Workshops began in May 2019

Threadways like Roadways

During late April we were invited to Machadodorp, Emakhazeni, where we
joined up with four of The Forgotten Theatre Angle Collaborative Interns to
develop a story, a journey that speaks to what is freedom.

Hope Mwenda setting up a game based on "river river" using the words
free/freedom.

Participants from various schools weaving words of freedom and the
meaning to be free on a fence.

Over three days in Machadodorp, the group used craft to open up
discussions around refugees, migrants, resentments and anger.
They used the land to change the colour of white cloths, embroidered on
fences and weaved on gates.

Odia Kanyinda at the gate of the
school that she weaved all the

stories from Bienvenue and
Boitumelo together.

Our journey to Mpumalanga was great.

We also met with artists and enjoyed different
kinds of performances which took place at
Milly's for the opening festival.

The rest of the performances took place in a
variety of areas of Machadodorp.

All in all it was a great experience, a privilege
and honor to be part of a team that performed
and worked together.

Performing Arts Project
Everything Must Fall

Over 220 high school learners from Our Lady of Wisdom, Phoenix College,
Alpha Tutorial College and Providence Academy attended a screening of
Everything Must Fall directed by Rehad Desai.

“It is a story of hope, disappointment, anger and a new generation that has
entered our political arena. It is the story of Fees Must Fall told through the
prism of Wits University, my old university, one of the country’s elite
universities, adding some unique layers of complexity.” – Rehad Desai.

Palesa Setsubi, a student from University of Johannesburg, facilitated a post-
screening discussion with Anita Khanna, one of the producers of the film.

Thank you to Anita, Khanna, Margherita Di Paola and Thabang Phakathi for
organising this powerful and inspiring event.

Phana Dube, lighting designer; Lesley Mosweu, FirstRand Foundation intern;
Hope Mwenda a volunteer; as well as mentor, Gcebile Dlamini, attended a
three-day workshop at the University of Johannesburg.

The group left the UJ Tech Bootcamp inspired and more knowledgeable on
the art of stage management, lighting and sound design. Thank you Jade
Bowers for the invite.

The workshop was great and covered the fundamentals of lighting and usage
of angles in rigging and setting up of the lights.

"I found that it was inspiring to the participants that I brought to the workshop.
They began to understand the value of the stage manager and his/her duties.

We all found it hugely helpful." ~ Phana Dube.

Singing Workshops - Inner Voice

A select group of participants from our choir attended a workshop with Scottish
Operatic Tenor, Chris Elliot in mid-April at the Derrick Lewis Choral Room,
WITS Education Campus.

The workshop was aimed at inspiring the children (aged between 10-14) to
discover their inner-voice and/or to find the possibility of a new voice within
themselves. Its aims to help them explore how they can express themselves
vocally, explore the physical, physiological and emotional connection to their
voice and how this can promote well-being and enhance confidence and
communication.

Thank you to Ismail Mahomed for connecting us with Partners for Possibility,
and Symphonia who organised the workshops.

Vuyani Dance documentary

On Friday 10th May the cast of Sounds Like You and Me watched a
screening of Beautiful Me by Gregory Maqoma at the Hillbrow Theatre.

The following day Gregory and the film crew joined the cast for a
conversation and question answer/session on the work. The Sunday
following that saw the cast of Sounds Like You and Me and some members
from Hillbrowfication cast watch Exit/Exist by Gregory at the Market Theatre.
Another filmed conversation with some of the participants and Gcebile
Dlamini took place after the show.

The Outreach Foundation is grateful to be part of the Vuyani Dance Theatre
outreach programme. Thank you to Gregory Maqoma and Vuyani Dance
Theatre for inviting us to be part of a documentary project,
https://www.joydancerdocumentary.net/about-1.

"I was pleased to see many young people attending the performance of
Exit/Exist at the Market Theatre on Sunday. They even stayed to ask questions.
Their curiosity and love for the arts is evident. Thanks to Outreach Foundation’s

Hillbrow Theatre Project." ~ Gregory Maqoma heading

Joburg Photowalkers meet Hillbrow
and the Outreach Foundation

A huge thank you to Mark Straw who organised a visit to the Outreach
Foundation for the Joburg Photowalkers as part of their Joburg A-Z tours.

Over 27 photographers joined Lesley Mosweu, FirstRand intern and Meeting
Hillbrow Tour coordinator, on a tour of Hillbrow at the end of April.

We received a wonderful selection of images of Outreach Foundation activities
and Hillbrow following this successful tour.

Drum kit donation

Ayn Brown, one of the Joburg Photowalkers,
got talking to Quinton Mamabolo, facilitator of
the primary school marimba band, and
decided to donate a drum kit to the Outreach
Foundation.

It is already being used in preparation for our
participation in the International Marimba and
Steelpan Festival in July.

It can also be seen on the Hillbrow stage for
rehearsal for Sounds Like You and Me for the
trip to the National Arts Festival in June.

Thank you to Ayn Brown!

Furniture
donation

A big thank you to Rob Nichol
from AI Surveillance for the
generous donation of office
desks, chairs and dividers.

The new Computer class is
ready for the new intake!

Help us go to Grahamstown

Support an inter-generational cast from Hillbrow, Johannesburg, in their
collective dream to take this year's theatrical show to the National Arts Festival
in Grahamstown in July.

The group ranging in age from 10 to 82 are in their third year of partnership,
and are committed to values of inclusivity & expression.

The production opens up exploration into the role of memory, of our pasts and
what “came before” that shapes our identities.

Support us by donating via Thundafund. We are 51% closer to reaching
our goal. Go to https://thundafund.com/project/soundslikeyouandm to
donate.

A huge thank you to all who
have already supported the

cast!
