Printers, B-220, Phase 2 Noida, 201305 Member, Indian Newspaper Society Sex is sacred Dear Reader, The lead story for April, Self-discovery through Sex, is on the sacred and spiritual side of sex. As rightly observed by the author, Rishi Rathod, today, sex has become a commodity to be used and enjoyed rather than being a deep, soul-satisfying experience capable of expanding your mind and widening your consciousness. Sex, like all other aspects of human life, has become quite skewed in recent times. On the one hand, there are instances galore of sexual predation of minors and vulnerable men and women, and on the other hand there are innumerable cases of sex drying up in the lives of married couples. They live like roommates or have extra-marital affairs. Also, the free availability of porn and a plethora of dating sites have turned sex into a game of sorts, sapping it of its sacred and deeply personal essence. The lead story tries to restore the sanctity of sex by highlighting how when couples look at sex as an act of worship and their partners as the expression of the Divine, the act becomes transcendental in nature, opening up channels of spiritual awakening, as well as ineffable, long-lasting pleasure. So let’s pause and infuse our lives with more beauty and divinity, which often gets lost in the drudgery of everyday living. We also have an interview with Vandana Khaitan, the founder of Vande Krsna Foundation, whose journey sheds light on the fact that being born with a silver spoon in your mouth does not guarantee freedom from pain. Many a misfortune can still lay siege upon you, and you might need spiritual help to resurrect yourself. Her story is a lesson for those who think that the reason for their suffering is their lack of means or opportunity. The rich can have more problems than one can imagine. Therefore, it’s important to count one’s blessings, work towards one’s goals, and not live in comparison. And last but not the least, use God to better your life. Don’t just pray. Meditate to become mentally stronger, get the right guidance, and forge ahead in life. Have a happy April.
Ancestral Karma And Its Impact On Your Life By Sacred Earth Magik By Kavya Your current life may not be the primary source of problems affecting your family, your ability to succeed financially, your emotional health, or other important areas of your life. As multidimensional beings, it is noteworthy that our lives and their important aspects may potentially result from lives we have had in other dimensions and universes, or in parallel lives. One major aspect that is generally overlooked but may be the crux of the matter in your situation is “Ancestral Karma”. Your ancestors created the foundation for life, on which your growth and progress stand. As written in her book “Waking Up In The Eye Of The Storm”, it is to be noted that what we do in life has a sure impact on our progeny. If the karma left behind by our ancestors was praiseworthy, we reap the benefits of it; if not, we come down in body to balance the imbalance struck in their time. This book also stresses that “You could be your ancestor who created the imbalance in the past and have now chosen to return in the same family to undo that karma”. How can you tell whether your ancestors are angry and their rage is affecting you? You face :- • Chronic health issues. • Efforts do not reap results. • The graph of growth is stagnant. • Long-standing court cases in the family. • No good news for several years together. • Untimely deaths and problems in child birth. • Lack of financial growth and monetary drainage. Spirit medium Dr. Kavya Jaiswal has been successfully assisting her clients for years in determining their karma and which ancestor is attempting to gain their attention through her mediumship sessions. She communicates with them to help you discover and pinpoint the exact reasons for their unhappiness and how to solve those. The solutions are specific to each seeker’s situation as they are revealed by their ancestor. On occasions, where a family feels that doing the puja at Gaya has solved their ancestral karma once and for all, they are shocked to hear the messages she brings in communication with their ancestors in their presence. One family member in many generations is chosen to execute their ancestors will. If you have felt guided to this message, seen or heard your ancestors in dreams, or feel a calling to help them find peace, contact her to find out how. Make running a healthy routine It was great reading the lead story, Run for Your Life, in the March 2023 issue of Life Positive, which elucidates both the physical and spiritual benefits of running. I gained a lot of knowledge about running customs and traditions from around the world and felt motivated to attempt to run at least once each week. My mood has improved significantly as a result, and I now understand the reason. I will definitely include more of running in my life, now that I am aware of its spiritual advantages. In my opinion we should all include jogging in our lives rather than visit gyms or shop for expensive exercise plans. -Sampat Gopal, Chennai The cover article, Run For Your Life, in the March 2023 issue of the magazine brought to mind Forrest Gump, one of my favourite movies, as well as the strength of running. In my experience, going for a run helps me feel better whenever I’m stressed. I had no idea that this was related to spiritual growth