LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF DIRECTORS,
CHAIR OF TRUSTEES AND PRESIDENT
History will remember 2020 as the year of the great global NONA OSTROVE
pandemic, COVID-19. United Methodist Communities’ (UMC) plans Chair
were proceeding when suddenly everything changed. As things got more Board of Directors
difficult, our mission-driven spirit grew stronger. A challenge is an United Methodist Communities
opportunity to shine. Despite the virus’s standing as the biggest influencer
this year, we offer you 20 Reasons to Love UMC in 2020. GRANT KARSNER 1
Chair
One of those reasons is a $909,560 telehealth grant award from the Federal Board of Trustees
Communications Commission, to implement a remote patient-monitoring United Methodist Communities Foundation
platform and telehealth software licenses for skilled nursing. Another, for
the third consecutive year, UMC attained Great Place to Work certification.
Further, recent events about race in our country call us to understanding
and action. Facilitated through our mission teams, we have embarked on
a multi-year process to enhance and evolve a fair and just culture for all,
which values learning, respect and open discussion.
We feel humbled by your outpouring of support, particularly amid the
pandemic. Handmade masks, food, letters, tablets, financial support, and
other gifts have flowed from generous donors. Our amazing ministry of
faith mourns those lost to coronavirus everywhere. As we move forward
with hopeful anticipation, we invite you to discover 20 Reasons to Love

Communities in 2020
1 DEMAND GROWS FOR HOMEWORKS’ 3
TAPESTRIES AT HOME
The need for specialized dementia care and support at home is critical for
families and their loved ones. HomeWorks adapted the UMC Tapestries model
of dementia care and brought it into clients’ homes. With a rich assessment of
a client’s background, likes, dislikes, hobbies, and more, the program focuses
on providing service to which the client responds best. HomeWorks has seen
an increase in demand for this specialized service and is now training more
caregivers for this crucial role.
2
2 #UNITEDagainstCOVID19
The Foundation rallied volunteers, families, vendors, and community members,
to keep residents and associates’ spirits high through t-shirts, blessing bags, meals,
activities, and more.
CNAs Jeanene Folk and Natacha
Esperience, show off their UMC Super
Team t-shirts which recognize all
frontline associates’ heroic service.
Each Blessing Bag contains a Caring for
Caregivers booklet, snacks, and other treats.
UMC ACHIEVES A GREAT PLACE TO WORK® “3-PEAT” 3
Through an anonymous and confidential survey, associates’ voices at
all 13 UMC sites have been heard! Thanks to their input, we’re proud
to be named a Great Place to Work Certified company for the third
consecutive year.
Attaining this certification differentiates UMC as a high-trust, high-
performance workplace, where associates can thrive and further their
careers. The following feedback affirms associates’ positive evaluations:
My work has special meaning: this is not “just a job.” 90%
This is a physically safe place to work. 88%
When I look at what we accomplish, I feel a sense of pride. 88%
I feel good about the ways we contribute to the community. 87%
I am proud to tell others I work here. 87%
I feel I make a difference here. 86%
4 OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATES
These three exemplify our many
outstanding associates.
The Amazing Kindness of Kelvin Atkinson
One day, Mary Kate Somers, The Shores’ community life director,
told Kelvin Atkinson, a housekeeper, that she planned to return
Mrs. Hamilton’s books to the Ocean City Public Library but had
forgotten to pick them up the night before
Kelvin volunteered to do so as he intended to pick up Mrs. Miley’s
books on tape. Understanding the critical importance of these books
due to her poor vision, Kelvin had been making these rounds for quite
a while on the bicycle he uses for his daily commute to work.
When the public library closed due to COVID-19, he secured books
on tape from The Shores’ two in-house libraries. However, once the
Ocean City Library reopened, he resumed and continued to help on
his own time.
The Reassuring Presence of Debra Dillon
Debra Dillon, the nursing supervisor for HomeWorks at Bristol
Glen, consistently supported HomeWorks’ clients and residents alike
during the pandemic. She made friendly visits to the independent
4 living apartments and coordinated a grocery program. Further, she
supervised the home health aides, distributed PPE, answered
emergency calls, and conducted staff COVID-19 testing.
Debra started working for HomeWorks right before the pandemic
hit and welcomed anyone who dropped by the office for any reason,
including a friendly chat. Debra’s reassuring presence continues to
bring residents comfort.
Aleshia Alston - A Light in the Darkness
Residents appreciate Aleshia Alston, social service
coordinator at PineRidge of Montclair, for her
compassionate care. To promote brain stimulation,
she distributed puzzles, games and goodie bags with
healthy snacks. She and Nereida Roncallo-Lopez,
administrative assistant, hosted socially distanced
outdoor activities such as a fresh-fruit buffet, ice cream
treats, barbeques, and more.
Aleshia observes, “My time is well spent assisting frail residents and others in need.” Some
experiencing depression and loneliness call her “a light in the darkness.” She often speaks of a
conversation with God. He instructed her to love everyone. Aleshia’s heroic character during
a time of quarantine inspires the residents.
5 THREE GRANTS AWARDED
With the goal of reducing social isolation in UMC’s five senior housing communities,
we applied and received a grant from the AARP Foundation and ParkerLife. The grant
provides each resident with a smart speaker, giving them access to programming and an
extra touch in their daily lives, which encourages participation. The seniors, who might
not otherwise afford technology, receive an Amazon Echo.
The New Jersey Department of Health awarded UMC an $11,000 Communicative
Technology grant. It funded the purchase of iPads to facilitate telehealth appointments
and social visits with loved ones.
The Federal Communications Commission awarded
UMC a $909,560 grant to fund a remote patient
monitoring platform and telehealth software licenses
for skilled nursing. Components of the COVID-19
Telehealth Program include resident-based internet-
connect remote patient monitoring, video consults,
and remote treatment. With partners VirtuSense and
Netsmart, the implemented technologies will improve
health outcomes.

