52 LIFE POSITIVE MARCH 2017 Where we look affects how we feel," I was told when I was introduced to Brainspotting. I was immediately curious. And my mind was making the connection. When I am explaining a concept that I am still grappling with, my eyes move and then hold still about 10 inches above a person’s face. I am looking at the concept. When my nephew talks about his fear of not getting the work he wants, he looks fixedly at his hands and is then able to dig deep into his fear. A colleague told me his aunt would turn her head gently to the left and look at a dot on the wall whenever the Mind healing Brainspotting is a revolutionary healing and therapy tool that greatly benefits those suffering from trauma and emotional wounds, says Anita Vasudeva Where we look affects how we feel conversation turned to violence against women. She was a survivor. Were these brainspots? Are these fixed positions that our eyes hold on to as the brain works through a challenge, a fear, a trauma, an anxiety? If so, how does it help us to know that? How does it help to make my nephew, or my colleagues, feel better? Chronic anxieties and deep traumas need the intervention of professionals. However, those who suffer often shy away from treatment, anticipating prolonged and expensive sessions which may last years. A new therapy Brainpotting (BSP), a revolutionary healing therapy, can resolve this impasse. New to India, BSP is being Photo: Thinkstock
LIFE POSITIVE MARCH 2017 53 How it works The idea of an eye position is really quite unique, as is finding the spots. Anger and sadness are so close to each other. When a brainspot is stimulated, the deep brain appears to reflexively signal the therapist that the source of the problem has been found. With focus and precision – like a laser beam - the brainspot where you hold the trauma can be found, which then allows the brain to process through the trauma in a way that cannot be done through talking. Our brain knows how to do this on its own. BSP can also therefore be used to find and strengthen our natural resources and resilience. In addition to an activation model, it is also a resource model, where we feel more grounded, calm and resilient. “….you find a brainspot for the grounded-ness – a groundspot, and then process the trauma from that,” says Dr Rancke. “I was sceptical at first,” she adds, “but I have learned from experience that you can make miracles for some people with BSP. Even people who have been raped or mugged…they have recovered so fast...” Not just deep trauma, BSP works well in the treatment of people with a range of issues _ medical, physical and psycho-emotional. From relationships and professional performance anxiety, deep worries and fears to creativity enhancement, BSP is a valuable resource. Both Dr Grand and Dr Rancke, as well as other practitioners, have seen great breakthroughs using this revolutionary tool. They also say it works really well with children since they are the most open and haven’t yet completely developed. It can be used by over 8,000 trained therapists across 30 countries. Professionals have been using it to successfully address and resolve trauma and many other issues. It is increasingly gaining world-wide renown as a powerful and effective method to help people. Apart from the uniqueness of its approach, the goal of BSP, its founder, Dr Grand affirms, is change; change that is rapid, immediate, deep and permanent. The basic model, he believes, is ideally two sessions – to experience, resolve and review. Of course depending on the person and the issue, the therapy takes its own time, but is far quicker than others. I hadn’t heard of Brainspotting being used in India by therapists, mental health professionals, healers or coaches. My colleague, who met Dr David Grand in the US, was enthused and eager to introduce the theory and practice in India. So was I when I heard more. We knew this would be of value to both helping professionals and people who turned to them for help. So, what exactly is Brainspotting? Brainspotting was discovered and developed in 2003 by Dr David Grand, PhD., a master EMDR facilitator and ‘one of the most important and effective psychological trauma therapists now practising.’ EMDR is an integrative psychotherapy approach that is used for the treatment of trauma. Its very name - Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) – demonstrates its focus: the movement of the eyes. Dr Grand found that, unlike eye movements, stationary eye positions – when the eye holds still and fixes itself on a particular location – create a direct connection to the neural networks in our brain that carry specific trauma. He discovered that “where his clients look actually affects how they feel.” Through the process that he developed, Dr Grand could help clients identify, process and release core neuro-physiological sources of emotional/physical pain, trauma, dissociation and other symptoms. Self-healing Our bodies have a natural self-scanning, self-healing ability. Brainspotting harnesses this ability. It is able to bypass the neo-cortex and get to the deeper, more emotional responses of the sub-cortex. Dr. Grand says, “It is the brain’s activity, especially the deeper brain, the sub-cortical brain that organises itself around the eye position.” I spoke to Dr Christine Rancke, PhD., one of the earliest practitioners of Brainspotting to learn more. A colleague of Dr Grand, she was sharing an office with him in 2003 and started using the tool almost as soon as he developed it. “I am a psychoanalyst; when I learned BSP and found it works faster and more effectively than traditional therapy, I switched my talk therapy clients to BSP. Talk therapy helps, but sometimes it doesn’t get to the reptilian brain.” Brainspotting supports the therapy relationship and is referred to as one of the power therapies. Dr Christine Rancke found an effective tool in brainspotting
