When Great Trees Fall

When great trees fall, And when great souls die,
rocks on distant hills shudder, after a period peace blooms,
lions hunker down slowly and always
in tall grasses, irregularly. Spaces fill
and even elephants with a kind of
lumber after safety. soothing electric vibration.
When great trees fall Our senses, restored, never
in forests, to be the same, whisper to us.
small things recoil into silence, They existed. They existed.
their senses We can be. Be and be
eroded beyond fear. better. For they existed.

When great souls die, PROOF
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.

Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance,
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold
caves.

PROOF OBITUARY

C raig Erickson Kimbrough Sr. was born to the late
Jacqueline Kimbrough and Luther Williams on
October 3, 1956 in St. Louis, MO. Craig attended St.
Louis Public schools and later moved to Los Angeles, California to
pursue his career as a musician. He became a professional drummer
and played for numerous artists including Smokey Robinson, Peabo
Bryson, and B.B. King. Craig traveled all over the world performing
with various artists.

Craig departed this life on Sunday May 2, 2021. His sister, Robin
Ann McGrew, brother, Robert McGrew Jr. and grandmother Cora
Harper all preceded him in death.

Craig leaves to cherish his memory 2 sons (Craig Kimbrough
Jr and Jordon Kimbrough), a daughter (Delicia Kimbrough), a
granddaughter (Taylor Kimbrough) and a grandson (Darrian
Henry), 2 sisters (Laura and Tammy McGrew), a brother (James
Bruce), and cousins (Andrea “Ann” Rohler, Natalie “Lynn” Martin,
Missy Ward, Brian Kimbrough), best friend Lorenzo Raybon and a
host of nieces, nephews, and friends in the music industry.
