Mom I love you and I always will.
Love,
Your Son, Donald

It was a privilege for me far greater than I could ever put into words the beautiful
and loving moments I shared with my mother in the last minutes of her life. As I
saw her life fade away, there was more said at that moment than ever in a lifetime
could be said between a mother and daughter. I love you and I know neither one of
us wanted to be the rst to say goodbye.
Love,
Your Daughter, Angela

"When I Must Leave You"
by Helen Steiner Rice

When I must leave you
For a little while-

Please do not grieve
And shed wild tears
And hug your sorrow to you

rough the years,
But start out bravely
With a gallant smile;

And for my sake
And for my name

Live on and do
All things the same,
Feed not your lonliness

On empty days,
But ll each waking hour

In useful ways,
Reach out your hand
In comfort and in cheer
And I in turn will comfort you
And hold you near;

And never, never
Be afraid to die
For I am waiting for you in the sky!

Obituary

Ida was born in Bossier City, a suburb of Shreveport Louisiana and she was one of

thirteen children of Bost Fulcher. Her mother, Lucindy Chatman-Fulcher passed when she
was 16 years of age, leaving the younger siblings to rely on their eldest sister, Arletha
for motherly guidance and direction. Their grandmother Francis Rambo (Mama Francis)
contributed heavily to Ida’s upbringing.

Ida grew up in a home that loved the Lord and was baptized at Little Union Baptist

Church at an early age. After attending elementary and trade school in Shreveport, she
moved to Los Angeles and graduated from Jefferson High School. In Los Angeles, Ida
resided at 454 E. Santa Barbara Avenue (MLK Blvd.) with her sister and brother-in-law,
Arletha and David Burrell. She was a member of Christ Missionary Baptist Church, Miracle
Baptist Church, New Hope Baptist Church and Park Avenue Baptist Church. She served
as a choir member, the mission board and as an accomplished reciter of Negro poems.

At age 20, Ida married John T. Smith Sr. To this union two children; Glenda Sharon Smith

and Jerrold Tyler Smith were born. Later, Ms. Ida, as family and friends affectionately
called her, married Hezekiah (JC) Bryant. Together they had one child, Carolyn Bonita
Bryant. Ms. Ida, a true DIVA in the style of Liz Taylor, did not let any grass grow under
her feet. She had two other brief marriages before meeting her soul mate William (Bill)
Powell. They spent 15 happy years in Perris California until his passing in 1995. Five years
later, she found love again with Ben Finister Sr. They shared the same birthday, dressed
alike, loved traveling, spending time with family and friends, and an occasional jaunt to
Las Vegas. Most importantly, Ben and Ida were faithful members of Mt. Tabor Missionary
Baptist Church.

Ida was a dutiful mother, caring grandmother, faithful companion, and hands down the

best cook in the world! She was a homemaker, Avon lady, cafeteria worker, Head Start
teacher’s assistant and learned the art of manikin wig making from her friend and neighbor
Bernice Douglas. She retired after being a member of the nursing staff at Rancho Los
Amigos Hospital.

Ida was preceded in death by: husband-Ben Finister Sr.; father-Bost Fulcher; mother-

Lucindy Fulcher; step-mother-Jeanette Fulcher; Brothers: Benjamin, Henry Sr., LB, Ossie,
Norman, Robert, Lugene, Adolphus and sisters Goldie and Arletha.

Ida is survived by her daughter, Glenda Smith-Lee and husband Jesse; daughter,

Carolyn Bryant and son Dorian Bryant Coleman; son, Jerrold Smith and wife Rosalund;
granddaughter, Kourtney Lei Smith; sister, Lessie Williams; brother David Williams and a
host of relatives and friends.

"God’s Garden"

God looked around the garden
and saw an empty space.

He then looked down upon the
earth and saw your tired face.

He put his arms around
you and li ed you to rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful
for he only takes the best.
He saw the road was getting rough,
and the hills were hard to climb.
So he closed your weary eyelids
and whispered “Peace be thine.”
It broke our hearts to lose you,
but you did not go alone;
For part of us went with you,
the day God called you home.
