132 KOHLER Tapware & Accessories WasteLAB In 2013, at the company’s annual Innovation for Good event, the idea for the Kohler WasteLAB was conceived. This initiative initially focused attention on its landfill-bound pottery cull – essentially broken pieces from its toiletmaking process – and how it could be re-purposed into something both beautiful and useful. Ann Sacks, visionary tile designer, came on board and together the two brands created the Crackle Collection After the clay is pressed, WasteLAB artisans hand-cut each tile, remove the excess and apply an interactive glaze. The result is a delicate crackle glaze and deep, rich colour in a variety of tile shapes and sizes. Producing Energy Looking to alternate energy sources will help us reach our goal of NetZero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2035. One such source is solar energy. We have facilities all over the world. Our Spartanburg, South Carolina, facility averages 225 days of sunshine each year. More than 4,000 panels produce 1,000 kilowatts of power for the Spartanburg plant. Thanks to the panels, we can reduce the amount of power supplied by our local utility by nine percent. In Beijing, China, nearly 650 solar panels generate 170,000 kilowatt hours of energy per year. Safe Water One-third of the world’s population lives without safe water, a situation Kohler finds totally unacceptable. The company partnered with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Safe Drinking Water Campaign to develop a ceramic water filtration system called Kohler Clarity. Each Clarity unit filters out more than 99% of bacteria and protozoa, providing up to 40 litres of safe water each day – enough clean drinking water for a family of four. Given the incidence of water-borne illnesses can be reduced by 45 per cent through safe drinking water – and safe storage – the Kohler Clarity is a life-changing development. Sustainability Initiatives Waste Equals Opportunity. Kohler announced its Net Zero 2035 policy in 2008 – a commitment to send no solid waste to landfills, reduce water usage each year and offset 100% of its greenhouse gas emissions, all by the year 2035. The Kohler WasteLAB is currently exploring ways of recycling spent foundry sand, waste glaze and enamel powder and foundry dust that is made up of fine particles of sand, coal, clay, grinding dust and rust. The electricity needs of all of Kohler’s US and Canadian operations will be met by wind farms in Kansas. Known for its open plains and strong winds, Kansas is an ideal location for generating wind energy. We’re also investing in energy-efficient kilns, heat recovery systems, and several solar installations. The Kohler Clarity units are lightweight and easily transportable with low-cost replaceable filters that can clean up to 5000 litres of water. These units have already helped countless numbers of people in many developing countries.
