58 | 2026-2027 TOUR BOOKWinterfestBUCKEYE LAKE REGION CHAMBER OF COMMERCEThe Story Behind Buckeye Lake’s Winterfest It all started with an idea sparked by a frigid Ohio winter. During a Buckeye Lake Region Chamber of Commerce board meeting, Trustee Mike Fornataro proposed an event to liven up the lake’s off-season. Inspired by Punxsutawney’s Groundhog Day, he wondered: Why not create something just as special for Buckeye Lake? The idea quickly evolved. Instead of a groundhog, the lake needed a fitting mascot—something aquatic. Names were tossed around. Carl the Carp? Too common. Charlie the Catfish? Still a bottom-feeder. Then came the winner: Benny the Bass. With excitement building, the Chamber launched Buckeye Lake Winterfest, setting it for the last Saturday in January with a sunrise kickoff.Benny’s Big MomentWinterfest has grown into a can’tmiss event, drawing crowds from across Ohio. As the sun rises, music fills the air, and anticipation builds for Benny the Bass’ winter forecast. At 7 a.m., minnows drop into Benny’s tank. If he eats within three minutes—early spring! If not, bundle up—winter lingers. A dazzling fireworks show follows, marking the official start of Winterfest weekend!A Celebration from Sunrise to SunsetWinterfest doesn’t end with Benny’s big moment—it’s an all-day, all-weekend party. Each year, the Chamber releases limited-edition tumblers featuring Benny and a map of participating businesses. Live music, food and drink specials, art shows, and more keep the energy going well past sunset. And if you’re lucky, you might spot the Benny the Bass mascot making the rounds!A Tradition Worth Freezing ForThanks to the Buckeye Lake Region Chamber of Commerce, Winterfest has become a beloved tradition, proving that even in winter, Buckeye Lake is full of life.So bundle up, mark your calendar, and get ready—because at Buckeye Lake, Benny the Bass always knows best!