54 LIFE POSITIVE MARCH 2017 also used with couples or in groups. “There’s not a single issue that cannot be addressed with Brainspotting,” says Dr Rancke. A very deep process, where the patient stays focused on the brainspot, can be very gentle and very relaxing, even though usually there’s a lot going on in the mid-brain. There is no language there; only emotion and images and memory. There are times when it is not necessary to talk at all. The BSP philosophy is unique. The mindfulness of the process is important. It is dependent on very powerful attunement – staying in tune with the client and paying close attention to their physiology and their neuro-biology. It is about following the client and the system. “The system will work if you get out of the way. As therapists we are trained to be the experts and see the themes. In the BSP philosophy, the client is the expert… we are quiet and do not lead the client. The process goes exactly as it is meant to. Keeping quiet is a difficult thing for psychoanalysts to do! Here it is all about WAIT - Why Am I Talking?” says Dr Rancke. But what about professionals who already work successfully with other methods? BSP can help a therapist by providing tools for quick healing that they don’t already have. Brainspotting can be the primary tool used by helping professionals or it could be integrated easily to complement various bodybased therapies including advanced bodywork, chiropractic, acupuncture, somatic therapies, physical therapy, nursing, medicine, and other specialised approaches to physical healing. There is a tremendous amount of research that has been done and continues to be done around Brainspotting. It has proven to be a highly effective treatment for trauma and other issues, and is fast becoming the most sought-after treatment for resolution of trauma as well as positive performance enhancement. Some of you may remember the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut, USA, in December 2012, when a 20-year-old man fatally shot 20 children and six adults. After the event, the community engaged many therapists to attend to the brain health and well-being needs of the residents. The Community Foundation conducted a survey to get a better understanding of the effectiveness of various types of therapeutic interventions for themselves. 59.09 per cent of the respondents felt that BSP had been very effective, far more than all the other therapies. From the first moment of discovery to becoming an international phenomenon, BSP has spread like wildfire. People are recognising the validity of this technique. The first BSP conference was held in Rio; there is a large BSP Institute in Brazil, one in Germany, and three in the US. David Grand travels across the globe – “My goal for BSP – in whatever time – is to inspire a therapist anywhere in the world – to discover something breakthrough – beyond BSP.” There are 30 BSP trainers in the world. The seniormost amongst them, Dr Christine Rancke, based in New York, will arrive in India to introduce BSP in March 2017 and conduct certification trainings in Delhi and Mumbai. "David Grand(’s)…. development of Brainspotting is a very important leap forward in helping people resolve trauma. Brainspotting is a remarkable, sophisticated, flexible addition to the therapeutic toolkit of any psychotherapist. I know because I use it regularly and find that, combined with the psychoanalytic approaches I normally practice, the results are astonishingly helpful. Using it, one becomes amazed at the extent to which our traumas can be detected in our ordinary facial and eye reflexes and how, by using these windows to inner mental states, many traumas and symptoms can be rapidly relieved…." concludes Norman Doidge, MD. FRCPC, author of The Brain That Changes Itself. Considering the extent of the suffering psychological ailments can have on the victim and the family, any therapy that can heal rapidly should at least be explored. The word itself fills us with a sparkling sense of joy and curiosity. A realm we left behind in c h i l d h o o d along with fairy tales, to face the practical world of ground realities is today reclaiming our attention. The mystical world of angels exists, eager to touch our lives with their magic wands if only we would allow them to. And through Roshani Shenazz Nadirshah, an emissary par excellence of the angelic forces, we can learn how to. A connection with angels fills our life with faith, hope and courage, and also acts as our portal to higher dimensions of being and living. Says Roshani, “Angels are non-religious, non-denominational light beings, who were created by God way before creation came into existence and are there for the benefit of College, New Delhi, and M.D. in chest specialisation from the Patel Chest Institute, Delhi. From his youth he had been driven by a quest to know. He read the Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda in his youth and was deeply impressed. On reading about the God-realised saints in the book he felt the desire to reach that state himself. He subscribed to the postal course of kriya yoga meditation and began doing meditation daily twice a day. As he practised he began seeing great changes within himself. One of the landmark moments in his spiritual journey was the day he realised the meaning of God's omnipresence. “It struck me that if God was everywhere, then He was right here with me in the room itself. There was no place to go to find him,” he says. In 1988 he joined the YSS ashram as a monk and served in the ashram in different capacities. He was involved in many charitable activities, such as eye camps, free TB clinic, and treatment of leprosy patients in his first 10 years of ashram life. Later, he was sent to the Self-Realization Fellowship, the International headquarters of Yogoda Satsanga Society of India in Los Angeles, where he spent about five years. In spreading the life-affirmative teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda, he has travelled all over India and abroad, and spoken in several American cities such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle, New York, and Atlanta. He will be delivering the inaugural address at the festival on the subject: Balancing between the head and heart. Valedictory address by Dr Sriram Gajula If humility is the measure of greatness, then Dr Sriram Gajula aces this test. He is the epitome of simplicity, grace, love, and gentleness. His speeches are the outpourings of his heart, the most deep and authentic realisations which are a result of his consistent spiritual inquiries and profound love for Nature. Listening to him is akin to taking a dip in the pool of your soul. You return feeling as though you have just met yourself more deeply.