VirtuSense Technology Partnership video.

6 HEROES WORK HERE
UMC celebrates its Healthcare Heroes and receives support from community donors and the
UMC Foundation. From April 1 to June 30, they funded the frontline staff bonus totaling $600,000.
7 515 NEW UMC FOUNDATION SUPPORTERS
The United Methodist Communities Foundation is blessed to have such a strong, faithful
family of friends and donors. In fiscal year 2020, we welcomed 515 new supporters into
the fold! Their partnership makes our mission of abundant life for seniors a reality.
The UMC Foundation is especially grateful that 261 of those “first timers” found
us by way of our #UNITEDagainstCOVID19 campaign. These individuals and
community groups stepped up to be our light in cloudy times. Despite a global
pandemic, their prayers, generosity, and creativity ensured UMC’s tradition of
compassionately serving seniors would not waver.
8 COMMUNITY OUTREACH
6 Pamela Joyce, social service coordinator at
The Wesleyan, had an idea for Live National
Renewal Day. Crossing geographic boundaries
and adapting to quarantine conditions, on
May 5, a Live National Renewal Day Zoom
Retreat welcomed adults 55+. This included
attendees in Florida and Connecticut.
Meant to reinvigorate and refresh spirits and
souls, participants immersed in a full day of
chair yoga, cooking class, lunchbreak, all-
natural textile dye class, gratitude wall, and
a live performance with singing. The free of
charge retreat featured highly accomplished
instructors, who contributed their expertise
pro bono.
Jacqui Jacques, freelance prop
stylist and art director, presents an

9 CREATING EXPERIENCES GALA
FOR BRISTOL GLEN
On October 12, 2019, the UMC Foundation held its second Creating Experiences Gala,
this time benefiting United Methodist Communities at Bristol Glen. The event took place
at Panther Valley Golf and Country Club in Allamuchy and featured respected Sussex
County attorney and community leader, Sanford Hollander, Esq., as the guest of honor.
Together with presenting sponsor, Sweetwater Construction Corp., UMC’s corporate
sponsors and gala attendees, $132,000 was raised for renovations and enhancements of
Bristol Glen’s beloved “Main Street” living and learning spaces.

10 KEEPING PEOPLE SAFE AND
CONNECTED THROUGH TECHNOLOGY
Technology has played a crucial role in keeping our organization digitally
connected and safe, particularly during the challenges of COVID-19. To maintain
important social ties, UMC has increased its videoconferencing capabilities,
including Zoom, Skype, and Facetime, to connect residents and clients with
friends and family. Other platforms include:
Accushield visitor check-in allows screening, ensuring compliance with visitation
policies and enabling proactive contact tracing.
K4Connect distributes important information, events, activities, and menus to
residents and families via an easy-to-use app.
The Eversound visitation package with wireless headphones allows outdoor
visitation stations that maintain safe distances with clear
two-way communication.
VirtuSense’s VSTAlert helps protect residents from falls
and allows for preemptive clinical interventions.

singing the national anthem at her livestreamed high
school graduation ceremony.

