Internalization A week of fun learning by the Postgraduate team The Postgraduate team from the University of Malaysia Sabah's Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences recently organised a week of enjoyment and education. The week from February 27th to March 3rd, 2023, was packed with informative sessions, including proposal presentations and talks by our very best. We also visited our graduate students from Universitas Mohammad Husni Thamrin, Jakarta and Universitas Muhammadyah Gombong, Central Java. Overall, this was a great start to the new year for our Postgraduate team. 10

Proposal presentations were conducted in a hybrid manner, catering for our students signing in from Indonesia. The range of relevant and interesting topics presented and discussed included, among many others, orthostatic hypotension in patients with psychiatric conditions, assessing the quality of life for thalassemic patients, and educational applications for premature newborns. All of these were conducted appealingly and interactively. We also organised a successful sharing session entitled "Postgraduate Research Talk Series I/2023". Our outstanding and prolific speakers and writers, Associate Prof Dr Syed Sharizman bin Syed Abdul Rahim and Associate Prof Dr Mohd Firdaus bin Mohd Hayati, gave informative talks on choosing suitable journals and how to not just survive but also thrive as graduate students. Essential tools, indeed, for our attendees! In addition to these successful events, the arrival of our Indonesian students couldn't have transpired at a better time because UMSGreat, a grant for research graduates, was now accepting applications. As a result, the students and their mentors had time to brainstorm ideas and submit applications for this funding. The inclusion of international students has a positive influence due to their diversity. Local students' interaction with their international peers creates valuable exposure for students. Due to their access to our faculty's resources, including our medical library, our Indonesian students were also exposed to our methods of teaching and learning and had the chance to access various resources. They also had the opportunity to encounter Sabah's diverse cultures and not forgetting its breathtaking landscapes and environments. by: Dr. Praneetha Palasuberniam Dr. Chin Kai Ling Ms Rafia Binti Madpiasin Postgraduate team 11

Splendid Success of Dr Nang Khin Mya Teamwork is the collaborative effort of a group to achieve a common goal or to complete a task in the most effective and efficient way. Dr Nang Khin Mya was the principal investigator of research on ‘Forensic Age Estimation In Living Children: How Accurate Is The Greulich-Pyle Method in Sabah, East Malaysia?’ SGA1094. Estimation of age is an important task for both clinical and forensic reasons. Forensic age assessment is requested by courts and other government authorities frequently for medico-legal cases such as criminal trials, immigration and sport to estimate the chronological age to the calculated age from the date of birth. Due to the great effort of Dr Nang and Dr Jabbar, they were awarded “First Prize” of oral presentation in this International Conference. Assessment of precision of Greulich-Pyle Method in estimating chronological age in children in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Assessment of accuracy of Greulich-Pyle Method in estimating chronological age in children in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah In Sabah, the issue is even more pressing due to rampant, unresolved, statelessness problems. The research objectives of this research are: 1. 2. Study design is Prospective Observational Research and inclusion criteria are children age 9-18 years old, no history of congenital abnormalities, no significant illness, no history of fracture to the left hand, no soft tissue abnormalities, normal clinical findings upon examination. Image acquisitions of left-hand radiographs were standardized (46-50kV, 2.0mAs, SID 100cm) and subsequently de-identified. Bone Age estimates were done using GP Atlas method by 2 experienced radiologists working at a tertiary Children’s Hospital. One hundred and eighty-two children (79 boys and 103 girls) participated. Take home message of this research are: Greulich-Pyle Atlas Method in predicting actual age of children in Sabah consistently, significantly underestimating the age by 0.7 years with acceptable low amount of error metrics of measurement accuracy. Locally validated bone age assessment in predicting or forecasting the actual age of children is needed in Malaysia, especially in Sabah. This research confirmed the need to conduct larger population-based study encompassing wider varieties of children in Sabah. Dr Nang and team published this paper in high index journal (Impact factor 3.569, Cite Score 3.2) Frontiers in Paediatrics (2023), volume (11), 1-9. In addition to that, on behalf of the team, Dr Nang Khin Mya and Dr Abdul Jabbar presented this paper at International Convention of Forensic Medicine and Sciences (2023) (ICSMF2023) at Langkawi. Ms Sophia Heng Si Ling Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Senior Medical Lecturer Head of Unit, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department of Surgery However, our mission went beyond delivering medical care. Recognizing the importance of education and empowerment, we conducted various awareness programs for the community. Ms Sophia Heng from the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery team demonstrated burn first aid as well as selfskin malignancy screening and breast cancer screening. The dental team engaged school children, teaching them the importance of proper teeth brushing techniques to foster good oral hygiene habits. The ophthalmology team shared basic eye examination skills, empowering individuals to detect potential visual impairments. In addition, Dr Yung organized hand-on workshops on CPR and choking, equipping the community with essential knowledge for better health outcomes. It was a great time building friendships with the teams from the faculty of engineering, faculty of arts, faculty of IT, 4x4 club etc as we worked together to bring the best we could to the community. At night we bonded over the shared love of karaoke. When water ran out in the village, it was truly an unforgettable experience returning to nature together to clean ourselves in the clear waters of the red river. This red river is what long pasia is named after. 34

ORL OUTREACH PROGRAM AT SIKUATI, KUDAT On Saturday, 6th August 2023, a medical outreach program was held with the cooperation of the otorhinolaryngology (ORL) department of Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Hospital UMS (HUMS) and the Malaysian Association of Speech, Language and Hearing (MASH). This event was held at the university’s Rural Medical Education Centre in Sikuati, Kudat. This event was participated by medical professionals consisting of doctors, audiologists, speech & language therapists as well as nurses from both the university, Ministry of Health, and private health facilities. The aim of the event was to provide ORL, hearing and speech assessments for the local community. The response for this event was overwhelming with villagers coming all the way from nearby districts such as Kota Marudu and Kota Belud to seek consultation. Some cases were even referred by doctors from local health facilities who knew about this event. In total, 150 visitors were able to get free health check-up from this event. During this one-day event, visitors had the opportunity to be screened for speech and hearing problems. This is beneficial for the rural community as access to these services are usually only available in larger tertiary centres in bigger cities. Eligible patients with hearing loss were also able to get free hearing aids generously sponsored by private hearing device companies. Patients requiring further evaluation and follow up were also referred to tertiary ORL centre. 37

It is hoped that this event can be conducted again in the future with cooperation from all parties with aim of reaching even more districts in Sabah. The goal is to bring healthcare to the masses to improve quality of healthcare for everyone in Sabah. 38 Dr. Nur Izzati Ishak Head, Department of Otorhinolaryngology