as well, and it’s something that this article so masterfully highlights. My mother used to always tell me, “No matter how successful you are, being successful in marriage is what makes us truly successful.” This is true because we can change jobs easily but not our partners. Navni Chawla’s article, Recipe for the Right Partner, in the March 2023 issue has covered many aspects of the challenge and has provided us with numerous tips on how to go about finding the ideal partner for ourselves. Yes, marriages are said to be made in heaven, but we can create heaven in marriage if we find the right one. -Sameera Reddy, Chennai In India, marriages usually involve the joining of two families, not just the man and the woman. Finding the ideal mate is really challenging because of this. Navni Chawla, in her article, Recipe for the Right Partner, in the March 2023 08 LifePositive | APRIL 2023

DSEFH tapped various sources, including the government, worked hard, and sailed through, garnering applause for the work it was doing to promote the weaving community as well as the Ryndia fabric. DSEFH believes deeply in its work and has a soul connection with Ryndia. It treats this rich fabric with immense reverence as it appreciates the Daniel promoting the traditional silk ‘Ryndia’ at a Notheastern fashion show MANDALA work of those who have woven it. It has always been a team effort for DSEFH, and it is grateful to the weavers who have made this possible. It is a matter of happiness for the entire team that the fabric they chose to throw the spotlight on is now being used by upcoming designers from their state and that the state government is also promoting it and creating outlets to make it available to more and more people. DSEFH has collaborated with the local weavers of Meghalaya and developed the fabric, right from the yarn stage, to elevate its properties. This is an amazing effort that has incorporated traditional methods of weaving, using different patterns, designs, and vegetable dyes along with unique aesthetics and modern technology. ‘Protecting, Reviving, Uplifting’ is DSEFH’s mission as regards the traditional fabrics of Northeast India, mainly Meghalaya, and promoting their use by innovating them into contemporary designer wear. It has ensured that all its designs fit into modern needs and trends, and that they are also eco-friendly. This is why it has managed to remain a unique brand. Daniel grew up with a passion for designing beautiful clothes. “The moment I see my collection being worn by models walking the ramp, I know that I have pulled off something brilliant. . . . Those moments always give me a high and will always be special,” says Daniel. Mandala 11 Most of us wish to do something for the environment but do not know what to do. It is wonderful to see people like Isha C and Alok Dhodapkart, from New Delhi, take the right step in this direction. They began Waraq in July 2023 with the vision of contributing to the environment by building a sustainable fashion brand as there weren’t many available options in the market. They saw this as an opportunity to do something sustainable, so they created limited-edition bags and accessory collections, using crueltyfree and environmentally safe bio-composite and organic materials. “With us, you don’t just own a bag or an accessory; you own a piece of art, with a story that is close to one’s heart, and everyone also contributes towards building a kinder planet!” they say with pride. Their efforts took some time, but they finally succeeded in using sustainable bio-composite materials made from coconut, cactus, cork, and organic fabrics. As theirs was a unique venture, they were thrilled and so were their friends and families. It is often said that when one’s decision is right, no matter how long it takes, it is worth it. This is certainly applicable to them. It took them almost two years to research vegan biomaterials, identify seasoned manufacturers who could work around innovative materials, and deliver highquality products. Another challenge was to find suitable artisans who would be willing to give a new brand their time and effort. As the field was new to them, it took time for them to understand the material and its changing behaviour while —Ryndia the world undergoing manufacturing. Although every day is a learning curve for them, they wish to committedly pursue their choice and decision. The customer interaction and appreciation have proved to be rewarding. Pursuing art without harming the environment is something we all would love to do, and Waraq is showing us the way by doing this wonderfully. They are present online as well as offline in multiple cities, and they organise many events around the country. Kudos, Waraq, for your efforts towards promoting sustainable art! LifePositive | APRIL 2023 We network based on our interests. Some of us network for business, some for entertainment and some for social causes. An environment lover, seeing the chaos in the environment area, Robin Viegas from Mumbai gets ideas by networking with different NGOs. Then he and his family try to implement those ideas in his building and neighbourhood. He himself does plugging early morning by picking up glass/pet bottles thrown on the roads in the 100m radius around the building that he lives in. What he collects he gives to either his building housekeeping staff or someone who deals in scrap. He has been turning all his household