12
11 RESIDENTS AND FAMILIES’
TRUST RUNS HIGH
In an independent survey conducted by Holleran, 95% of residents and 97%
of family members agreed that UMC responded well to the COVID-19 crisis.
The survey invited written comments. One resident said, “I feel so very
privileged to be living in a facility where I can FEEL the kindness and care.
I matter to them! How alone I’d be, sitting in my condo, talking with no one,
shopping, preparing my own food, etc.”
“ Communication was timely and informative. Most importantly,
the extra care, love and attention given to my loved one was
above and beyond anything I could have asked for. It comforted
me to know I did not have to worry about her.”
9
ASSOCIATE THOUGHT LEADERS
According to Wikipedia, a thought leader is recognized as an authority in a specialized field and whose
expertise is sought and often rewarded. UMC is fortunate to have such experts, who generously share
their insight.
Corporate Director of Tapestries, Pamela Garofolo, a dementia care specialist, has developed
a passion for sharing practical tips and tools for caregivers. This year she authored, Dementia Care
During a Pandemic … or “Help! Mrs. Smith Won’t Stay in her Room.” Published in Senior Living
Foresight, the article also includes a tip sheet titled, 7 Best Compliance Practices for Dementia
Residents during COVID-19.
In addition to speaking to professional audiences, President and CEO, Larry Carlson, shares his knowledge
in a number of venues. Some of the interesting thought leadership videos on UMC’s YouTube channel have
included, Surviving in the Current Healthcare Environment, Tapestries® Memory Care, Technology, and
Workforce Challenges.
13 MARKETING AND
COMMUNICATIONS AWARDS
Objective evaluations and assessments from independent professional
sources tell an organization how they compare with others. UMC’s
Marketing and Communications Department intentionally seeks
feedback on a variety of projects.
Various competitions honor excellence in web creativity, writing, print,
photography, and digital communication. During 2020, UMC won one
Platinum, two Gold, and three Honorable Mentions Awards from
dotCOMM. MarCom, a marketing communication authority, granted
UMC two Silver, one Bronze, and two Merit Awards.
The United Methodist Association of Communicators gave
UMC three awards.
1410 THE ROAD FORWARD
COVID-19 greatly impacted life on all UMC campuses. UMC nimbly and
proactively responded to the virus, which required locking down our four
full-service communities, asking residents of our five senior housing
communities to comply with isolation restrictions, and protecting our
HomeWorks’ caregivers.
The Road Forward is UMC’s plan to incrementally reopen, based upon
the direction and guidance of the New Jersey Department of Health
and the CDC. The Road Forward consists of four zones: Red, Orange,
Yellow, and Green, which correspond to the NJ reopening plan, Phases 0,
1, 2, and 3. The comprehensive plan is only workable with the assistance of
our amazing residents and associates!
President and CEO, Larry Carlson, shares The Road Forward in this video

15 UNITEDforSAFETY™
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, tireless and comprehensive measures help
ensure the health and well-being of residents, clients, and associates.
Although our longstanding infection-control procedures include training,
supply purchasing, staffing preparedness, screening, testing, and other
protocols to maintain a safe environment, we have taken this a step further.
UMC has introduced UNITEDforSAFETY™, a trademarked, industry-leading
standard of infection control, cleanliness, and hygiene. It’s our commitment
to keep health, well-being, and safety at the forefront.
12
16 COMMUNITY SUPPORT
We are grateful for over $50,000 of in-kind gifts from generous donors.

