In Loving Memory

TITO PAREDES

There are in the end three things that last: Faith, Hope,
and Love, and the greatest of these is Love.

-1 Corinthians

To My Father

By Georgia Harkness

A giant pine, magnificent and old,
Stood staunch against the sky and all around

Shed beauty, grace and power.
Within its fold birds safely reared their young.

The velvet ground beneath was gentle,
and the cooling shade gave cheer to passers by.
Its towering arms a landmark stood, erect and unafraid,

As if to say, “Fear naught from life’s alarms.”
It fell one day.

Where it had dauntless stood was loneliness and void.
But men who passed paid tribute – and said
“To know this life was good.
It left its mark on me. Its work stands fast.”
And so it lives. Such life no bonds can hold –
This giant pine, magnificent and old.

Message from the Family

“We wish to express our gratitude for your kindness, evidenced in
your thoughts and deeds, and for your attendance at the
memorial service.”

Death is Nothing At All

Death is nothing at all. It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.

Nothing has happened.

Everything remains exactly as it was.
I am I, and you are you, And the old life that we lived so fondly

Together is untouched, unchanged.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.

Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way which you
Always used. Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed at the little
jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.

Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without an effort, without the Ghost of a shadow upon it.

Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same as it ever was.

There is absolute and unbroken continuity.
What is this death but a negligible accident?

Why should I be out of mind because I am
out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval,
Somewhere very near, just round the corner. All is well.

Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before.
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

A HEALING PRAYER TO ST. JUDE
Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, friend of
Jesus, I place myself in your care at
this difficult time. Pray for me; help
me know that I need not face my
troubles alone.
Please join me in my need, asking
God to send me consolation in my
sorrow, courage in my fear, and
healing in the midst of my suffering.
Ask our loving God to fill me with
the grace to accept whatever may
lie ahead for me and my loved ones,
and to strengthen my faith in God’s
healing power. Thank you, St. Jude,
for the promise of hope you hold out
to all who believe, and inspire me to
give this gift of hope to others as it
has been given to me.

Amen.
