singer-who also directs the production and is referred to as the “First Actor”. Additional himmela members are players of traditional (himmela members are players) musical instruments. Such as the maddale, the harmonium and the chande (loud drums). The music is based on ragas, which are characterized by rhythmic patterns called mattu and tala. Yakashagana performance typically beings in the twilight hours, with an initial beathing of the drums of several fixed compositions, called abbara. This may last for up to an hour before the actors finally arrive on the stage. The actors wear resplendent costumes, head – dresses, and face paints. Yakashagana is popular in the districts of Dakshina Kannada, Kasaragod, Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Shimoga. Yakshagana can refer to a style of writing, as well as the written material itself. It was probably used for poems enacted in bayalata such as the “ballads of Koti and Chennayya”. Yakshagana in its present form is believed to have been strongly influenced by the Vaishanava Bhakti movement. Yakshagana was first introduced in Udupi by Madhvacharya’s disciple Narahari Tirtha. Narahari Tirtha was the minister in the Kalinga Kingdom, He also was the founder of Kuchipudi. The first written evidence regarding Yakashangana is found on an inscription at the Lakshminarayana Temple in Kurugodu, Somasamudra, Bellary District. The Yakshagana form of today is the result of a slow evolution, drawing its elements from ritual theatre, temple arts, and secular arts all interwoven over a period of several hundred years.