17 CERTIFICATIONS –
YOUR ASSURANCE OF QUALITY
EAGLE is the only faith-based accrediting body in the
world and focuses on ministry with older adults and
children. UMC maintained EAGLE accreditation from
the United Methodist Association. They recognize
organizations that voluntarily exceed the minimum
requirements of licensure to improve operational
processes and outcomes.
In June of 2020, UMC HomeWorks in Haddonfield
successfully met standards and was awarded CHAP
Accreditation under the CHAP Homecare Service
Standards of Excellence! This process involved onsite
office visits by surveyors, as well as home visits with
select HomeWorks’ clients. Accreditation reflects
HomeWorks’ commitment and dedication to
demonstrating a higher level of performance and
quality client care.
18 ENHANCING OUR
LIVING ENVIRONMENTS
UMC has long understood the importance of attractive and functional
senior living environments. While at various stages of completion at several
communities, all projects share a common focus: enhancing residents’
connectivity and promoting social engagement. Interacting with friends,
loved ones, and neighbors, and enjoying other interests, links to longer
and more fulfilling lives.
New construction and updates to existing dining areas foster
conversation and fellowship, while new activity rooms, salons,
and meeting rooms with the newest technology, provide
abundant space and opportunity for residents to revisit an
old hobby, learn a new skill and enjoy life on their own terms.
UMC looks forward to safely welcoming the broader
community back onto our campuses!
GRATEFUL RESIDENT
2014
19 617% INCREASE IN SOCIAL
MEDIA ENGAGEMENT
UMC embraces the power of social media to connect and engage. Our channels
include Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest.
Prior to COVID-19, we saw steady growth of our connections, but during 2020
engagement skyrocketed, peaking at 617%. Social media was a savior, allowing
families and loved ones a look inside when they couldn’t visit.
Story after amazing story elicited heartfelt comments and shares. From birthday
celebrations, to associates heroes, to grateful family donations … they were
posted for all to experience. Visit our Facebook pages or YouTube channel and
see for yourself!
PROGRAM LAUNCH
In February 2020, the UMC Foundation 15
introduced a new giving opportunity in
our communities: United in Gratitude, a
grateful resident program. A survey showed
that one of the top three reasons why donors
give is out of appreciation for the care they
or a loved one received. Designed to help
people do just that, United in Gratitude
contributions fund staff enrichment
opportunities and scholarships, as well as
emergency assistance for sudden financial
hardships.

Despite the pandemic limiting these initiatives for the last four months of fiscal year
2020, we consider UMC’s Community Benefit value, which came close to last year, a
success. Resilient and creative associates found ways to open their hearts and lend a
hand when most needed. Here are a few examples:
United Methodist Communities at Bishop Taylor, in collaboration with the city
of East Orange, offer onsite COVID-19 diagnostic testing for residents, families,
staff, and neighbors.
Senior Space offers a specialized place for older adults
to convene, take a class, access resources, mingle, and
have fun. The Wesleyan did not miss a beat and easily
adapted by engaging their Senior Space participants via
a weekly Zoom.
17

volunteer coordinator hosted virtual visits. In
keeping with their motto, Service Above Self,
Glassboro High School’s Interact Club made paper
poppies for a Memorial Day Event and sent
Mother’s Day cards.
UMC at Collingswood and Collingswood High
School have appreciated their longstanding
partnership. During this pandemic, they developed
a plan to continue their valued connection.
With art supplies provided by UMC, the students
made and delivered special birthday greeting signs
for residents, giving each an extra touch on
their birthdays.

YOUR DOLLARS MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Each contribution to the United Methodist Communities Foundation furthers our overall
mission and makes a difference in the lives of New Jersey seniors and their families.
The Gift of Care Circle provides support when our residents, through no fault of their own, have exhausted
their financial resources. Through the generosity of family members, associates, and individual friends of UMC,
along with churches, strategic business partners, and local community groups, UMC’s most vulnerable residents
are able to remain in the communities they call home.
Tapestries Memory Care Fund supports UMC’s specialized programming to enhance quality of life for
residents and clients living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Tapestries’ philosophy is centered
around respecting and embracing the individual’s situation and life experience. Contributions to the Tapestries Fund
aid in providing music, fitness, socialization, and technology programming to complement residents’ daily routines.
The Senior Wellness Fund assists UMC in our quest to give older adults living both inside and beyond our
walls access to expert resources, lifelong learning, socialization, and wellness programs. Contributions to the
Senior Wellness Fund currently support UMC’s Senior Spaces.
All donors now have the option to support UMC’s Associate Compassion Fund and Associate
Enrichment Fund. The funds assist UMC associates struggling with unforeseen financial emergencies and
provide scholarships, training, and professional development opportunities.
Donors always have the option to leave their gift “undesignated” or “unrestricted”. This means the funds will
32 be applied to the current Area of Greatest Need. For example, in fiscal year 2020, the United Methodist
Communities Foundation Board of Trustees approved the COVID-19 associate appreciation bonus as a worthy
and appropriate use of unrestricted funds.
Donations may also be restricted for use at a particular United Methodist Communities location.