LIFE POSITIVE MARCH 2017 61 the inhabited universe irrespective of our earthly religions and other differences.” In this one-day workshop you will learn about your guiding angels, arch angels, how to invoke them and decode their messages. Keynote speaker, best-selling author of Angelspeak, spiritual mentor and coach and founder of Sparkling Angels Wholeistic Living and Holistic Healing Meher Roshani Foundation, Roshani is in the second innings of her inspirational life. Her dynamic 23 years in media and films, where she worked for some of the biggest names in the industry was interrupted in 2005 by a prolonged illness followed by financial, emotional and many other closures. After a radical transformation in 2009-10, she quit the dream industry, embarking on her life purpose to help people unveil their own divine potential. She learnt Angel healing with Charles Virtue, son of Doreen Virtue in 2010, and has ever since been facilitating many sessions and workshops for guidance, healing and mentoring in India and across the globe. She was invited as a Keynote Speaker at the XIVth CIFA forum in Monaco, France in 2016. The Secrets of Breath by Partha Gupta Our breath is not simply oxygen but also prana, the element of life and divinity in our lives. As long as we can take c o m p l e t e breaths, uncluttered by dist u r b i n g thoughts and emotions, we can lead healthy, spirited and energetic lives. Our breath manifests our dreams, desires or even what we fear, depending on its quality. So if we could simply learn to breathe in the best possible way, many of our challenges would get over. Says Partha, “Whatever is coming to you is because of the breath. Whatever is going out of you is because of the breath. Till date whatever you have received is because your breath could connect to it. And if you have wanted something and did not receive it, it is because your breath could not connect to it.” His session focuses on making participants experience the vitality of prana. His breathing techniques have the power to fill you up with unprecedented vitality, heal your chronic diseases, manifest your dreams, and even take you closer to your Divine self. It is a delight to watch participants perform nadi shuddhi – a chakra-cleansing breathing technique – under Partha’s guidance and feel liberated of their blockages. His affable and easygoing demeanour puts everyone at ease. Partha is a Hyderabad-based master breath trainer, who learnt the processes of life from the great Himalayan Masters, and the kriya yoga tradition of Shibendu Lahiri, great grandson of Lahiri Mahashaya. He has empowered many to heal ailments and manifest their intentions by connecting to their breath. “Participating in the Pranic Force workshop by Partha Gupta in Coimbatore gave me a good tool to change my lifestyle. I have learnt to live a happy and better life, thanks to the session,” said PL Garg, a participant from Faridabad. Another participant, D Surekha, too found the workshop to be excellent. “I learnt a lot of breath techniques which removed many energy blockages. I found each and every second of the session to be very special, and had an amazing experience,” she said. Processing trapped emotions by Suzy Singh Deep emotions have a way of impacting our mind and memory. If unpleasant they can take deep roots in our psyche, badly affecting or influencing our present life and relationships. They become sanskaras which can continue to exert themselves even in forthcoming lives, becoming our dysfunctional patterns. If unhealed or unreleased they can also convert into debilitating diseases. Magically, our real, magnificent Self lies just beneath the surface of these pernicious emotions. Once you are able to identify them you can work to help them find release. And as you do so you will move towards your real nature of bliss, peace and joy. In this workshop, Suzy will teach you how to identify, process and release trapped emotions for a happier and healthier life. A regular writer for Life Positive (see article on Page 64), Suzy Singh is a transpersonal therapist, karma coach, relationship counsellor and energy healer. She has extensive clinical experience in multidisciplinary approaches to vibrational healing and energy medicine. She has helped innumerable people across the globe find greater happiness, more peace, better health and enhanced productivity. Her book on karma and fulfillment is due for release by this year end by Life Positive Books. Her journey through the world of consciousness included a fatal car
62 LIFE POSITIVE MARCH 2017 crash. Says Suzy, “I had been using spirituality to get back to God, but my fierce accident made me realise that I had to belong to the people of the earth, sharing with them and teaching them what I had learnt. I heard God say to me, “If I had wanted you to remain here with me, I wouldn’t have sent you down there to complete your work. Accomplish your purpose, finish what you have been assigned, be brave, learn, conquer your infirmities, and find me there itself on earth,” Ever since Suzy has been diligently on this path. Acupressure for total wellness by Ketan Shah Says Ketan V Shah, “It’s time to feel the body and heal the mind!” Ketan Shah is a messiah of acupressure, known across the globe for treating and curing people of many diseases. And it’s all in your own hands. A pressure here, a stress there, and hey presto, you are up and about, trotting back to work. Acupressure is so effective that many diseases that are beyond diagnosis or cure can also be managed or completely healed. Jamuna Rangachari, editor, Life Positive website, swears by the efficacy of acupressure. Jamuna managed her multiple sclerosis mainly through the use of acupuncture as well as acupressure. Mr Shah himself recovered from a botched-up appendix operation with the help of acupressure. The surgery was not successful, and he further developed gangrene. Fortunately, he happened to meet Dr Bhojraj, an acupressure specialist who taught him the techniques. Within a month he was cured of the disease completely. A miracle that compelled him to devote his life to the propagation of acupressure. Says he, “Disease is one of our worst enemies. Not only do people suffer physically and emotionally, but also financially due to the high cost of treatments they are forced to undertake.” His success with acupressure made him learn it professionally along with reiki and other alternative therapies. After that he embarked on a journey to empower more and more people to become self-sufficient with regard to their health. Ketan Shah has held workshops across various countries like India, Australia, United Kingdom, USA, Kenya and Tanzania. He has also invested time in treating over 3,000 inmates and trained over a 100 male and female inmates of the famous Tihar Jail in New Delhi, who, in turn, are helping fellow inmates regularly. He has held workshops for CISF jawans who manage the security at the airports in India. In order to spread awareness of acupressure and its benefits, Mr. Shah conducts “wellness camps” across various cities and towns of India like Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Akola, Haridwar, Madurai and parts of East Africa. He has trained about 100 volunteers in a town called Udang, in Howrah district, West Bengal, who have successfully treated more than 15,000 patients till date. He is the author of the bestselling book, Acupressure for Total Wellness. Mind and health management by BK