ABOUT INSTITUT KIMIA MALAYSIA (IKM) Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM), or the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry, is a statutory professional organization incorporated under the Chemists Act 1975 on 1st November 1977 and is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI). The Institute was earlier inaugurated on 8th April 1967 with 27 founding members and subsequently registered under the Societies Act 1966 on 13th October 1967. IKM has grown in tandem with the rapid development of Malaysia to become a wellestablished and strong professional organization recognized both locally and internationally. Membership of IKM comes from both the manufacturing and service sectors, universities and other institutions of higher learning, research and development institutions, and government and education sectors. With membership of more than 5,300 in August 2022, IKM enjoys a prominent place among the professional scientific organization in Malaysia. The Institute is also playing a leading role in the development of chemistry in Malaysia. PRESIDENT MESSAGE On behalf of Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM), I would like to congratulate IKM Perak Branch for organizing KARNIVAL KIMIA MALAYSIA (K2M) KE-4 NEGERI PERAK 2023 on 18th November 2023 at SMK Menglembu, Ipoh, Perak. IKM is a professional scientific organization that regulates the practice of chemistry in Malaysia. We also promote the advancement of chemical sciences. In addition, we also popularize chemistry to the younger generation, especially primary and secondary students. We have organized many chemistry popularization programmes and activities including Kuiz Kimia Kebangsaan Malaysia (K3M), Karnival Kimia Malaysia (K2M) and Karnival Kemahiran dan Kerjaya Kimia Malaysia (K4M). Kuiz Kimia, or K3M, is very popular among Malaysian secondary students and this year, we have 38,470 students taking part. We also organize many Karnival Kimia, or K2M, in different places in Malaysia. In fact, we just completed K2M Negeri Sabah on 28 October 2023 at Maktab Sabah, Kota Kinabalu.The main purpose of K2M is to popularize and arouse the students’ interest in chemistry so that they will take up chemistry in their higher education and at university. In fact, the theme of K2M Perak 2023, “Kelestarian Kimia dalam kehidupan”, is most appropriate and relevant to our objective in popularizing chemistry. I would like to record our sincere appreciation to IKM Perak Branch Committee for their effort in organizing K2M Perak Ke-4. I would also like thank Jabatan Pendidikan Perak and SMK Menglembu for their support and cooperation in making this K2M Perak a success. CHAIRPERSON MESSAGE On behalf of Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM) Cawangan Perak, I would like to extend my warm welcome to the ‘Karnival Kimia Malaysia (K2M) Kali-4 2023 Negeri Perak”. Aligned with the Mission of Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (IKM) to promote public awareness, appreciation, and advancement of chemistry towards sustainable socio-economic development of the nation and The Sustainable Development Goal, SDG4 in providing quality education, IKM Perak Branch is organizing the 4th Malaysian Chemistry Carnival 2023 with the Theme of ‘Sustainability of Chemistry in Life’ (Kelestarian Kimia dalam Kehidupan). The main objective of the 4th K2M Perak 2023 is to promote the public's understanding and appreciation of chemistry in life. It also aims to inspire teachers and provide them with innovative teaching strategies. Besides, through the involvement of students in this event, we hope that this platform can stimulate students’ interest in Chemistry as a potential career path. To achieve all these objectives, we have arranged a series of activities in the 4th K2M Perak 2023 which will involve the participation of students and teachers. The activities in this event including the Innovation Competition and Science Talent Shows which involve primary and secondary school students. This event also provides a platform for primary and secondary school teachers to show their talent in the 3 minutes PdPc Poster Pitching Competition. In addition, a hands-on workshop is provided for Chemistry and Science teachers to learn the knowledge and have the hands-on experience in Microscale Teaching in Chemistry. Through this workshop, we hope that teachers can share this knowledge with their colleagues and eventually benefit the students. This is the 4th K2M in Perak and I am pleased to see the commitment shown by the organizing committee. The objectives of the 4th K2M 2023 Perak will not achieve without the cooperation of all the organizing committee members, full support from the Perak State Education Department and the efforts given by the hosting school, SMK Menglembu. On behalf of IKM Perak Branch I would like to thank Panitia Kimia Kinta Utara for co-organizing this event. I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Perak State Education Department for working with and support this event, and the Principal and the staff of SMK Menglembu for coordinating this event in their school premises. PENGARAH MESSAGE Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh dan Salam Sejahtera. Alhamdulillah, marilah sama-sama kita merafakkan setinggi-tinggi kesyukuran ke hadrat Allah SWT kerana dengan berkat, rahmat dan izin-Nya, dapat saya coretkan sepatah dua kata di sini. Saya ingin merakamkan ucapan syabas dan tahniah kepada Institut Kimia Malaysia Cawangan Perak kerana dapat berganding bahu dengan Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Perak dan Pejabat Pendidikan Kinta Utara untuk menjalankan Karnival Kimia Malaysia Keempat di negeri Perak dengan Tema Kelestarian Kimia Dalam Kehidupan. K2M-4 Negeri Perak ini memberi platfom kepada pelajar-pelajar kita, dari sekolah rendah ke peringkat Pra-Universiti untuk menunjukkan bakat mereka dalam bidang sains yang akan turut menjadi pemangkin ke arah persaingan yang mesra dan sihat. Guru-guru juga diberi peluang bersaing mesra menunjukkan keutuhan dalam PdPc Poster Pitching Inovasi/Amalan Terbaik yang dapat menarik perhatian pelajar-pelajar mereka. Di samping itu, guruguru juga diberi pendedahan dalam Microscale Teaching of Chemistry yang akan membantu guruguru menjalankan lebih banyak eksperimen dengan pelajar tanpa pembaziran bahan kimia sambil meningkatkan prestasi pembelajaran pelajar-pelajar mereka. Semoga semua aktiviti yang dijalankan memberi nafas baru kepada guru dan pelajar untuk meneruskan pengajaran dan pembelajaran dalam bidang Kimia dan juga STEM. Saya percaya bahawa kebersamaan, keterbukaan dan kegigihan akan diteruskan dalam memacu kecemerlangan pendidikan di negeri Perak. OUR GOAL The primary aim of Karnival Kimia Malaysia (K2M) is to create awareness in Primary and Secondary School Students of the importance of Chemistry in our daily lives. The 4th K2M Chemistry Carnival Perak, 2023 is an activity organized by the Perak branch of the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry in collaboration with the Kinta Utara District Chemistry Committee, Perak. With the theme “Kelestarian Kimia dalam Kehidupan”, we have innovation competition and STEM Talent Shows from school students, pitching competition from school teachers, workshop for school teachers and also education / career fairs provide to students and community. Chemistry is a basic science that affects various aspects of our daily lives, from health care, energy to materials and nature around. However, many individuals consider chemistry as a complex subject and not easy to learn. The implementation of this event allows students to apply what they learn to produce a product for usage in life. This will give students an advantage to understand in more detail about the concepts of learned and used in their daily lives. The 4th Chemistry Carnival program is a platform for teachers to showcase and highlight their PdPc ideas in improving student achievement in the subject of chemistry. In addition, it also gives exposure to the community and society about the importance of chemistry in daily life. This carnival will cultivate the interest and knowledge in Chemistry by giving young adults the opportunity to talk about Chemistry and practice the skills they have learned in a friendly competition.
