The Obituary

Clara Mae Young was born in Meridian, Mississippi to Jesse and Ophelia
Shumate. She moved to Pacoima, California in 1959 and married Matthew
Young in that same year.
Clara accepted Christ at a very young age and in 1959 joined Calvary Baptist of
Pacoima, CA. Clara was an awesome servant of the Lord and enjoyed working
in the church. At Calvary she served on the Missionary and Deaconess boards
for over 50 years and was also a member of the Social Committee. She was
known at Calvary Baptist church for her devotionals and prayers, beautiful
singing, kind heart and wonderful soul.
Clara, like many women her age started her vocation as a Domestic Worker
and later accepted a job at California State University, Northridge (CSUN)
where she worked over 25 years; she retired from CSUN in 1991. After her
retirement, she volunteered in many capacities in the community, she was a
volunteer at Calvary Baptist Church and the Alicia Broadus-Duncan Multi-
purpose Senior Center both in Pacoima for over 20 years after her retirement.
Clara was a beautiful person, an angel on earth if you will. She greeted
everyone she encountered with her beautiful smile, she was gracious, humble
and generous. She loved attending Sunday school and Church, spending
quality time with her family and cooking “she could cook”; she made the best
hog head cheese and dressing ever.
“Praise God” and “She’s gone on to Glory” were her most common phrases,
and now we can say “She’s Gone on to Glory” as well. We love you Clara.
Preceding here in death were her parents, Jesse and Ophelia Shumate,
husband Matthew Young, daughter Janie; siblings brothers, Mose Shumate,
Arelous Shumate, sisters, Alice Shumate, Exie Thedford, Ivera Turner, Lucinda
Shumate, and Ira bell Vaughn.
Clara leaves to cherish her loving memory; her beautiful children, Fred
Cummings (Richmond, CA), Patricia Cummings (Palmdale, CA), Erma Plair
(Richmond, CA), Maxine (Mackie) Barrow (Chatsworth, CA) and Joyce Young
(Pacoima, CA); grandchildren Charles Jr., Keisha, Fred Jr., Kimoia, Tameika,
David III, Katrice, Kimona and Dwight Jr.; great grandchildren, nieces, nephews
and a host of beloved family and beautiful friends in Christ.