wet waste into compost for the last 10 years. He does this to reduce the waste going to the Deonar landfill. Additionally, he networks with Project Mumbai plastic Recyclothon drive and mobilises people living in Kalina to join the drive. He does not stop at networking with NGOs alone. When the BMC had asked people to come for discussion, he and his family were actively involved and gave many clear and doable ideas to the corporation. This Republic Day, he announced the success of his drive aimed at reducing pollution and told everyone, “We take utmost care so that the spirit of the people who take extra step for sake of the environment does not go to waste.” As of now, sustainability has become a buzzword but not all are following it sincerely and herein lies the challenge. Most companies are working to have a sustainability effort as part of their CSR by planting trees and adopting certain rural areas to enable the world to remain green. This alone would not be sufficient if everyone is not involved. This is what Robin aims to accomplish. Common citizens feel that they cannot do much to change the situation, but this is not true. Robin’s is a small step, in the right direction. As a responsible citizen, he is showing the way to all on how to be responsible green citizen. - By Jamuna Rangachari 12 Robin Viegas loves the enviornment and is dedicated to cleaning it environment NETWORKING NETWORKING for the
YOGA Mrs. Kamala Venkat is a homemaker with a great passion for YOGA. Inspired by Shri Swami Ramdev of Patanjali, she has been an ardent yoga lover and has been practising it with complete dedication for the last 20 years. She has done a Yoga Instructors’ course from VYSA(Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana) If you enjoyed last month’s twisting posture with Kamala Venkat, this time, you can try another one called Parivrtta Trikonasana Parivrtta Trikonasana, also known as Revolved Triangle Pose, or Twisted Triangle Pose, is an advanced variation of Triangle Pose. Practising this asana is believed to activate the sacral chakra (subtle energy centre). The twist in this pose breaks the block of energy trapped in the form of stiffened muscles. This improves the flow of energy by increasing flexibility throughout the body. In Sanskrit parivrtta means ‘revolved,’ or ‘turned back,’ trikona means ‘triangle,’ and asana means ‘posture.’ Method • Start this pose by standing straight on the mat. Slowly spread your legs three to four feet apart, slightly more than shoulder width. Try to keep your legs straight. • With a deep inhalation, lift your arms to shoulder level and extend them on either side, keeping them parallel to the floor. • Point your right foot slightly towards your left foot in a 45-degree turn, while also turning your torso towards the left foot. • With an exhalation, bend forward towards the extended left leg while trying to reach the left foot with your right hand. Place your right palm on the floor just in front of the left foot and stretch your left arm up towards the ceiling. Turn your neck, look in the direction of the raised left arm, and gaze at the fingertips. This is the final position of Revolved Triangle Pose. You can stay in this pose for 20 to 30 Triangle with a twist seconds, inhaling and exhaling deeply, and feel the stretch in your body. • Slowly turn your neck towards the mat and lower your raised arm, bring your right arm, which was extended towards the left foot, back to shoulder level. Then straighten your bent torso and come back to the centre. • Repeat the same steps for the other side also. • Benefits • Helps to improve balance • Strengthens and stretches the legs, feet, ankles, and abdominal muscles • Opens the chest to improve breathing • Increases flexibility in the hamstrings, shoulders, and upper back Contraindications • Surgery of the spine, knees, or ankles • Migraine • High or low blood pressure 14 LifePositive | APRIL 2023
Heartspeak 15 HEARTSPEAK I n the times we live in, ‘lifestyle’ has come to include a broad spectrum of tangible and intangible things, which can be narrowed down to two of the most important ones: health and wealth. Let’s zoom in on one important input and one important output for each of these two aspects for keeping it simple, though there are many more components, both in terms of input and output, that contribute to a balanced lifestyle. I. Health These days ‘lifestyle diseases’ is a term we encounter frequently. It includes a list of diseases that one falls prey to, thanks to the lifestyle one maintains. Sadly, this list includes serious diseases such as heart ailments, COPD, diabetes, hypertension, TB, and a variety of cancers. Health and wealth go hand in hand, says Sujatha Rao. So try and find a balance between the two The Ins and Outs of a Lifestyle A large number of these diseases progress very slowly and steadily. So, most of them do not spring onto us all of a sudden. The good news is that quite a few of them are preventable, with the power to do so lying within our control. One of the primary inputs for maintaining good health is what we eat, and the output is what we burn, both measured in terms of calories. Keeping these two somewhat in balance may help us keep the bulk of lifestyle diseases at bay. Input • Watch the calories: Nowadays, the packaged foodstuff we buy, mandatorily mentions the calorific values. So let’s use this information to buy ourselves some healthy calories.