Chandrasekhar Your mind is a powerhouse of s u p e r h u m a n abilities but will not work for you unless you learn to harness its powers. Dr Chandrashekhar gives you a glimpse of his own obedient mind by memorising and reciting a range of phone numbers after giving them a cursory glance. He also used the power of his mind to heal himself of diseases like cancer and hepatitis. And he is confident that each one of us can do the same. His methods are simple and easy to practice. After his workshop, people make a beeline at his stall, clamouring for his books and handouts. He says, “According to God, an atheist is not someone who does not believe in Him, but someone who misuses his energy. And a theist is someone who uses God’s energy positively. Therefore, even if you pray four times a day you are a theist only if you make just use of your abilities and powers. Thus, only a handful can be called believers. Through the techniques imparted to me by God, I teach you how best to use the powers endowed on you by God Himself.” Crediting the Divine for all his innovative techniques, Dr BK Chandrashekhar is a Raj yogi, a Psycho-Neurobics specialist, and founder of SIGFA solutions. He is an international mind and memory trainer, Guinness World Record Holder in speech category, Director of the Indian Forum of Yoga and Samskrutham University, Florida, USA, and founder director of Invisible Doctors solutions. He has authored more than 15 books on mind, memory and healing power. He has conducted more than 4,000 workshops and seminars in India and abroad on memory

Past-life Regression by Blossom Furtado Sanskaras and memories don’t go away with death. They travel from lifetime to lifetime influencing our traits, habits and even thought processes, making us who we are in our present life. While positive sanskaras give us positive thoughts, habits and beliefs, a folder of unpleasant past-life memories can badly affect our current-life situations and relationships. Sometimes unsettled scores from past lives too may surface in our current life. To find answers to such recurring patterns and debilitating circumstances, a peek into our past life may be the best solution. People have healed from emotional blocks, spiritual wounds and physical ailments through undergoing Past-life Regression under a trained and competent therapist. Facilitator Blossom Furtado is a psychologist, an MD in alternative medicine (naturopathy and yoga) and a certified clinical hypnotherapist, past-life regression and transpersonal therapist. She is also a spirit release therapist, Theta Healer, energy balancing therapist, life between lives, crystal therapist, and spiritual therapist, counselor, teacher and trainer. She says, “The experience may have been incomplete and hence the soul chooses the current physical body to re-experience it, understand or have a new perception, release and be complete with the experience.” She is also the founder and president of AIKYA THE ONE, an organisation that offers workshops on selfempowerment to corporate organisations, schools, NGOs and other institutions. Blossom also founded The Hypnotherapy School of India which teaches hypnotherapy, regression and therapies related to past and future lives. 64 LIFE POSITIVE MARCH 2017 dark, negative feeling in you, like for example, greed, you need to practice acknowledging it without any judgement or reaction. Next, using self-talk and the wisdom mind, you can talk to both parts, acknowledging how their presence is useful because they serve you in some way, even though you may not be fully aware how. Simply acknowledging and honouring the negative feeling enrols its participation, and makes it more willing to listen to your suggestions. Now begin the negotiations. Through self-talk, greed is told that it is a valuable contributor in fuelling your ambition, making you work harder and perhaps even smarter, but for greed to be meaningful it must comply with the terms and conditions you set for it. Yes, you love making money, buying good things, travelling, and affording luxuries, but you also consciously choose not to cheat others or employ illegal means to get rich. This softens greed, making it more compliant and inclusive. Self-drive is happy to get a working partner who can step up its productivity and net worth, making its efforts more valuable in monetary terms. As a result of this dialogue with both your parts, you not only en-lighten and inform greed about your conscious choices, you also establish an ongoing partnership between one of the best in you (self-drive) and a previously disowned, rest in you (greed). Together, they make your vocational efforts more rewarding because the energy utilised in hiding greed and denying it, now becomes available to you and you can channelise that in finding creative ways of stepping up your productivity. By marrying your bittersweet parts, you become more whole than you were before, increasing your capacity to feel more enthusiastic about your work, and you also end up having more energy to engage and participate in activities that you didn't even think was possible before. We all tend to separate the best in us from the rest in us. What's good in us is favoured and nourished, while what's unacceptable is banished without a thought into the shadows, often projected onto the world as things we dislike, judge or label as bad, vociferously pronouncing 'that's just not me', or ' I would never do such a thing'. However this split stifles our creativity, creating self-imposed limitations that make us feel that we are not fulfilling our potential. The emptiness or void that this creates then seeks to fill itself with other things and other people so we can, at least momentarily, feel good about ourselves. This is what causes us to mindlessly engage in texting, gossiping, television watching, drinking, smoking, jumping from one relationship to another and constantly escaping. But the only way to truly fill this void, to become whole, is by marrying both the cherished and the banished aspects of ourselves. How can one do this? Well, let's say you have great drive and ambition to succeed. Now this self-drive is obviously a virtue you are quite happy to own because it reflects a desire to improve your current state. Others not only approve of this virtue, they probably even envy it. But what you may be unconsciously denying, is that there is a parallel presence of greed, an insatiable hunger to make quick money, or to have more worldly possessions. Marrying these two, the best and the denied rest, involves at first, recognition of the fact that both these opposites, the good, and the not-so-good feelings, exist in you. This is the most challenging aspect. A deep desire to know the truth about your true self and the underlying motivations for why you do what you do, coupled with the practice of regular reflection and self-awareness, may be sufficient to bring out the dark disowned aspect from hiding. Once you identify that there exists some Embracing the shadow We can only become integrated beings when we accept all parts of ourselves, including those that we are ashamed or afraid of, says Suzy Singh Mind healing To read these articles online and post your comments, go to http://www.lifepositive.com/Magazine/Mar2017. 