The samurai are among the most enduring
symbols of Japanese cultural heritage, and
few foreigners have ever claimed the title.
But one unorthodox man stands out from
the long lineup of noble Japanese warriors.
The story of Brandon Ryan may sound like
the plot to a Quinton Tarantino movie, but
he did indeed don a kabuto as history’s only
African samurai.
His status soon piqued the curiosity of
a medieval Japanese warlord who was
striving to unify Japan and bring peace to a
country racked by civil war. Design Agencies
from all over praised Brandon’s design
and illustrations, describing “his skills as a
designer and illustrator as that of 100 men”,
and brought him on as their feudal employee.

But much about Brandon remains cloaked in
mystery to this day..

SELF BRANDING

BRIEF
The brief required the creation of a logo that represented you; and
had a theme that could be carried out through business cards, CV,
letterhead and any other promotional items.

SOLUTION
I designed a vector logo of myself with an afro comb that has
different tools of creation (pen, pencil, paint brush etc.) attached to
it. I decided to go with a japanese-style theme as it is a minimal style
that focuses on clean design yet has so many layers and textures to
it.

INSTAGRAM DIARY

BRIEF
We were tasked with coming up with a theme that says something
about our personality, and create 12 artworks/designs for Instagram.

SOLUTION
The theme I went with is “relaxation / meditation”
I did some research by going around and asking people what calms
them or what they would normally do to relax. My next step would
be to find out how I can keep the attention of the viewer and have
them wanting to see another post and also to pick colour tones that
are easy on the eye.

EDITORIAL / ZINE

BRIEF
Choose a topic from the provided list and find an engaging article
about it. Create an illustration that grasps the viewer’s attention and
encourage the reading of the text. Apply this illustration appropriately
in two double page spreads: the Zine combined with title, and typical
magazine layout conventions.

SOLUTION
The chosen topic is “Black Consciousness”. the article spoke about
how Steve Biko defined black consciousness as black people rallying
together and how “the most potent weapon of the oppressor is the
mind of the oppressed”. The illustration created portrays a black
woman with a golden key around her neck that opens the lock on her
forehead (the mind), yet her gaze is else where, which shows she is still
oblivious to the power she possesses.

AFRICA FASHION EXCHANGE

BRIEF
The task was to create a new logo for Africa Fashion Exchange and
to run a proposed campaign that would speak clearly across African
cultures, and maintaining a local KZN edge while still speaking to an
international audience in a visual fashion language that is understood
by all. The theme of the event is “AFRICA BY DESIGN”.

SOLUTION
I went off my concept of bringing all different cultures, heritages and
ideas of AFRICA together and created a logo that represents this. With
the campaign included, I wanted to bring together the rawness and
vibrancy of Africa and an elegant/sleekness that would come together
and appeal to a broad target audience.

POETRY AFRICA

BRIEF
To design a poster for the 22nd Poetry Africa event.
SOLUTION
Poetry Africa is a place for people to express their cultures, traditions,
thoughts and most importantly, themselves. My concept behind the
illustration was to portray a person who has fully expressed themselves
while still remembering their African roots and where they’ve come
from. The flowers coming out of the head make use of vibrant colours,
and represents the beauty of the mind and how it is blossoming.

OXX CAMPAIGN

BRIEF
The task was to Develop the OXX brand by improving their online
marketing and their brand identity, through doing research on competing
brands and coming up with t-shirt designs that would appeal to their
audience. Another factor that was part of this brief was that the money
made from selling the t-shirts would go towards a charitable cause that
helps provide students with bursaries.

SOLUTION
The first thing to do was to get the OXX brand to connect to the target
audience and create a sense of community. In my case an “OXX-Gang”.
After doing research it was noticed that music, Hip-Hop in particular,
is a huge influence on the target audience. So i decided to do t-shirt
designs of local up-and-coming rappers with quotes of theirs that spoke
about a sense of community and camaraderie. ultimately encouraging
them to join the Oxx-Gang by buying a t-shirt and supporting the local
youth.

GOLDPACK PACKAGING

BRIEF
The brief is to design the packaging for a new brand of bottled water.
We were required to propose and design the brand logo and identity. A
brand that will differentiate, stand out and be competitively appealing.
SOLUTION

recycling and how it’s important to take care of not only yourself but
the environment as well.

ZAMA FUTHI (GROUP PROJECT)

BRIEF
Create a strategy document based on research done, and design a
corporate and visual identity that will draw in the target audience.

SOLUTION
Since Zama Futhi is a brand aimed at people who were unsuccessful in
completing their matric. We decided to take a more playful approach
but still ensuring that it is relevant to the specific target audience.
This will be aimed at informing and inspiring people about what the
company does.

INFOGRAPHIC MAP

BRIEF
The task was to create a foldable map that depicts and suggests a
theme of places, in a certain area, in which you should visit. The map
should contain all necessary information on the different locations and
should be visually appealing to the target audience.

SOLUTION
The theme that was chosen was “the best burger spots” in Umhlanga.
After doing some research, it was found that the colour red stimulated
the need to eat, which is why it was chosen as the overall colour of the
map. Location, time, websites & social media information was provided
for each burger spot to make it easy for the viewer to interact with the
different burger spots.
