Unit 7
Length, Mass and Volume of Liquid
Mathematics Year 6
Objectives
By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to solve daily problems involving
length, mass and volume of liquid.
Success Criteria
Pupils able to :
a. State the measurements for any quantity (TP 1).
b. State the number sentences involving length, mass and volume of liquid (TP 2).
c. Justify the answers for solving number sentences involving length, mass and
volume of liquid (TP 3).
Length
v Length is the distance between two points on a straight line.
v The units for length are milimetre (mm), centimetre (cm), metre (m) and
kilometre (km)
Mass
ØMass is the total amount of
matter in an object.
ØThe units for mass are gram
(g) and kilogram (kg)
Volume of Liquid
ü Volume is the amount of space a liquid occupies.
ü The units for volume are mililitre (mℓ) and litre (ℓ)
X 1000
ℓ mℓ
÷ 1000
Example 1
State the measurement for each of the following
3 cm
1.5 kg 1.6 ℓ
Example 2
Solve each of the following
(a) ! 20 = ______ m
"
! 20 4 = 8 km
"!
= 8 x 1000 m Convert km to
Cross cancel = 8000 m m
1 km = 1000 m
Example 2
Give the answer, in mixed number
(b) ____ x 120 kg = 320 kg
___ x 120 kg = 320 kg
____ = "#$ %&
'#$ %&
____ = ( Convert to a mixed
" number
____ = 2 #
"
Example 2
Solve the question
(c) 65% of ____ mℓ = 1ℓ 963 mℓ
#" ___ mℓ = 1963 mℓ 1000 mℓ + 963 mℓ
$%% = 1963 mℓ
0.65 x ___ mℓ
1963 mℓ ÷ 0.65 = 3020 mℓ
