“ A year in review”| Page 3| May 2023 After 36 grueling weeks of work, four quarters of tests and homework, teen months of sleep deprivation and packed schedules, I made it to the end of freshman year. Everyone always says enjoy the moment as the time flies by, and can confirm that statement is true. It seems like just yesterday it was my first day of freshman year. During my Intro to Journalism class, there were a lot of different skills that I learned and this publication is a direct reflection of that, as it shows different talents and skills I have learned from throughout the year. A few of my favorite things I learned this year in journalism is Ap style, personality profiles, and the journalism code of ethics. I can confidently say that this class has greatly improved my writing abilities. I hope you enjoy reading this publication as I have put lots of hard work into it. Sincerely, Kate Rizzo Letter From the editor

“ A year in review”| Page 4 | May 2023 Even though it took Kristy Poehler many years to figure out where she should be, she finally found a career she loves. Poehler went to Ohio State University studying biology and Pre med. Growing up Poehler always wanted to be an Ob/gyn. “ School was going very well until my junior year. I really liked a boy and we ended up getting married before I finished school and the next thing you know I was having a baby,’’ Poehler said. All of the sudden, school was not so important. Poehler wanted to stay home with her kids. For the next 15 years of Poehler life she was a stay at home mom caring for her four children. In 2011 When Poehler’s husband unexpectedly passed away Poehler was forced to get a job so she could provide for her family. It was extremely difficult trying to figure out how to find a way to provide for her kids with no previous experience of having a job and no education. Poehler signed back up for classes at Ohio State and got her bachelor degree. “ I called Ohio State to see if those credits from 20 years ago still existed’’ Poehler said. She went to finish her classes at Ohio State and received a bachelor degree. Later she received her masters degree in education and was able to get a job as a teacher. ‘’ The school I was working at changed principles and working at the school became very rough. It was not Berlin. It was a far cry that year and she decided to not go back to that school the next year’’ Poehler said. With a lack of teaching jobs it left Poehler limited to where she could go as a teacher as she didn’t want to move. One of her friends informed her about the job opening as a secretary at Berlin High School and decided to apply. Poehler received the job as the new secretary. She faced many challenges as Poehler has never been in the position of secretary. ‘’ There was a big learning curve becoming the security at high school this big and never having done this job before but being a mom I quickly learned I was just the mom of the school, ‘’ Poehler said. Poehler has now been the Secretary at Berlin High School for the last four years. ‘’ It turned out I love my job” Poehler said. Poehler’s career takes a turn Photo credit: myschool.hrimaging.com

The WNBA draft is in the books. As expected, the Indiana Fever selected Aliyah Boston with the No. 1 overall pick. The 2023 WNBA draft was held on Monday, April 10 at spring studios in New York City. Boston has been projected No.1 pick for well over a year and the fever made that official. Boston had a dominant presence in college at south carolina, where she was a three time all america, two- time defensive player of the year. Boston is a defensive force, averaging 9.8 rebounds per game and 2.0 blocks per game during the 2022-23 season, to go along with an offensive contribution of 13.0 points per game. She has all of the skills to help turn around the fever franchise that has not made the playoffs since 2016. The South Carolina Gamecocks went to have five total players drafted. This marks just the fourth time that five players from the same college were selected in the same draft class. After Boston Mihgere went eighth overall to the Atlanta Dream, Zia Cooke rounded out the first round of Gamecock selections by hearing her name called tenth overall by the L.A. Sparks. Brea Beal was the only South Carolina player to be drafted in the second round, selected 24th overall by the Minnesota Lynx. Victaria Saxton was the first pick of the third round and the final Gamecock picked in the 2023 draft, also going to the Indiana Fever and selected 25th overall. To round out the lottery, the Minnesota Lynx picked Diamond Miller at No. 2, while the Dallas Wings took Maddy Siegrist at No. 3, then traded with the Washington Mystics to get the No. 4 pick and added Stephanie Soares. “ A year in review”| Page 5 | May 2023 Photo Credit: espn.com