66 LIFE POSITIVE MARCH 2017 You've been searching, looking for answers, trying to understand life, perhaps the meaning of it, the why of it. Or perhaps the meaning of your particular situation, your challenges. Why did this happen to me? Or why did that not happen to me? The search carries you to temple, church, books, gurus, scriptures, meditation, workshops, seminars, satsang. Does anything change? Do the circumstances ease? Did you get the answers? What changed? I had this question. I did a lot of the above for many years. So what changed? Did life get easier? Did I get all that I wanted? Was it at all about getting what I wanted? Was it about happiness? What is happiness? Spirit Shift A constant search for answers to the mystery of life led Maninder Cheema to some insightful and highly valuable lessons Life lessons Decoding life I used to be unhappy about my job. It was comfortable, but not exciting. Almost like a pension. This confused me. How could I be unhappy about a comfortable, secure and reasonably well-paying job? I tried to quit, change. I got a job offer. And then I chickened out at the last minute. I debated whether twice the current income would make me happier. Was it just about money? I gave up the offer. Shortly, the old job became more interesting. I was happy, the work became interesting, even exciting. I went through this turmoil, this upheaval in my emotions, about my job. The lesson I learned from this cycle of emotions was of patience. It’s an ongoing learning. But another question that confronted me was when does patience turn into passivity and inaction? How to balance between waiting and taking action? Where does the spiritual search help in all this? Have I truly become more patient? Photo: Thinkstock
LIFE POSITIVE MARCH 2017 67 service, it comes across as apathy towards the public. There is numbing of sensitivity, first towards oneself and then towards others. Numbness was my first challenge as a seeker. I could feel neither joy nor sadness. I was numb. It's a defence against pain. A lot of work went into defrosting myself. Our culture values numbness. And though self-control is a virtue, numbness is not. The two get mixed up. Self-control happens when you are alive to an emotion and are able to transcend it. Numbness happens when you lose awareness of the emotion, but the emotion is very much present. The space within Numbness can generate passivity, cruelty, self-destruction, depression and so on. It is the mask behind which a volcano builds up. As the numbness loosens, passivity reduces. It becomes clearer when to act and when to wait. Whether to act and when to act are questions which have bothered me a lot, considering my tendency to rebel. In my very first job, I felt that my employer was not paying proper attention to his duties. Not having the courage to tell him With whatever spiritual practice I have engaged in over the years, I am quicker to anger. It comes up like a wave, I see myself helplessly in its grip and then it just passes and disappears. Sometimes it helps to be in the gym when I am angry. The energy dissipates faster. The good thing is that anger does not simmer below the surface, waiting to explode. It just comes up and within a couple of hours it starts to dissipate. The other good thing is that I am aware that I have been gripped by this emotion. Am I patient when angry? No. Am I patient when it has passed? Yes. Unexpressed feelings convert to passivity I work in an organisation of about 700 people. You get to observe people in such a workplace. What strikes me a lot about people at work is passivity. Humans are naturally sensitive. They react to situations and circumstances. They feel elation and frustration in equal measure. But at work, the emotions seem carefully hidden. Emotions are energy. If they arise and are not expressed, they will transform into some other shape. Unexpressed emotions are the most common cause of illness. At work, unexpressed emotions transform into a curious passivity. Large organisations become insensitive. A disconnect happens between emotions and work. The worker, disconnected from his own emotion, cannot connect to the emotion of who he is serving. In government
68 LIFE POSITIVE MARCH 2017 on his face, I wrote it all down and handed him a letter to read. In my view I was acting to right a wrong. The result was a termination letter on my desk the next day. This was very confusing for me. I did not understand what I did wrong. I swallowed my pride, apologised, and the termination letter was withdrawn. I have faced similar situations since, where I felt something was wrong. It was a slow learning to act rather than react. Action comes from a clear space, reaction from a place of suppressed emotions. As you lose numbness, as you become free of the smouldering volcano inside, you learn to act rather than react. You come from a peaceful place, a surer space. You are not so caught up in the effect of your action, and are more interested in the action itself. Consequently, the results are better. Results mirror the space from which the action springs. If the action is coming from a violent space, results will reflect the violence. If the action comes from a peaceful place, the results are more positive. Watch the drama Life constantly throws situations at you. The first lesson is to act rather than react. The second lesson is a sense of perspective, an ability to stand back and see the drama of it all. The greatest learning has been the ability to appreciate the drama of life. When something dramatic happens with anyone, they often use the expression “It was just like in the movies.” To be part of a movie-like situation seems to be the highest thrill people enjoy. And people enjoy all types of movies – sad, tragic, horror, action, comedy, romcoms. People enjoy anything which moves them deeply. And life moves us deeply. Life is far more dramatic than any story or movie. If I stand back a little, I notice the drama of life, and the drama of my life. Here I am in the grip of pure jealousy, and there I am feeling compassion. Here I am crestfallen, not knowing what to do next, and there I am hopeful and confident of the next step. It changes day-to-day. The more I see the drama of it, the more it allows me to experience fully whatever I am going through. This is what my search for truth gave me, the understanding that life is about experiencing fully whatever is before me, not resisting it, not fighting it, but surrendering to the drama of the present moment. Our mythology tells us that you cannot experience drama in heaven. There you can experience only bliss and that gets bland after some time. So you come here for the drama of it. Then why run away from the drama? You realise that at some level since you have yourself created all the drama in your life you might as well experience it fully. Grace cushions Does spiritual pursuit help in other ways? Does it help materially? What is the relationship between spiritual evolution and prayer? I remember asking this question to a learned guru. The answer again is perspective. The ability to see the larger picture, the ability to appreciate the workings of the universe. I might want a particular outcome, but if it is not in my best interest, it may not materialise. Something completely different may happen. Tragedy happens. Someone I know lost a baby. Someone else was implicated falsely in a case. Another person lost a grown son. My mum fell and broke her hip. The guru who I asked this question to said there is protection. Those who align themselves with Truth don’t stop facing tragedy, but there is protection. If you look When karma causes us to stumble and fall, grace holds out a helping hand