• Eat for the heart: What we eat and how much we eat is at the heart (literally) of a healthy lifestyle. So let’s go easy on our hearts by eating healthy. • Have fun cooking: With so many YouTube recipe videos at our fingertips, cooking can turn out to be a team activity and a family pastime. This way, we know what’s cooking in terms of calorific values too. While we are at it, let’s also get back to our granny’s recipes that are low on oil and high on fibre, with a good dose of probiotics thrown in for that healthy gut. • Cheat a little: We can afford to have a few treat-ourselves days strewn in between. But we have to earn them through strict adherence to our regimen during the rest of the days. Output • Do the maths: When the calories we eat and the calories we burn are almost equal, our weight remains somewhat constant. So when I realise that I would need to walk about four km to burn that single extra-large samosa, I say “No, thank you” to such lavish helpings. Ultimately, like many things in life, eating too is a trade-off. • Don’t let the garbage pile up: “Unfortunately, the garbage that we eat accumulates at odd places on our body, making it very difficult later on to shed that extra weight off. So avoid it. • Reap what you sow: If I sit on the couch and eat those potato chips while binge-watching TV for hours, I sure can’t complain about ending up looking like a couch potato, can I? • Keep your buttons on:I don’t know about hips, but buttons definitely don’t lie. So you better take care not to burst them at the seams. No shortcuts here—you have to attempt to sweat those extra calories out. In and out Even with a perfect regimen on the input and output fronts, there’s no guarantee that one would live happily ever after. But the odds of living better and longer would definitely improve. II. Wealth Daniel Kahneman, the Nobel Prize–winning behavioural economist said, “Money does not buy you happiness, but lack of money certainly buys you misery.” Money, or wealth, is the input we need to reach our goals, be it education, buying material things in life, or attaining independence of various kinds. It is the tool that defines our standard of living. By ignoring wealth, we would be putting our health and fitness at peril. The origins of money go all the way back to the Mesopotamian temple and palace administrations in 3500 BC. Thus, money seems to have evolved as a bookkeeping and accounting process, progressing to coins and to what we presently know as currency. It can be argued that since we are paid money for our work or service, it itself is an output. But that kind of viewpoint is somewhat short-sighted. Ultimately, it’s a commodity to get what we want in life. Let’s now try to see whether we can demystify the financial aspects of life using the same simple concepts of input and output. Input Work hard: Unless you are a person who is born into riches and can live off your inherited money, you have to work almost a lifetime to earn enough to live through your sunset years comfortably. So the majority of people can’t escape long hours of work during the prime of 16 LifePositive | APRIL 2023
Sujatha Rao is a retired banker. She has been contributing articles to various newspapers and magazines over the last two decades. Two of her short stories were placed third in Times of India’s national level Write India contest (Seasons 1 and 2). Her first book titled In the Company of Stories was published recently. Her other interests include reading, traveling, practising yoga, and mindfulness. We welcome your comments and suggestions on this article. Mail us at [email protected] their lives. In addition to the hard work, the knowledge to make that hard-earned money work harder will help us make enough to last our lifetime. “A miser lacks what he has and what he hasn’t.”A case study. Because of the way David’s family lived, the world viewed them as not-so-well-to-do. David worked hard round the clock and spent most of his time outside the house. Even his family members thought he was a loser, as they continued to live in penury. However, when David passed away due to a sudden heart attack, his family found more than 10 property documents stashed away in the locker. He never got to enjoy the fruits of his toil. For him, money became an end in itself, and he ended up dying with a hoard of money unspent and unenjoyed. Unfortunately, the sorry state of affairs continued even after his death. David’s only son went berserk on seeing such riches all of a sudden. He squandered it away, and his life too was nipped in the bud, thanks to his unhealthy addictions. Output Go after your goals: Money is the tool to get that output we want, both tangible (house, car, furniture) and intangible (education, experiences). The output, in this context, varies from person to person. However, it is worthwhile to remember that once we make more than enough, it’s time for us to give some of it to those