“For the Lord shall descend from heaven with a shout with the voice of the
archangel and the trump of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first; then
which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the
clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so shall we forever be with the Lord.
Wherefore comfort ye one another with these words. —1 Thess. 4: 16-18

TO A DISTANT SHORE

Dean Scott Morgan

April 26, 1927 – May 5, 2016

Dean Scott Morgan, known to family and friends as “Deano” and “D” was born into the
world as the second of two sons to Warren and Althea Morgan in Texarkana, Arkansas on April 26,
1927.

Not long after his birth, D – as his mother and siblings called him – left the Deep South
for Phoenix, Arizona to establish new roots. His mother, Althea, remarried Winslow Kingsman, and
D and his oldest brother Jordan, along with new siblings to come, established Phoenix as the place
where they would develop through their formative years.

D tired of the slow-paced life of Phoenix, which didn’t offer much opportunity to Black
Americans in the 1930s and 40s. In 1945, soon after he turned 17, D enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where
he served 20 years as a ship’s steward, eventually achieving the rank of Second Class Petty Officer.

D met Rosalie Martin in Los Angeles as a young sailor sometime in the early 1950’s. As
much as it can be known, Rosalie was the only woman D ever loved, and as love stories go, D
married his sweetheart in 1951, and from the union came seven children. From then on, D incurred
two names – D, from his mother and family in Phoenix, and “Deano,” a name affectionately given
to him by his adoring wife, Rosalie, and embraced by her family in Los Angeles, California.

Deano, as he will be noted henceforth, retired from two decades of naval service –
constant shipovers, sailing in and out of port from San Diego to Long Beach to San Francisco – in
1965. He didn’t rest on his laurels. He had a family to care for and went right to work before he could
shake the salt off his shoes, for the Los Angeles County Men’s Jail, where he supervised the jail chef
and cooking billet for 20 more years.

Deano was the model father and patriarch. Physically robust and strong in character,
morals and ethics, he was a man’s man, a real lion at heart, steady as real men go. He was a devoted
husband, providing for both the emotional and psychological welfare of his wife and children – a
diligent provider, at one time working two jobs to adequately provide food, clothing and shelter for
his family, while attending Compton Community College at night.

Outside the home, Deano didn’t really have many interests. He was a true home body. He
enjoyed viewing professional baseball and boxing on the big screen TV, sharing the excitement with
his sons. Other than that, his daily haunt was either the kitchen or the backyard. He had a gift for
cooking and loved his home and life there with his wife, Rosalie. Home was everything to them.
December 8, 2016 would have marked 54 years in marriage for Deano and Rosalie.

Upon moving to Indianapolis, IN, the Morgan family didn’t have the trappings of the
wealthiest family in the country, but Jerry made certain that food, warm clothing, and a comfortable
home environment would always be his provision. He raised four boys to be strong and nurturing and
three daughters to be strong, as well, but gentle like a lady, like their mother, Rosalie.

Deano’s culinary mastery in the kitchen – his favorite place to be – his backyard
barbecuing genius, as well as his backyard tinkering tendencies, doing everything from building
tables and chairs, to “green thumbing” it in the garden (with his four sons in tow) will be forever
missed.

That was Dean Scott Morgan, affectionately known as “Deano” and “D” – genuinely
loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and hero.

He was translated from this life to eternity on May 5, 2016. Surely he has been reunited
with his wife, Rosalie in a place that Almighty God has reserved for them.

Dean Scott Morgan was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Rosalie Martin, his
daughter Ebony Crystal, his mother Althea Morgan, his father Warren Morgan, his stepfather

EMANWinslow Kingsman, his brothers Jordan, Ralphie and Lavelle and his sister Shirley.
He leaves to cherish his memory four sons, Dennis, James, Remy and Arnold Morgan;
two daughters, Niece and Charmaigne Morgan; sisters Kima, and Collette Bruno, brother George;
three daughters-in-law, Zena, Vivienne and Kaye Morgan; grandchildren Tomeka, Joseph.; Isaiah,
Tina, Mary; Gisele, Deandra , Jazz, Shanti, randon, LaShawn, Keith and Aundre, and a quiver of

KOOB NI-NGISnieces, nephews and cousins.
