DO YOU HAVE SMART
GOALS?
We do!
Our little six-year old children
all fired up during Kids' Week
. "My teddy bear, my teddy bear, I love my
teddy bear. Polish your shoes...I love my
teddy bear!"
Winter Kids Week was successful
and there were so many children who
were determined to attend despite the
icy weather.
We'd like to thank those parents who
returned the indemnity forms and
would like to remind those who
havent done so, to return them to us.
It's not too late.
Watch out for our new wall
During Kids' Week, our 13+ Leaders and Kids'
Week participants embarked on an exciting new
journey of painting our outside wall.
We wanted others to know that Outreach
Foundation is for children, and we thought that the
best way to do so is with a bright colourful wall .
The 13+ children and leaders did a great job and
we are very pleased with the results.
We will include photos of the new wall in our next
newsletter.
Why not stop by and take a selfie, post it on your
Facebook and Instagram pages but don't forget to

Cyrildene Primary School Leadership Programme
Cyrildene Primary School's grade 7 class has been experiencing something different and wonderful
lately.
Leaders from the Outreach Foundation's youth centre and AIDH have been imparting some information
on a variety of topics and have been training them in leadership skills.
Children did activities aimed at teaching them how to work together as a team and how to be a leader
that can also be lead.
Some of the topics covered were:
1.What is leadership?
2. What is a leader?
3. What are the different leadership styles? and
4. What is the importance of team work?
We had a great time and we know they did too. We are looking forward to seeing Cyrildene's students
headline as leaders in the near future.

Eight of our participants attended a digital entrepreneurship Olivier Laouchez and
at Creddiple Studios. Black rose Factory
Founder, Sive Nkukhwana
This workshop was made possible through our ever-growing
partnership with Alliance Francaise.
The participants were exposed to some of the big names in
the digital entrepreneurship world. The two-day workshop
aimed to inspire participants to go into entrepreneurship in the
digital world with the 4th industrial revolution in the horizon.
Among the speakers were the co-founder of Trace channel.
The computer centre has new
classrooms
The centre moved to new premises on the site in May.
We love our new space and the ability to teach more
people due to the increase in the size of the rooms.
Our second intake of students for the year are already
enjoying the new classrooms and using the office
furniture generously donated by Ai Survelliance.
Proud of our computer alumni!
In May 2019, Kgomotso Mohlomi, a Computer Centre
alumni, graduated from the University of Johannesburg
(UJ) with a Higher Certificate in Business Management
Analysis and Project Management.
He called and informed us that this certification and
upward climb in the company (he obtained work with
Nandos through a partnership with Harambee and
worked his way up to management level) is directly as a
result of a spark that was ignited by Outreach
Foundation.
He said he attributes his success to Outreach
Foundation's intervention in his life.
We are very proud of Kgomotso! Well done!
Blockchain Technologies
15 Outreach Foundation participants attended a
Blockchain technologies workshop at IBM in
Sandton. They thoroughly enjoyed learning all
about this fascinating topic.
We are excited to note that there is a
partnership developing between Outreach
Foundation and IBM with regard to training and
workshops.
Thanks IBM for your support.

Royal Central School of Speech and Drama
In the 4th year of partnership with the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama, University of London, we
have had the most wonderful team of BA students and MA students engaging with the theatre and
Boitumelo projects. The theme for this year was Stories of Hillbrow – More than a Single Story, shifting
narratives of Hillbrow by placing young people and women at the centre of the storytelling.
A four-week process in performance-making and creating digital stories culminated in a celebration of the
work on the 15th June as part of South Africa's Youth Day commemorations. The event included an
extract from our inter-generational project, Sounds Like You and Me, a performance by our high school
drama groups, a panel conversation chaired by Mwenya B. Kabwe (a Johannesburg based, Zambian
theatre maker, lecturer and mother) where discussions centred around considering alternative narratives
of Hillbrow, music from our jazz and marimba bands as well as a dance performance by Skotisfontain.
Site-specific installations evocatively traced the process taken for this theme and honoured all the women
nominated. This year we have been working with MA students, Gabriel and Katie Yeo, and Vusi Thwala.
We explored digital storytelling as a means of celebrating alternative narratives of living and being in
Hillbrow. Entitled Extraordinary, Ordinary Women, we explored the role digital storytelling can play in
exploring forgotten histories of women and communities. A series of workshops were also held with
various groups at Outreach Foundation to get each participant to nominate their hero. A selection process
took place and four films were created.
This project was made possible with funding from Global Research Fund - a project in collaboration with G5
in Mumbai, India and will run for another two years.
Our partnership, initiated last year, with the Ward 21 Clinic at the Wits RHI Centre, built on a sharing of
practice and an exploration of young people’s health rights in Hillbrow. Theatre students from St Edna’s
Secondary School and Barnato Park High School, alongside BA students from Royal Central and in
collaboration with students from the Market Theatre Laboratory to interrogate ideas about what it means to
be a young person living in Hillbrow and how to enact your health rights.

Jan Celliers Concert
Over 20 years ago Carel De Graaff, founder and head of the Outreach Foundation Music Centre met with
Lientjie Grief, Department Head of Music, Jan Celliers Primary School to fundraise for the music centre.
Lientjie then initiated the inter-school concert to fundraise for the centre and this year on the 11th June
celebrated the 20th anniversary of this generous initiative. We received over R5,600.00 and a new drum kit
from the evening of music and food.
A huge thank you to Lientjie and Jan Celliers for their continued support and love.
