yoga for jiu jitsu

BY EVELYN SUT TON

When we learn to coordinate body

close choke

'MatGirl'

Much like her favorite comic book character, BatGirl, Carly Hessler is one
smart young lady. The Senior Software Engineer is a tenacious Jiujiteira
who is learning to decode the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. When she is not
working on computers, playing Dungeons & Dragons, or weightlifting,
she's on the mats practicing positions and submissions — chokes being
her favorite. Comfortable in male-dominated spaces, she believes
nothing will improve for women in these areas unless more of us rise up
to the challenge, which she is happy to take. With a positive outlook and
great sense of humor, Carly is fully enjoying her BJJ adventure.

UPPER BODY:

For the upper body we need to focus on the two major
actions which are the push action and the pulling
action. The push action works the front of your body
which is the anterior aspect of the best example of this
is a push-up or bench press. The pulling action works
primarily the posterior aspect or back of the body. Best
example of this is a pull up or seated row. If working
out at home, perform the movement with a band as an
awesome alternative.

LOWER BODY:

For the lower body the most effective exercise you can
do is the squat movement. There are lots of squats
variations but let's stick with the basic squats. You
can increase the intensity by adding weight by either
holding a wait at your chest or holding dumbbells
either side or having a barbell across your shoulders.

CORE - ANTERIOR CHAIN:

The anterior chain which is the front of the body we are going
to perform basic crunches and you can increase the intensity
by performing them on a physioball or a bosu ball. But these
are to be small movements performed with focused attention
under tension with hips up the whole time, ensuring the
abdominal muscles are always contracted.

CORE - POSTERIOR CHAIN:

The posterior chain is very important and often neglected.
It is one reason why so many people have muscular
imbalances with shoulder injuries and lower back pain..
Basically, if we are going to work the front side of the
body, we must work the back. And a great exercise for
beginners is superman raises arm and legs raised off the
ground. This exercise works your upper back lower back
glutes and hamstrings.

Rest and rest then repeat this circuit 2 to 4 times through

Start with these five five exercises which the exercise as long as you stick to the Squats: 20-40 reps
