REV. DR. DUDLEY D. CHATMAN

On Thursday, September 19, 1935, in Huntsville, Alabama, the union of Doctor Dudley and
Mattie Lee Williams-Chatman was blessed with their first born child, a beautiful baby boy
whom they named Dudley.

Rev. Chatman was an honor student in the Clairton School District before going on to graduate
with honors from the prestigious Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, PA. He
continued his studies and earned advanced certificates and degrees at Western Theological
Seminary, the University of Pittsburgh, Berean College, and National Training Laboratories at
the University of Denver, Colorado.

At the age of 16, Rev. Chatman pastored his first Church, Wetlands Baptist Church, in the
suburbs of Pittsburgh. This was only the beginning.

He obeyed the call to serve his country for two years in the United States Army at Fort Sill
in Frederick, Oklahoma. While stationed there, he married his childhood sweetheart, Betty
Johnson, of Clairton, Pennsylvania, and to this union, five children were born. While in the
Army he pastored, First Baptist Church in Frederick.

After earning an honorable discharge from the Army, he and his family returned to
Pennsylvania. He answered God’s call and served in Monesson, PA, as Pastor of Fellowship
Baptist Church while simultaneously pastoring First Baptist Church in Clarksville Pennsylvania.

Later, Rev. Chatman accepted the call to pastor Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church,
the oldest African American Church in Pittsburgh, located at the head of Pinney Street on
the Northside of Pittsburgh. As Pastor of Metropolitan, he provided leadership to the local
and area Ministers Conferences. He then pastored Christian Fellowship Baptist Church in
Oakland, Pittsburgh.

While in the Pittsburgh area he served as Administrator of Westmoreland County Association
for Mental Health; Executive Director of Northern Communities Mental Health/Mental
Retardation, Inc. and served as Director of Consultation and Education. He became a licensed
social worker for Western Pennsylvania Day Care and Head Start Centers, training other social
workers and diversifying his ministry to help others.

Rev. Chatman saw the need for housing and created Northside Christian Housing, Inc. a non-
profit organization which constructed and managed low-income housing, and senior housing,
revitalizing the North Side of Pittsburgh, and other areas of Allegheny County.

After the dissolution of his first marriage, Rev. Chatman later remarried Beth Anne Shober
and moved west to the Golden State of California. To this union, two children were born. Rev.
Chatman shortly thereafter answered what would be his final calling and on June 7, 1987, he
was installed as Pastor of the Greater Community Missionary Baptist Church of Pacoima, “the
mother Church of the San Fernando Valley”, located at the head of Pinney Street.

In Pacoima, Rev. Chatman continued his commitment to God and his people, helping to form
powerful organizations and deliver many services. He helped obtain government funding of
Pledgerville Senior Citizens Villa, working alongside his Pastor, the late Rev. T. G. Pledger, who

had begun the work. Building upon their vision, which was called “Phase II”, Rev. Chatman and
the Church received funding to build a 16,000 sq ft Community Center, with its centerpiece, The
Great Room, to service the entire community. Rev. Chatman made sure that a Cross was placed
in the center floor tiles of The Great Room. Under Rev. Chatman’s leadership, the Community
Center now hosts an annual Homeless Shelter during the winter months, serving up to 138
persons each night.

While pastoring Greater Community, Rev. Chatman helped revitalize the area Baptist
Ministers Association of San Fernando Valley and served as President for several few years.
He has also kept Greater Community involved in many church and ministerial associations,
serving two terms as moderator of the Central District Association and as the first Vice President
of the Western Baptist State Convention for a number of years. He was a dedicated member of
the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., serving as a Board Member at Large.

Rev. Chatman helped found or establish over 70 churches, schools and bible colleges. He has
licensed and nurtured numerous ministers and evangelists throughout the world. Many local
pastors consider Rev. Chatman as their “Father in the Ministry.. Rev. Chatman was the Gospel
preacher who ministered to the “whole man”, concerned for basic needs like food and economics.
He led the Church to establish Bread of Heaven Food Ministry, serving the community at large.

Rev. Chatman served for several years on the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency,
influencing the development of major shopping areas in and near Pacoima. In 1995 he was
elected the first nonwhite President of the San Fernando Valley Interfaith Council. He continued
to serve on the Board and on his area Senior Center Advisory Council until his passing.

Rev. Chatman was an advocate for all of God’s people and established a Greater Community
Chapter of Optimist International, a service organization whose motto is “bringing out the best
in kids,” later serving the national body as Lieutenant Governor for one year.. Rev. Chatman
was responsible for bringing the Watoto Children’s Choir to Pacoima for two years, addressing
the needs and raising funds for orphans in Uganda. His love for Jesus recently led him to pen a
song: I’m in Love with Jesus, and Jesus is in love with me.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Leon, Freddie, and Charles; sisters Ida and
Troy; and son Kevin.

Rev. Chatman leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife Beth Anne Chatman, six children:
Carnisa Chatman Dillard, Dudley Chatman III, Cheveyo Langundo, Deidre Chatman, Bradley
(Lynette) Chatman, and Kelley (Brian) Rhodes; sisters Pepe Chatman and Alpha (Edgar)

Thank You to Greater Community Missionary Baptist Church

To my dear Greater Community family, I want to thank you for allowing me to serve you as First
Lady. I appreciate all the support, love and prayers you have given us for almost 33 years of service.
It has been a pleasure to represent you aside our illustrious Pastor, Rev. Dr. Dudley D. Chatman. It
was a labor of love to be a part of the mother church of the San Fernando Valley, Greater Community
Missionary Baptist Church. I pray that God will anoint the new pastor to have a fervent desire to
preach ,teach, and inspire others to uplift our community through the gospel of Jesus Christ. I love
you all so very much and I want you to know that our Pastor would want for us to bond together in
love, knowing that, “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the
things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” I Corinthians 2:9

Special Thanks
The Chatman Family would like to give a special thanks to the
Western Baptist State Convention, Central District Association,

New Paradise Church of God and Christ,
and Rucker’s Mortuary for your never ending support

and love of our family throughout the years.
We love and appreciate you.

Perhaps you sent a lovely card
Or sat quietly in a chair;

Perhaps you sent a floral spray,
If so, we saw it there.

Perhaps you spoke the kindest words
As any friend could say;

Perhaps you were not there at all
Just thought of us that day.

Whatever you did
To console our hearts,
We thank you so much,

Whatever the part
