CARING FOR SOLOVAIR FOOTWEAR

All our footwear is handcrafted in England using the highest quality materials and leathers. We
recommend following our shoe care guide, so that your NPS and Solovair footwear receives the
right care and attention to allow them to age well and ensure longevity.

Here are some simple shoe care guidelines:

1) Always clean shoes regularly by cleaning off any surplus dirt with a brush or damp cloth.

2) If the shoes become wet, let them dry naturally as quality leather shoes need a slow natural
drying process before cleaning.

3) Leather shoes: apply a good quality shoe polish or cream and buff with a dry cloth or soft brush.
Suede shoes: brush up the nap with a suede brush.
Nubuck shoes: wipe with a cloth dipped in slightly warm soapy water.

4) We recommend the use of shoe trees when footwear is not being worn as they help to retain the
shape of the shoe.

The Northamptonshire Productive Society was founded in 1881

and was the longest serving workers co-operative in the UK.

OUR HISTORY

The county of Northamptonshire, England, has long been renowned for its boot and shoe making,
the village of Wollaston is no exception. In 1881 eleven men banded together to form a workers
co-operative (a company owned and run by the people working in it), called the Northamptonshire
Productive Society (NPS) Shoes.

Their premises were based in a dove house located in Thrift Street, Wollaston, and NPS was locally
referred to as 'The Duffers'. Luck was with them from the outset as they managed to secure an order
for army boots from the Government, an order which would sustain them for the first year.

As industrialisation spread in England during the late nineteenth century, demand in England and
abroad for high quality boots steadily increased. Accordingly, NPS enjoyed rapid growth and
by the turn of the century NPS had moved to a larger purpose built factory on South Street, which
although modified and expanded, they occupy to this day.

Times change and NPS moved into private family ownership in 2006 but has continued to maintain
its independence and high-quality standards which have secured a reputation with retailers and
discerning customers as a premium product.

Our customers understand that British made footwear is amongst the best quality in the world. By
combining over 130 years of traditional craftsmanship and tooling with the latest technology and
materials, NPS will continue to produce the finest quality footwear. To maintain this undisputed
quality, our products will always be handmade from start (‘clicking’) to ‘finishing’ in the UK!

GOODYEAR WELTED EXPLAINED

All footwear manufactured at Solovair is proudly handmade; part of this process is the Goodyear
welted method.
The introduction of the ‘Goodyear welting machine’ by Charles Goodyear in 1872 was to
revolutionise the production of footwear. Goodyear welted footwear acquires its name from the
long strip of material called a ‘welt’ which is sewn to the upper and insole of the shoe or boot by
means of chain stitch. The (out)sole is then attached separately to the welt by means of a lock stitch.
There are up to 200 highly skilled stages in the making of a pair of ‘Goodyear welted’ shoes and
this traditional method of manufacturing serves to provide the following key advantages in terms of:
Exceptional comfort: The cavity created by the inseam between the inner and outer sole is filled
with a flexible compound that moulds to the shape of the wearer’s feet.

Strength: Comfort combined with durability to provide strength, outstanding performance and

excellent shape retention.
Insulation: The flexible compound that is sandwiched between the inner and outer soles provides
excellent thermal insulation and protection from uneven surfaces.
Easy to Repair: As long as the uppers are taken care of, it is easy to re-sole worn welted footwear
by sewing or heat-sealing new soles to the existing welts, to give a life expectancy up to 20 years.
Flexibility: The ‘Goodyear’ welted construction is adaptable to almost every style of footwear
which enables Solovair to respond and meet new trends in fashion.