Mail us at [email protected] carefully, you can see how the fall has been softened, how you have found the strength to carry on. Plus you are not so caught up in self-pity. Life happens. You understand the meaning of neither being too happy nor too sad. You understand that ultimately everything passes. It’s only a matter of time. You get lighter, even when it’s heavy. You don’t attach yourself to the pain, you can let it flow away. You can reach your deepest essence, which is untouched by the external world. We are one There are two other lessons which are immensely helpful. You never really lose anyone. You can connect with their essence anytime. The physical presence may not be there, but their essence is always reachable. And you can never really hate anyone because each person is a reflection of yourself. Each person is created from the same source and is just playing out a certain role. I try to remember that every person does the best he or she can for himself in a given situation. These two lessons are not easy. I have been upset by as small a thing as my plant dying. Today I found someone had broken a beautiful flourishing plant into two, rent it at the stem. There was an immediate impact on my energy. It felt pulled down, off. But an hour later, I was back to normal. Whoever did it must have had his compulsions. I was able to let it go. Bigger things are more difficult to let go of. But I have found I cannot move on unless I let go. If I hold on to a bad thing, I get stuck with it, in the past. The quicker I accept and let go, the easier life is for me, the lesser I simmer in the pot of anger and resentment, or grief and sadness. Fulfillment and acceptance The one thing I find hard to assimilate in my spiritual journey is the use of spiritual teachings to fulfill your desires of fame, wealth, success, family, or progeny. A lot of these desires may be fulfilled in the natural course, but in every human being's life there is one or the other area where they struggle. Someone cannot have children, someone has an unhappy family life, someone cannot find a partner, someone is not succeeding in business or career. I am reminded of two stories from Sikh tradition that I heard in my youth. There was an old woman who was not able to have children. She was advised to seek from the 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. He told her children were not in her destiny. As advised to her by other disciples, she responded by saying, “You are the writer of destinies. Please write it if it’s not in my destiny.” With this she handed him a paper and pen. Moved by her devotion, he took the paper. As he was writing 1, his horse moved and it became a 7. She went on to have seven sons. Her desire was fulfilled by virtue of her devotion. In the other story, there was a deeply pious man who was said to be enlightened. On the wedding day of his son, he was seen stitching together sheets for people to sit. Someone asked him what he was doing. He responded, “After the wedding, my son is going to die. I am preparing sheets for people to sit for the mourning.” This story always shocks me by the degree of acceptance and surrender depicted and the total absence of desire for a different outcome. I suppose desire is what makes creation perpetuate itself and humans will continue to be moved by desire. The second story belongs to the rare human who has let go of desire, of the ideal towards which spiritual striving takes us. Not received a copy of your favourite magazine? 70 LIFE POSITIVE MARCH 2017 Positive Focus Spirituality simplified Miracles of Hypnotherapy I magine a spiritual realm where people are moving about in two groups. The first group consists of people looking for solutions regarding health, wealth, relationships, while hankering for a great spiritual journey. And then there is another group made up of masters or awakened souls giving the required solutions to light searching souls. Who are these souls? Well, in simple terms, the awakened souls are a group more consciously empowered than the light searching souls. Dr Monica Nagpal Agnihotri is one such awakened and empowered soul, a divine source who has been helping a large number of healers and non-healers around the world. She is a gifted healer of international repute. Her tryst with life led her to explore spiritual and metaphysical concepts to redesign her life. She practices balance and harmony, and loves to share it with everyone around. Her deep compassion for humanity enabled her to develop a technique called Harmonic Life Therapy (HLT) for improving the quality of human life. This therapy is based on her extensive research of 15 years. According to Dr Agnihotri, Harmonic Life Therapy is simple, effective, easy to learn and easier to implement. It is being practised by people willing to improve the quality of their lives, and know the deepest secrets of universe, and are striving to achieve synchronization of the self with the truth and others. The one who is empowered through HLT becomes a torch bearer for empowering others. HLT is categorized into three levels: Mpowerment, Mpowering, and Mpowered. There are various healing tools and products of HLT which have the potential to help you awaken and take control of the steering of your life. “If you are unique, responsible and extraordinarily talented, this technique is for you. And, if you are not... this technique is for you!” says Neha Mittal, a HLT practitioner. HLT workshops are open for people of every age, for healers and nonhealers alike. For details, visit: www.thzthehealingzone.com With my past-life regression therapy and hypnotherapy clients, I often have to answer many questions on ‘karma.’ There are a whole lot of books and texts written on karma and the karmic connection of life, be it instant karma, karmas manifesting since our childhood or past life karmas. This is also one of my favourite subjects,” says Swasti S Sharma, Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist and Certified Past-Life Regression therapist from Hypnotherapy Academy of America. Comparing Geshe Kelsang Ghatso’s definition of karma _ for every action we perform, we experience a similar result, with that of her professor
LIFE POSITIVE MARCH 2017 71 from Hypnotherapy Academy of America, Swasti elaborates on a modified version of the same definition. “For every intentional action we perform, we experience a similar result.” With the emphasis on ‘intention’, we are actually taking responsibility for our actions and, eventually, for the results that we get out of those actions. Karmas, whether negative or positive, are created not just through actions, but also through words, emotions and thoughts; ‘thoughts’ being at the foundation level.” According to her, our emotions, and how we feel, are a result of dominant thoughts on our mind. We say what we think, so thoughts generate our words. And how we act and react during certain situations also depends on our thoughts about that situation. Thoughts come from the mind. So we must learn to control our mind to control our thoughts. “Now, for every intentional action we perform, we experience a similar result. The ‘intention’ is of the mind – conscious or subconscious. The ‘intention’ is the ‘first seed’ that we plant. If the intention is positive, our actions will be positive and so will the results that we experience. If the intention is negative, we will act negatively and will get