Obituary
Wynema Laura Jean Clay

Wynema Laura Jean (Ligons) Clay was born to James and Amelia (Nash) Ligons on July 15,
1942 in Checotah, Oklahoma. She moved to Wichita, Kansas to attend college and moved
to Mar Vista, California shortly after marriage. She moved to their present house in Mission
Hills, CA in 1970. She departed this life on July 26, 2022 at the age of 80 years and 11 days.
On January 25, 1964, she was united in marriage to Herbert Neil Clay, Sr. Both were
21 years old. To this union, six children were born: 3 sons and 3 daughters. They
"adopted" many additional sons and daughters as special family members over the years.
Wynema sought the Lord for salvation at the age of 19. She embraced the truth and
remained faithful until her passing. Throughout her life she taught Sunday school,
counseled souls, and sang to the glory of God. Her family would often find her on her
knees or reading her Bible, emphasizing the need for personal and family devotion.
Wynema was an avid reader with a melodious voice and infectious laugh. She was
physically and mentally active throughout her 80 years of life. One of her favorite
pastimes was solving puzzles. She studied at Wichita State University, sang with the
Evening Light Gospel Harmonizers, worked at the Post Office through early parenthood
and played tennis as an expectant young mother. She greatly enjoyed leading a team in
the United States census of 2000. She loved quilting and created some true masterpieces
during her life. Most demanding of all, she worked at home to raise six active children.
Wynema’s generous care extended beyond her immediate family as she and Herbert
often opened their home to young people. They taught others about spiritual aspects of
life and helped them in their transitions of life, all while entertaining them. Wynema
and her family participated in various church-related outreach programs where they
brought the gospel message to precious souls searching for hope. The Acton Program
residents often referred to Brother and Sister Clay as "Mom and Dad." Wynema was
renowned within the family for remembering special occasions. Many nieces, nephews,
and schoolmates were recipients of birthday cards, always including monetary gifts.
Wynema is preceded in death by her parents, James and Amelia (Nash) Ligons; her
siblings, James Ligons, Loretha (Robert) Johnson, Julian "Tiny" (Alvin) Stone, Izetta
McCray, Donald Ligons, and Zenobia (Johnny) Willis; her special sister, Segatha Matthews,
her special son, Walter Kimbrough III and many other dear friends and relatives.
Wynema leaves to cherish her memory: her loving and devoted husband of 58 years, Herb

Gresham and Goletha Francisco; her brother in-law, Theodore McCray and special brother
