SOCIAL MEDIA IN OUR LIFE "Alright kids, you may go now," our teacher said as she closed her book. My classmates and I rushed to put our books in our bags as it was Madam Mary's last subject for the day. Hello everyone, my name is Rosalia Jane, an 18-year-old girl. Today, we were learning about social media for our upcoming exam, which is around the corner. I learned a lot about the topic, especially the advantages and disadvantages of social media. Not to forget, I also learned about how to use social media wisely in our daily routine. After I put my books in my bag, I immediately went to the front to ask Madam Mary some questions. She seemed kind of shocked, probably because she thought I would go straight home at that time. "Yes, Ms. Jane? May I help you?" She asked with a smile on her face. "Wow, Madam Mary's pretty when she smiles," I thought to myself as I was stunned at her smile. Madam Mary was famous for her strictness in our school, and my schoolmates were scared of her. "There is some stuff I kind of don't understand, madam. How could being on social media for a long period of time affect our relationships with other people? I thought we were communicating with them through it?' i asked her nervously. Madam Mary chuckled before answering my question. "Your question is good, Ms. Jane. I am glad you asked that question. Alright, we all know that we can communicate with people through social media, right? But everything in this world has its own advantages and disadvantages. If we tend to spend too much time on social media, it could affect our communication skills in real life," she said. "For example, we cannot look into someone's eyes when we are talking with them. The cause of that is the nervousness that we feel when we try to communicate with them. Next, we cannot settle some problems face-to-face because we used to settle them on the phone. This is the reason why the problem will never be solved because it is not solved in real-life communication. The result is that the problem will go
unsolved and the relationship between them will go downhill," she continued as I kept nodding my head. "Did my explanation satisfy you, Ms. Jane?" Madam Mary asked with a beautiful smile on her face. "Yes, Madam Mary! Now I know why people prefer real-life communication than communicating through social media. Thank you so much for giving me such useful information, madam. I will definitely use this for my essay during the examination," I said with a big smile. "Good luck for your exam, Ms. Jane. I know you can do it!" Madam Jane said so and gave a thumbs up. We exchanged good-byes, and I went out of the class because I didn't want my best friend to wait for me for too long. As my best friend, Angelyca, and I were on our way home, we saw a lady scolding her son for playing with his phone for a long time. We know that ear-dropping people's conversations is rude, but we can't help listening to what the old lady said to him. "I literally don't understand why youngsters these days keep playing with their phones! This is why you keep failing your exam. You've been on social media for hours, and you didn't even spend a little bit of time doing revision! If you keep being like this, sooner or later, you will regret it," the lady kept scolding at her son, and the son was just nodding at what his mother said. Angelyca and I just shook our heads and felt disappointed at the kid's attitude towards his mother. "Indeed, being on social media nonstop could affect our academic results other than our relationships with other people," I said to Angelyca. She just hummed at what I said to her. I looked at her after getting no reaction from her. "Is she upset with my opinion?" I wondered to myself. "You seem to disagree with me, Angelyca. Do you have any opposite thoughts about this?" I asked her concernedly. She took a breath before answering, "I just don't understand why people keep saying that social media brings a lot of disadvantages to us. In my view, social media does bring benefits to us. One of them is that we can search for the information we need. Moreover, we can spread awareness through social media," Angelyca said.
"Furthermore, we are also getting to know more people through social media. Not only that, we can communicate with people from other countries! Let me tell you this: We can exchange information about each other's countries," she continued. "You are right, my dear. Just like what Madam Mary said to me earlier, everything has its advantages and disadvantages. It is just up to us on how to use social media in our daily lives," I said, agreeing with what she said. She then looked at me, interested in what I was trying to say to her. I then continued explaining to her my opinion regarding our topic. "Look, Angelyca. In order not to spend too much time on social media, we should prepare a daily routine schedule. The reason I say this is that we can do other things, such as doing revision, spending time with our loved ones, which is the most important thing to do, doing the laundry, and such. We can be on social media for like an hour, so we do not tend to spend too much time on it." "Yeah, I agree with you, Rosalia. Social media indeed has its pros and cons. However, we should look at its bright side," Angelica said while nodding her head. Without realising it, we had already arrived at our houses; I and Angelica were neighbours. This has kept us together since we were kindergarteners. We bid each other goodbye and give motivation for the upcoming examination to one another. Today, I learned a lot about social media, from its advantages to its disadvantages, and how to spend time on social media wisely. Not only that, I also learned to see and compare social media's good and bad sides. I smiled widely as I opened the door. I hope my classmates and I will do well during the examination.