who are less privileged than we are. Aamdhani athanni, kharcha rupayya (Income, fifty paise; expenditure, one rupee). A case study. Dheeraj and his family members gave the impression of being very rich. They maintained a very high standard of living for decades. So when Dheeraj committed suicide one fine day by jumping into the reservoir of the dam in the town, citing financial troubles as the reason, it came as a rude shock to everyone. Immediately thereafter, the family had to file for bankruptcy, and that’s when it became public knowledge that they had been spending way beyond their means to keep up the façade of being a wealthy family. Keeping such a false social status cost Dheeraj his life. His lifestyle became a terminal illness of sorts. In and out David and Dheeraj are outliers on the different ends of the same normalisation curve. One was not living the life he could easily afford, while the other went chasing a lifestyle he could ill afford. For both of them, their chosen lifestyle proved to be a fatal mistake. Maintaining a healthy balance between the inputs and outputs of the multiple parameters of life is the foundation of having a healthy lifestyle as highlighted through a couple of examples. We can have a ‘well-thy’ lifestyle when we work towards what we want out of our lives, by directing the simple inputs towards our desired outputs through our hard work, creativity, and self-discipline. 18 LifePositive | APRIL 2023
Close Encounter 19 Vande Vandana CLOSE-ENCOUNTER Vandana Khaitan, a young woman transformed by the grace of her guru, shares with Navni Chawla her dream of taking her Master’s legacy forward Born into a typical Marwari business family, Vandana was different from the rest. While everyone in her circle of friends and family sought and pursued worldly pleasures, she had a different longing: she wanted to explore her inner world. Propelled by her suffering, she undertook a mighty selftransformation journey with the grace of her guru, Yogi Protoplasm (Swami Prajna Aranyaji). Vandana Khaitan is the daughter of a prominent businessman. She invited me to her home for this interview. As I sat in her beautiful house and began talking with her, I was intrigued by her journey. On the next page are the highlights of the conversation. Vandana with her guru Yogi Protoplasm
Can you briefly tell us about yourself and your journey? There was a big tragedy in my life, but if suffering takes one closer to God and intensifies one’s vairagya [detachment] and bhakti [devotion], it is a blessing in disguise. When I was 17, a 65-year-old doctor, who was a family friend, messed up my life. Maybe it was some past-life karma. He tried to molest me, and when I was rude to him I got framed by him. He told my parents that I suffered from manic depression and that I should be taken to a psychiatrist. My 12th board exam results were poor, because of which I was a little depressed, but I certainly did not suffer from manic depression. I had been a topper in school and wanted to go to the USA to study, but my dad refused to send me and was keen on getting me married after school. I rebelled and secretly applied to American Ivy League colleges. However, I did not get admission. My poor parents fell into the doctor’s trap and rushed me to a psychiatrist who put me on strong antidepressants. Only after many years did my parents find out that the doctor was a crook and had cheated them of crores of rupees in a charity hospital project and that there were cases in court against him for molesting nurses. When I discontinued the medicines abruptly, in anger at what the doctor had done to me, the reaction was so bad that everyone thought I had some illness [antidepressants are psychotic drugs and must never be discontinued abruptly]. For 15 long years, these doctors messed up my life. But I believe that I also have some good karma and through Krishna’s kripa [grace], at the age of 32, I met my guruji, Yogi Protoplasm, in Rishikesh, who healed my life and got me out of the mess. When I started narrating my problems to him, he told me to keep quiet and said the root cause of any problem is attachment to the perishable body. He made me realise that I was not this perishable body but a divine eternal soul. He said, “Stop talking about your problems and sit and chant ‘Om’ with me. Mantras [sounds with mystical powers] will help you break your attachment to your body and connect you to your soul bliss.” Chanting Om for hours in his presence for a few days healed my disturbed mind, which became peaceful. Under his guidance, I left the antidepressants slowly. So I owe my life to Guruji. Now I am 54, and it has been 22 years since I left the medicines. Om is not only a moksha [liberation] mantra, but it also has great healing powers. I call my journey thokar se thakur tak [from misery to the master]. What is the vision and mission of your foundation, Vande Krsna? Vande Krsna was founded by me