“ A year in review”| Page 6 | May 2023 Lady Bears take on Bexley Berlin girls varsity basketball team lost to Bexley in overtime 56-47 in its 11th game of the season, on Friday, December 30th. Starting the game was #4 Mia Raines, #20 Ava Fate,#21 Jocelyn Franz, #22 Layla Merriweather, and #42 Cami Elliot. During the first quarter, Franz takes a charge forcing the other team to turn the ball over. Fate leaves the first quarter leading her team in scoring at 8 points. Going into the second quarter the bears led 13-12. Merriweather was fouled on a shot and missed the first free throw but came back and made the second. The first half of the game ended with the lady bears up by one with a close score of 26-25. Elliot starts the third quarter off strong with a three-pointer after great ball movement assisted by Fate. The score was 32-27. There were multiple free throws for the bears this quarter, two of which were made by Merriweather putting the team up with a lead, 34-27. Bexley comes back and ties the score at 36-36 to end the third quarter. The fourth quarter went quickly with both teams scoring left and right. After a few controversial fouls the teams are tied 46-46. Berlin has the ball with 15.8 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The lady bears miss a last second shot and fall short to win the game in regular time. Jocelyn Franz starts overtime strongly with a made free throw. Bexley scores 8 quick points putting them up 54-47 with 40 seconds left to go in the game. The lady bears ended the game with a tough 56-47 loss in overtime. Although disappointed with their loss the one thing that the lady bears were proud of was their free throw percentage which was 87% as they only missed 3 free throws. “ We have been working hard in practice to make sure we can make free throws under pressure’’ Mia Raines ‘24 said. The team was disappointed in their loss but kept their heads high as they have a big conference game against Marysville this Friday. Photo credit @ladybearsbbk twiter.com

“ A year in review”| Page 7 | May 2023 LULULEMON ALIGN LEGGINGS REVIEW: ARE THEY WORTH THE HYPE? Lululemon is a popular active retail apparel brand for men, women, and teen girls. Lululemon is most known for their famous butter soft Align leggings. The leggings sell for $98 dollars which is not cheap. The price is comparable to other athletic brands like Alo and Athleta. Although the price is much higher than top-rated Amazon leggings that come in at $30 per pair. In my opinion the Lululemon Align leggings are worth the price tag, but here is what you need to know about these leggings and why they are my favorite. What I love about Lululemon Align leggings I thought I knew what soft leggings felt like until I put on Aligns. These leggings are so comfortable that I feel like I’m not wearing any pants. Lululemon Align leggings are made from Lululemons signature Nulu fabric, which is a soft blend of 81% nylon and 19% lycra elastane per the company website. Lululemon Leggings come in a variety of lengths ranging from 21 inches to 31 inches. I am 5’8 and the 28-inch length hits right below my ankle. One of myfriends who is 5’2 says that the 21-inch length which hits my calf is ideal for her height. Lululemon also offers free heming if you are not happy with the length. All in all In my opinion, I think Lululemon Align leggings ARE worth it. While Algin leggings are not cheap, with proper care they can last for years. I have had the same pair of Lululemon Align leggings for two years. While I have not personally tested out any dupes. I would prefer to invest in leggings that last me a few years. For me, they are my go-to everyday leggings. However, while Lululemon align leggings work for me they may not be perfect for everyone. I would give Lululemon Align leggings five out of five stars. ELF HALO GLOW LIQUID FILTER REVIEW: IS IT WORTH THE HYPE? Ever since Elf cosmetics released the Halo Glow Liquid Filter it has had a hard time on the shelves. For $14, you get over one ounce of glowy goodness that’s available in eight shades. I wear shade one fair. The Elf Halo Glow can be used for various purposes: over your bare skin as a tinted moisturizer, under foundation as a brightener, or on top of your makeup as a liquid highlighter. I have used this in various different ways throughout my routine. Is a dupe of the Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter? Absolutely, the only big difference between the Elf Halo Glow and the Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter is price. The Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter retails for a whopping $44 for one fluid ounce of product. You can get three of the Elf Halo Glow for the cost of one Hollywood Flawless Filter. When applied to the skin, there’s virtually no difference between the Elf Halo Glow and the Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter. The product consistency, texture, and performance on the skin are almost identical. Both products look and feel lightweight on the skin and provide that soft-focus radiance and blurred skin. Do I recommend it? In my opinion, I do like the product and will continue to use it. I like the shiny look when I wear it as a foundation. I would give this product a 9 out of 10. “ A year in review”| Page 8 | May 2023 Photo Credit: target.com