back the same negative results. Therefore, take control of your thoughts by controlling your mind,” she says, adding, “Working under the guidance of a trained and qualified hypnotherapist, you can empower yourself to be the master of your mind. She elaborates upon hypnotherapy's effects on people at various levels, and in various situations. If people’s phobias inhibit them from enjoying their life to the fullest and the fear of examination, interview or speaking in public stops them from performing to the best of their abilities, hypnotherapy comes to their succour. If people are tired of dieting, exercising and still not losing weight, Hypnotherapy empowers them to make a resolve and achieve profound results. Similarly, in achieving goals, realising ambitions and resolving difficulties in relationships, hypnotherapy works wonders. For many years the science of hypnotherapy has successfully helped people in various areas of life, like increasing self-esteem, improving memory, managing pain, controlling weight, improving physical health, engendering mental and emotional calmness, overcoming fears and phobias and cessation of smoking. Coming back to hypnotherapy’s role in having greater control over one’s mind, she says, “When you have that kind of control over your mind, you can heal your other issues too, all by yourself. You can eliminate all your fears and phobias, you can improve your memory, gain more self-confidence, handle stress and anxiety, boost your self-esteem, achieve all your goals and live a happier, healthier, successful, meaningful and a more satisfying life!” Delhi-based Swati has five hundred hours of intensive classroom training and an experience of having worked with many clients in the USA and India. In India, she has become the first practising Indian hypnotherapist and past-life regression therapist to be certified by the ‘International Board of Hypnotherapy’. Many clients visit her daily for getting a solution to their issues including fears, low self-esteem, smoking cessation, anxiety, phobias, relationship and break up issues and getting healed in a big way. 72 LIFE POSITIVE MARCH2017 I have always rebelled against going to doctors and taking medicines. I was adamant that healing should happen from within. If I could heal my mind through my own efforts, why could I not heal my body?, I asked myself. And in proof of the body’s innate healing powers, I encountered several episodes of spontaneous healing. Around the time my mother was admitted to hospital for cerebral malaria, I had a miraculous recovery from constant colds and chest congestions, constipation and food allergies. I could eat anything, sleep like a log in the hospital's uncomfortable sofa and had plenty of energy. In retrospect, I realised that this happened because my focus was on my mother and not on my ailments. Apparently, the body was perfectly capable of looking after itself if only I would leave it alone. Over the last few years, the realisation has been growing that the body is absolutely healthy, and it is my own fears that block it from healing. I could not deny that any sign of ill-health would trigger off tremendous worry and anxiety. Most of my problems such as respiratory issues and Irritable Bowel Syndrome, placed an embargo on foods that I liked such as sweets, baked goodies, or fruits, and I often indulged in them. My lack of self-control would give me enormous anxiety for I feared that it would eventually kill me. Thus, each time my stomach acted up even mildly, my solar plexus would tense up, and my breath would get shallow, thus depriving the region of prana and therefore sustaining the ill-health. I have always noticed that being joyfully in company alleviated my problems because my attention was not on my physical sensations. Recently, a trip to Bangalore reconfirmed that Spirit column Naturally healthy Suma Varughese is gradually retrieving the natural health of her body by the realisation that it was only her fears and resistance that blocked it understanding. I had left home with a sensitive stomach and a lot of apprehensions on how I would manage my austere diet. But before I left for Bangalore, it suddenly hit me that a stomach problem or chest congestion were not such a big deal. People were suffering from cancer, for God’s sake. After the third day, I found my stomach was in fine fettle and that I could eat stuff like masala dosas and nachos that I had not eaten for a decade! Again, it was clear that there was really nothing majorly wrong with me save my fear and worry. Back home, the stomach continued its yo-yo act, though by now, I was convinced that it was only my resistance that kept it in place. This was dramatically proven a few days ago, when I had gone to a restaurant to meet a friend and coming home, I could feel my stomach bloating. By now I had started telling myself that it was not a big deal, and that my resistance also was not a big deal. When the tension refused to diffuse, I asked myself why it was not a big deal, and I got in touch with the truth that it was because my body was actually hale and hearty, so why should I worry about it? The worry and resistance lifted, I began to breathe deeply and my stomach instantly settled down into normalcy. This last incident has really shifted something big inside. I can no longer deny that my body is healthy, and that it is capable of handling the minor ups and downs it is subject to, if I would keep out of the way. This is my sadhana at the moment. To recognise my anxiety and step aside. To recognise my fear and guilt and step aside. To affirm my body’s robust health until I no longer worry about it. I am already feeling better! LIFE POSITIVE MARCH 2017 77 R eading this book is like meeting Nina Lekhi, the CEO of Baggit in person. From every word, sentence and page Nina’s playful, warm, exuberant, highly dynamic and enthusiastic personality pops out. The book, Bag it all, is based on the entrepreneurial success of Nina Lekhi’s bag manufacturing and retailing company called Baggit, which has gained vast popularity. Nina is not your clipped, stiffnecked, matter-of-fact CEO in a business suit. On the contrary she is full of life and emotions. Someone who makes you feel that the biggest achievements in the world are simply a matter of wishing, wanting and going after them, just like a wilful child goes after a favourite toy. A young fun-loving girl with high spirits, Nina probably never thought of becoming a business tycoon when she joined the Sophia Polytechnic as a student of Commercial Art and Design in 1983. Straight out of school she spent most of her time bunking college and having a good time with friends. As a result she failed in her foundation course. Stung deeply by the failure, she determined to prove her mettle to the world and began a small bag manufacturing unit from her home at the tender age of 18. Because of her dedication, creativity, and hand on the pulse of the youth, her bags were an instant hit with the customers. Word spread and she began getting orders from big stores as well. In the meantime she met businessman Manoj Lekhi, through her close friend Rita, and fell in love. Both of them tied the knot, and Nina’s business continued to grow because her in-laws were very loving and supportive. After sometime Nina and Manoj happened to meet Guruji Rishi Prabhakar of Siddha Samadhi Yoga. From him they learnt the value of silence, going within and overcoming petty feelings. As Nina grew