primarily to promote science and spirituality, and especially my guru Yogi Protoplasm’s teachings on Vedanta (the body of knowledge found at the end of the Vedas) and science globally. Gurudev was a disciple of Ramana Maharshi and Yogi Rama. As a former biology professor, he was famous for explaining deep Vedantic truths through science in a simple manner and for his intensive meditation retreats. He was a tapasvi mahatma [master of penance] who lived only on milk for 35 years. Though I am only a struggling seeker still trying to overcome many weaknesses, I dream of turning my guru’s camps into a global movement like Vipassana. and money could be taught to live like raj-rishis [king-sages], ninety per cent of the poverty and corruption problems on the planet could be resolved. I also dream of setting up: • Scientific spiritual spas [SSS] which will heal the body, mind, and soul. • Kirtan [spiritual songs] bars where the DJ only plays rock kirtan and where only juice is served so that we can attract the youth who are mostly going astray through drugs, alcohol, etc. • Womb-to-tomb centres [WTTC] which comprise garbh sanskar schools attached to old age homes and a sarva dharma temple where the values of all religions are taught right from the womb stage. Kids must be taught that values are more valuable than valuables. • Make ‘masala’ message movies which not only entertain but also enlighten. • As Kalamji [Dr APJ Abdul Kalam] said, “Dare to dream!” Where does spirituality meet science? In Guruji’s camps, he would show us pictures of skeletons, telling us to ask ourselves the eternal question, Who am I? Am I these perishable body which will certainly decay with disease and die, or am I a divine eternal soul full of bliss, peace, and cosmic love? Come to think of it, what do most of us do most of our lives? We indulge in fancy stuff— clothes, jewellery, bags, cars—and, finally, fancy diseases, fancy hospitals, and, then, fancy funerals. Mrityuloka [abode of death; Earth] is only a fool’s paradise. Guruji would show us pictures of the circulatory system and the pumping heart to teach us how to erase the ego. He would say, “Suppose your next meeting is with the prime minister and he is going to give you a big cheque for your project. You are very excited to meet him, but your heart suddenly fails. Can you meet him? So there is a higher power running this cosmic show. Surrender and become egoless. ERASE EGO. This was my guru’s mantra. Close Encounter 21 The media is very powerful, and if we can make masala-cum-message movies which not only entertain but also enlighten, they could help awaken the millions of spiritually starving people on the planet
Mahatma Gandhi shook the entire British Empire, but he never said that he did it. He always said it was the Lord’s will done through him. Greatness lies in being humble, simple, and selfless. When people ask my guru why he calls himself Yogi Protoplasm, he would show them cells under a microscope. What is each cell made of? Protoplasm. So, whether you are rich or poor, black or white, male or female, Hindu or Muslim, we are all made up of protoplasm. The Upanishads also say that the soul is one in all and thus we must practise cosmic living, but alas, most people are only living in a spirit of cut-throat competition. Human love is mostly selfish and conditional. Look at the high rate of divorces, female foeticide, rape, and murder in our society. Only saints can practise unconditional cosmic love. If you want to know more about science and spirituality please read Yogiji’s book Who am I?: Scientific spiritual search. It is available on Amazon and other sites. You could also watch the film based on the book on the Vande Krsna channel on YouTube. What inspires you to make movies? The media is very powerful, and if we can make masala-cum-message movies which not only entertain but also enlighten, they could help awaken the millions of spiritually starving people on the planet. I have made four films so far on Vedanta and science, inspired by Guruji: • Who am I?: Scientific Spiritual Search. It is based on Yogiji’s book of the same name. With the help of skeletons, circulatory systems, galaxies, and protoplasm, Yogiji takes the seeker on an exciting scientific voyage of Self-discovery. Self-discovery is Self-recovery. • Mum: Meditation ultimate medication, which talks about the healing powers of the mantra Om, Garbhsanskar, past Yogi vs Bhogi 22 LifePositive | APRIL 2023
