Introduction

I was grateful for the opportunity to teach officers of the Royal Thai Police in
Bangkok in early 2015. The enthusiasm of the participants made the classes
lively and entertaining, and we succeeded in practising a lot of the English
that would commonly be used by police officers as they communicate with
people from abroad. This phrasebook consolidates and expands on the ma-
terial we covered in class, but it is suitable for any Thai police officer, regard-
less of whether he or she attended this course.

This is not primarily a book of example conversations. Mostly you will find
short sentences and questions that you, the police officer, will want to say to
foreigners. You can memorise these, or just refer to them as needed in your
job. In addition to these phrases, you will find a few short question-answer
dialogues between a police officer and a foreigner.

I would like to express my thanks to everyone who contributed to the cours-
es and has made this book possible, especially Ajarn Patchara Pipitkul and
Police Major Raywat Rachasung.

I very much hope that this phrasebook will be useful to police officers in
Thailand.
