A number of great events and things have been
happening at Outreach Foundation over the past
months. Enjoy our bumper edition covering the past few
months
We've just celebrated Heritage Day in South Africa
Heritage Day is a South African public holiday celebrated on 24 September.
On this day, South Africans are encouraged to celebrate their culture and the
diversity of their beliefs and traditions, in the wider context of a nation that
belongs to all its people.
We hope all our staff and participants enjoyed their
day and celebrated their cultures.
Every School and learner that took part in the festival is a winner!
We've just finished iteration 2 of the 15th Inner-
City High Schools Drama Festival
Masibamane College, Rand Tutorial College,
Alexandra High School, Selelekela Secondary,
Alpha Tutorial, Sandringham High School, and
Our Lady of Wisdom High School.High School,
and Our Lady of Wisdom High School were
unable to take part in the festival earlier this month
due to the outbreak of violence in the inner-city of
Johannesburg.
We gave them the opportunity to present the plays they worked so hard on, it
was great to see what they came up with. Well done everyone!
The 15th Inner-City High Schools Drama Festival
A huge congratulations to all those who competed in the 15th Inner-City High
Schools Drama Festival during the first two weeks in September.
The turnout was amazing and the performances were outstanding despite the
violence that broke out in the inner-city during this time resulting in us suspending
the festival for two days.
This programme was made possible through funding from City of Johannesburg –
Arts Alive Festival, Department of Arts and Culture, Rand Merchant Bank, Ford
Foundation, Bread for the World.
Our valued partners include the Market
Theatre Laboratory, GALA, Drama for
Life, Exclusive Books and Assitej South
Africa.

Spring day @ Workers Museum
Spring day was chilly but that didn't stop Outreach Foundation's Boitumelo.
We spent the day at the Workers Museum for the Jozi Book Fair.
We weaved stories and knitted. Thanks to Hope Mwenda and Matsidiso
Masilo who was there too. In addition to all we did normally, we also taught
a most enthusiastic school Principle from Pretoria how to weave.
During August
Preparations for the Inner-City High School Drama
Festival
Naledzani Matshinge held several workshops over a
number of Saturdays in August with the cast of the
Barnato Park High School Theatre Group to make their
costumes for the Inner City High School Festival. The
cast learnt how to tie-dye, make various colours and
designs, tie the fabric and wash and iron the items
before the fabric could be used to make the costumes.
The process takes a lot of time and dedication. But
everyone enjoyed learning these new skills.
Women's Day Event
On Friday the 9th of August, a group of phenomenal woman came
together to discuss and empower themselves through speeches and
discussions. Topics discussed included:
Relationship Challenges; Transparency; Love and Faith;
Business; and Leadership.
Book Club
Every Saturday our primary school participants come together to read, make
books and tell stories. With Nomalizo Xabana and her team of volunteers, as
. well as parents who are also invited to attend, children are encouraged to read
out aloud and to each other. This adds to their confidence and increases their
vocabulary.
The finding your ‘hero in your home’ theme we had, helped everyone to see the
value of family. The books were made from recycled paper in the size of A6.
Part of the learning was to take an A3 paper and fold it in half to make A4, then
fold in half again to make A5 and then fold in half to get an A6 size paper. We
used coloured paper as the outside cover and masking tape to bind the books.
Join us every Saturday as we do more fun and educational things at Book Club.
Coloured Cube
A team of interns and participants from Boitumelo attended a workshop at The
Coloured Cube to learn more about 3-D printing. Musa Radebe, Lesley
Mosweu, Nonsikeleo Dhlomo, Sibusiso Ndlovu and Hope Mwenda joined the
workshop.
Their awareness and learning included the fact that the impossible is possible
and whilst we are all aware of the fact that we are in the 4th Industrial
Revolution, it is still not a reality in many people’s lives. The possibility of
producing a once-off product, is in stark contrast to our understanding of mass
production from the last century. Quite a shift in mindset.
As South Africans we are certainly in the forefront of embracing this new
technology, but it is costly.
Unfortunately we were unable to print our creations in 3D as there was an
electricity failure in the area. Maybe next time!
Creating bags for clients
At the training centre at Boitumelo we have been busy producing 1000 bags for
Khanya College. They are hosting their yearly Jozi Book Fair at Newtown from
the 29th August – 1st September. We also received and order for 50 bags for
the ELM Bazaar which Mary Mawela and her team are working very hard on.

1st Inner City High School Marimba Festival
This year we launched a high schools marimba programme facilitated by
Themba Moyo, Barnato Park, Phoenix College, Centurion College and individual
learners from St Enda’s High School and our Lady of Wisdom School joined the
programme in February 2019. On the 20th July we launched the 1st Inner-City
High Schools Marimba Festival. Directed by Themba Moyo, it aims to provide a
platform to showcase the learner's ew skills and to celebrate the young players’
commitment and passion.
The high school bands were joined by invited guests who have been taught by
Themeba over the years. Thank you to Kingsway Christian School, Friendly
Drummers, Inkwalambula Ink & Fresh Crew and a special thank you to Abafazi
be Ngoma who lead us in a moving finale as we all paid tribute to the late Johnny
Clegg. The festival is not a competition, but we were privileged to have Yonah
Zhoya, Moreetsi Maphala, Bekezela Nkomo join us and give feedback to the
learners and of course, to inspire the children.
The festival was beautifully led by two theatre alumni, MC’s Lesley Mosweu and
Kholefolo Babzi and we were also joined by one of our more famous alumni,
Aljoy Chick.
Thanks to all the volunteers in the kitchen, front of house, backstage and in the
theatre and a special thanks to Virginia Pilane!
