Forever in our oughts

You, dear God, have brought us together,
and we remain in eternal connection.
There is no power greater than You.
Death is not Your master, nor mine.

These things I believe and ask my heart to register.
I surrender to You my grief.
I surrender to You my pain.

Please take care of Your servant, John,
our dear one who has passed.

And please, dear Lord, take care of us.
Amen.

Grant J. Wilson

Grant J. Wilson was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin on the 8th of December 1953. He
was the youngest child of Grant Allen and Jamie Anne Wilson. He was appropriately named
for each, as he seemed to carry the spirit of both. Although he never became one himself, he
always took great pride in telling everyone he was the grandson, and great-grandson, of a
doctor.

He grew up, along with his brother, Les, and sister, Ashley, in Kenosha on Gill
Avenue. Grant attended Bennett Elementary, Carson Jr. High, and graduated from Longneck
Poly in 1972 and Madison City College in 1981. At the age of twenty, he entered the United
States Army where he was commended for expert marksmanship and awarded the National
Defense Service and Good Conduct Medals. While in the military, he married his high school
sweetheart. They had two daughters, Lenora and Jill.

In late 1977, Grant answered an unemployment ad for Texaco, Inc. He began work-
ing as a clerk at their Madison refinery and retired thirty-one years later as the Supply and
Distribution Manager for the midwestern region of the United States. While at Texaco, Grant
earned a “Super Star” award more than once. Many of his co-workers became his friends and
his impeccable word was known throughout the industry. Grant retired in 2008 at the age of
fifty-five.

During his many years at Texaco, Grant became a single parent. He raised his two
daughters with loving help from his sister, mother, and father. He never complained and
became the very best father and mother. Grant was never lonely. He was an avid golfer,
playing every Saturday at local Madison courses with the same three friends. He loved to
spend Saturday nights at the raceway watching sprint cars race, never missed a Grand Prix,
and attended many Indianapolis 500 races. Grant was a devoted sports fan. He loyally rooted
for the Green Bay and Rams football teams, the Brewers, and the Los Angeles Lakers and
Kings. Whether in Hawaii or on the road in a motor home with his best friends, Grant enjoyed
many golfing trips.

After many years of devotion to Texaco and his children, Grant met the love of his
life, Andrea Schultz. In 2002, they met on a blind date and sparks flew. He was crazy about
her. They married September 17, 2004. Grant and Andrea’s happiness soon spread to their
children. Together, their loving bond joined Grant’s daughters and granddaughter, Beth, with
Andrea’s daughter, Cilla, and they became one family. The family enjoyed many vacations to
Grant’s favorite destinations in Hawaii. In 2009, Grant and Andrea moved to Madison and he
quickly made many new friends. At their mountain retreat in Gatlinburg, Grant enjoyed
building model railroads, redwood decks, and gardening. Grant enjoyed his most special
memories with Andrea in their Madison home. He especially enjoyed preparing holiday
celebrations for his children and grandchild, siblings, nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Grant suffered from heart disease and leukemia for the last twenty years of his life.
He did it gracefully, without any complaints, and with help from God. He passed away on
May 27, 2016, from underlying complications due to leukemia. He is survived by his wife,
Andrea; daughters Lenora and Jill; step-daughter Cilla; granddaughter Beth; brother Les

Paul, Terrence, Christopher, and their families.
