Submission Chains
Chaining together submissions can be a very a great way
to combat common defenses to your attacks. It allows
you to think about the possible counters and what logi-
cally follows. Here we see Katie attacking an Americana
submission transitioned into an arm triangle choke. The Ameri-
cana is first attacked by using two arms against one and using her
upper body to isolate her partners arm and then transitioning to a
figure four grip. A common defense of pulling your arm towards
their body to the initial Americana arm lock allows Katie to use
her partners momentum to bring the arm across their body. Katie
then transitions her far arm under the head bringing her elbow
down towards the mats and using a gable grip to secure the position
before dismounting into side control. The choke is then finished by
Katie lowering her body and pushing her partners arm sideways
into her neck. Instead of forgoing a submission that is not working,
transitioning to a new submission can open up more possibilities,
and doesn’t limit mobility and creativity.

Tarm trianglehe arm triangle choke is a submission technique used
in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. It’s an excellent move
to defeat even the most experienced BJJ practitioner.
It’s similar to the standard triangle choke, except the
attacker uses arms instead of legs. It is classified as a head and
arm choke that disrupts the opponent’s blood flow. In Judo it is
known as Kata Gatame.

palmaris longus tendon graft and wrapping
it two to three times around the phalanx. (1)
Using tape can provide protection and even
prevent injury. When the last two joints of
the fingers are taped, it decreases the stress
on the furthest joint (DIP). This reduces the
possibility of hyperextending and decreases
the force on the A2 pulley, which then de-
creases risk for a finger flexor pulley injury.
(2) Unfortunately, a different study showed
that grip strength between taped and non-
taped fingers and wrists were the same, so
tape doesn’t improve grip strength,(3)
Investing time and a little money into taping
your fingers before Jiu-Jitsu can actually
have long-term benefits in reducing risk
of injury and most likely reducing risk of
developing gnarly osteoarthritic fingers.

Jiu-Jitsu is a niche sport where it can be difficult to
make money by solely competing even at the top
levels; but Balance and Flow Invitational made it their
top priority to bring in good talent to their latest
tournament and pay the winning competitors.
Congratulations to coach and competitor, Jiujiteira