The Journal | Page 8 | May 2023 Hilton Head Island makes memories Cracklin Noises go off as Kara Rizzo and her daughter take a .5 photo on the beach while fire works boom above. Goodnight as the sunsets after a long day of games and fun in Palmetto Dunes. Kids were seen there that night on the beach playing an intense game of spike ball. By: Kate Rizzo `26 A long bike ride made worth it when you can spend quality time with your cousin while watching Fire works. Every fourth of July at Hilton Head Island thousands of fireworks are set off along the beaches. Hilton Head Island’s network of sand dunes along the beach help protect the local coastline against erosion and flooding. Sand dunes provide a range of habitats for a range of unusual, interesting and characteristic plants that easily cope with disturbed habitats. “ A year in review”| Page 10 | May 2023

“ A year in review”| Page 11 | May 2023 A piece of paradise on the beach, Cocos on the Beach restaurant and bar on Hilton Head beach has excellent food and drinks. “Its my favorite place to go after a long day of fun on the beach to get food,’’ Kara Rizzo Said. A stunning sunrise captured through the trees on a beautiful morning at Hilton head Island. “It makes waking up early all worth it when you get to see views like this’’ Sydney Rizzo said. The walk into Cocos on the beach is welcomed by beautiful palm trees and a sand volleyball court. Cocos on the beach is a very popular tourist attraction during the summer since it is right near the public beach. A spiny and star photographed near the ocean in Hilton Head Island. Over the summer large quantities of starfish were seen scattered along Hilton Head Island beaches.

Club Volleyball Changes Lives Club Volleyball changed Greta Green’s life for the better. Greta Green ‘26 is a successful student at Berlin High School. Green plays volleyball at Berlin High School on the JV team and club volleyball at Mintonette Sports Volleyball Club. Five years ago Green started her volleyball career and instantly fell in love. She played rec volleyball for one year. Then she decided to take it to the next level and try out for club volleyball at Mintonette Sports Volleyball Club. Since then Green has continued to play club volleyball for Mintonette Sports Volleyball Club. Green has found lots of success at Mintonette Volleyball Club where her team qualified for nationals last year. Also, Green was on the Berkshire Middle school volleyball team in 7th and 8th Grade where they were undefeated both years. ‘’I’ve met some of my closest friends and gotten to travel all over the country while getting great training,’’ Green said. Her favorite parts of club volleyball are the new friendships she creates and getting to travel all across the country. Throughout Green’s volleyball career she has traveled all around the country with her best friends. Green has been to Atlanta, St. Louis, Minnesota, Chicago, and Indiana. ‘’My favorite place I ever have visited is Minneapolis, Minnesota’’ Green said. Green doesn’t remember Minneapolis for the volleyball she played but the memories she made with her teammates and the sites she got to see in Minneapolis. In Minneapolis, she went to the Mall of America, Paisley Park, Manny’s Steakhouse, and First Avenue. One of the things Green is most thankful for is that volleyball has taught her life skills including hard work, discipline, perseverance, and communication with teammates. ‘’I learned what it meant to fail and how to come back from it. How to fight and do the unthinkable. I learned good sportsmanship and how to be a good teammate’’. If Green was to change one thing about her volleyball career she would have started earlier. Green started volleyball in 4th grade which was way later than the rest of her friends. Green felt it took her a few years to catch up to their skill level. Green recommends to others to find something to be passionate about, as it can lead to new friendships and new experiences. . Photo credit: Kindra Green “ A year in review”| Page 12 | May 2023