internally her company grew externally. She used spiritual principles in hiring and handling employees, and started to take them on silent retreats. She never used leather to design bags and roped in the dwellers of village Katarkhadak in the manufacturing process. She also contributed to the building of Rishi Samskruti Vidya Kendra in the village. She now spends her time travelling between the village, and her Baggit Head Office in Mumbai. The book is written in an informal fashion and you can almost hear Nina speaking in her resonant and cheerful voice. Her enthusiasm is so contagious that you almost wish you were a part of her venture, seeing sales and profits go up with each turn. Perhaps that is what she wants too. To make people realise that life is only as hard or easy as you consider it to be. And for people intent on achieving success, the book is like a guided tour of Nina’s lasersharp mind, which excels at thinking possibilities, intuiting, envisioning, taking risks and implementing. - Shivi Verma Bags with a bang Bag it all Suman Chhabria Addepalli Jaico Books, Paperback, ` 299, 214 pages Revelations books
78 LIFE POSITIVE MARCH 2017 I n this wonderfully evocative book, Physicist Prof Vikram Soni dwells on every facet of our present environmental crisis. But unlike the doomsday soothsayers, he provides us with solutions to these pressing problems. It helps that Soni is a physicist who has worked in the area of matter and antimatter. Also, that he has done sterling work to protect Delhi’s threatened green belt, the Aravalli Ridge, and saving the Yamuna floodplains, which remain a crucial source of fresh water. Written in a heartfelt and gentle style, the book begins with his fight to save the Aravalli Ridge and how the policies of government agencies, including the Delhi Development Authority, put the Ridge at risk. The DDA gave permission for the construction of 13 luxury hotels on the Ridge in flagrant violation of the Indian Forest Law. Soni, noted journalist Kuldip Nayyar and other environmentalists joined hands to try and end this decimation. The book emphasises how losing an evolutionary resource like the Ridge does not make economic sense because this 80 sq. km of Ridge forest area provides a recharge potential of 30 per cent of the rainfall. This, in turn, works out to 15 billion litres of mineral water which, even if priced at 5 cents per litre works out to an economic value of $ one billion a year. Soni has also taken the unprecedented step of monetising the floodplain of the river Yamuna which is presently holding around one-and-a-half billion cubic metres of water. If this water is drawn out in a careful manner, it could take care of the needs of three million Delhites. The book rues the human interventions that have wreaked havoc on the planet, pointing out that if we want to work with the planet, we need to understand how it works. While nature works in a non-invasive manner, the author emphasises that the present marketdriven ideology that fuels consumption practises is destroying these very life support systems Presently Emeritus Professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Soni regrets that `the landscapes, the seas, and even the air we breathed as children are fading into memory.’ - Rashme Sehgal Save our home! 80 LIFE POSITIVE MARCH 2017 Do not pretend – be. Do not promise – act. Do not dream – realise. It is the Divine Presence that gives value to life. This Presence is the source of all peace, all joy, all security. Find this Presence in yourself and all your difficulties will disappear. Widen your consciousness to the dimension of the earth and you will have a place for everything. There should be somewhere upon earth a place that no nation could claim as its sole property, a place where all human beings of good will, sincere in their aspiration, could live freely as citizens of the world, obeying one single authority, that of the Supreme Truth. The true lasting quietness... comes from a complete consecration to the Divine. You will need much endurance, much perseverance and courage and an untiring goodwill. Look and see if you are capable of having all this, and then start. But once you have started, it is finished, there is no going back any more; you must go to the very end. Be courageous, enduring, and vigilant and above all, be sincere, with perfect honesty. Then you will be able to face all difficulties. This, I know The Mother teaching story Crossing the water A milkman's daughter used to carry fresh milk to customers in various villages. Among her customers was a priest living in the farthest village. To reach his house, the milkmaid had to cross a good-sized stream. People crossed it on a raft for a small fee. The priest performed a daily worship ritual of God with an offering of fresh milk. One day, when the milk came too late for the worship, he scolded the milkmaid. “What can I do?" she lamented, “I start out early from my house, but I have to wait for quite long for the boatman to arrive.” The priest responded crossly, “What?! People have crossed oceans by walking on water with God's name on their lips, and you can't even cross this little stream?” The milkmaid took his words seriously, and from then on she started bringing the priest's milk punctually every morning. He became curious about her newfound punctuality, and one day asked her how she was never late anymore. “I cross the river repeating the name of the Lord,” she replied, “just as you told me to do, without waiting for the ferry.” The priest didn't believe her, and asked, “Can you show me how you cross the river on foot?” So they went together to the stream and the milkmaid began to walk over it. Looking back, the woman saw that the priest had started to follow her and was floundering in the water. “Sir!” she cried, “You are uttering the name of God, yet all the while you are holding up your clothes from getting wet. That is not trusting in God!” Banyan Tree
LIFE POSITIVE MARCH 2017 81 I asked God to take away my pain. God said, “No. It is not for me to take away, but for you to give it up.” I asked God to make my handicapped child whole. God said, “No. Her spirit was whole, her body was only temporary.” I asked God to grant me patience. God said, “No. Patience is a byproduct of tribulations; it isn't granted, it is learned.” I asked God to give me happiness. God said, “No. I give you blessings. Happiness is up to you.” I asked God to spare me pain. God said, “No. Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me.” I asked God to make my spirit grow. God said, “No. You must grow on your own, but I will prune you to make you fruitful.” I asked for all things that I might enjoy life. God said, “No. I will give you life so that you may enjoy all things.” I asked God to help me love others, as much as He loves me. God said, “Ah! Finally you have the idea.” “How does one become a mystic?” the disciple asked. “Ah!” exclaimed the Master. “There are no rules. It is a disposition.” “Please tell me more.” “When you yearn for something different from what the world knows and teaches; when you become more compassionate; when you are able to reconcile opposites such as right and wrong, and are slow to condemn; when your sense of wonder is aroused to behold nature with divine eyes; when you let go of your ego to see God in all and you in God. That’s the moment of inner awakening.” - Cedric Rebello, SJ inspiration one-minute wisdom God said The road to mysticism
