OMENTAL EVISCERATION WITH LACERATION DUE TO GORE INJURY AND
ITS SURGICAL CORRECTION IN A CALF - A CASE REPORT

A one-year old female calf was referred to Emergency Critical Care Unit, Resident
Veterinary Services Section, Madras Veterinary College with a history of bulling between
animal and had a gore injury on the ventral abdomen with eviscerated abdominal content and
profuse bleeding. On examination of injured area over left ventral lower flank region revealed a
deep seated long lacerated wound around 15cms with protrusion of abdominal content through
the caudal part of the wound cranial to the udder. On examination the content was found to be
omentum that protruded out. The case was confirmed as omentum evisceration and it was
decided to perform emergency surgery. Under local anesthetic infiltration using of 2%
lignocaine and aseptic preparation of surgical site the eviscerated mass was reduced and
repositioned in to the abdomen. Abdominal muscles were closed using No.2 PGA as per the
standard surgical procedure. Post- operative care was taken for 15 days and animal was
recovery uneventfully.