life regression therapy, how to heal relationships, and so on. • Search of a Spiritual Scientist is a docudrama on Yogi Protoplasm and his great gurus— Ramana Maharshi and Yogi Rama. The film explores how a biology professor from Nellore became a great yogi [one who practises yoga] and a spiritual scientist. • Yogi vs Bhogi (a person who indulges in sensual pleasures). In the bhogi’s life, we have shown corruption, female foeticide, etc. The yogi tries to awaken the bhogi through Soul Shakti. Art of Living singer Siddharth Mohan plays the role of the yogi and sings in the film, and Kiran Bedi makes a guest appearance too. So, yogi bano ya bhogi ya fir rogi (become a yogi or a bhogi or a diseased person)—the choice is yours! I dream of remaking Yogi vs Bhogi for the big screen. I am grateful to my dad who helped me produce these movies. Special thanks to Sucheta and Harsh Anand who directed the films as a guru seva (service to the guru) project. Movie-cum-meditation workshops are done through me. Level 1 is for two hours, and Level 2, for two days. We teach an ancient meditation technique called Pranava Nada Anusandhan, or six stages of chanting Om. In the past, we have done workshops for the Bhilwara group, Manya group, PHD Chamber of Commerce, and others. What, according to you, needs to change in the world we live in? I feel there are many problems on the planet, but the root cause is a lack of spiritual awakening. Why is man so greedy and selfish? Why are most people religious and practising commercial devotion, but only a few are spiritual, leading simple selfless lives? Why is there corruption and politics even in the ashrams (monasteries)? I feel that a ‘values vaccine’ is the urgent need of the hour and that instilling values must start right from the womb stage. Garbhadhan and Garbhsanskar must be promoted. Children must be taught the knowledge of the soul: At the soul level we are all one and if we have to earn our promotion from Mrityuloka (which is temporary and full of suffering) to Brahmaloka ( where there is no disease and death) we have to live pure lives of simplicity and selflessness. Alas, due to ignorance, most of us are running after paisa [money], power, and party—not Purity. Close Encounter 23 MUM: A film by Vandana Khaitan
Kids must also be taught about the Law of Karma and the principles of reincarnation. If all these spiritual truths are drilled into children right from the womb stage, we could fight all the problems on the planet with Soul Shakti. Pseudo-secularism destroyed our heritage. Secularism means values from all religions must be taught, and kids must learn to respect their differences. The goal of human birth is not just money and marriage, but moksha. I have written a booklet called MAD—Make a Difference—which explores spiritual solutions to problems on the planet, such as corruption, female foeticide, and drugs. This book is available on Amazon. How do you relate to Krishna Consciousness? I am a Krishna bhakta [devotee] and I practise both Saguna and Nirguna Upasana. I dance to Krishna Kirtan every day for around one hour in the morning and evening. It keeps me charged and blissful, and connected to the Lord of the Universe. Kirtan is the easiest form of sadhana in Kaliyuga. It is nice to do kirtan in the morning and evening, but we must also try to see Krishna or our Ishta Devata in everyone we meet, whether rich or poor, friend or foe, male or female, healthy or sick. Only when we can radiate and practise unconditional cosmic love, we get eligible for liberation from this painful cycle of repeated birth, old age, disease, and death. What is love according to you? Human love is mostly selfish and conditional. Look at the high rate of divorce, female foeticide, and rape in our society. Divine love is selfless and unconditional, as in the case of Mother Teresa picking up abandoned people on the streets and taking care of them or that of Jas Kalra, who is only 22 and heads the Earth Saviours Foundation. His NGO also picks up and takes care of homeless people. We must, as human beings, aspire to move from our human love into cosmic love. Only then will God, or Divine Dad, free us from the repeated cycle of birth, old age, diseases, and death. I know many rich ladies, who read the Kids must also be taught about the Law of Karma and the principles of reincarnation. scriptures, do not touch non-veg food, and do a lot of pujas [rituals] but are guilty of committing female foeticide. Aren’t they murderers? Most people are religious and practise commercial devotion to get this or that from God, but only a few are spiritual and lead simple selfless lives. I find those who attain cosmic love very blessed. Visualise one person who has hurt you and send that person vibrations of forgiveness and say, “Oh God, You Yourself have come in this form to help me work out my past life karma and to test me. Please help me to have compassion for this person and not hatred.” I have used this visualisation to heal many of my relationships and forgive people who hurt me in my troubled times. How does one access creativity and intuition easily? One can access the reservoir of creativity, inspiration, and intuition through chanting, meditation, and selfless work as they help to purify our mind. As our soul awareness increases, our intuitive powers also increase proportionally. This body, which we keep decking up, will be burnt to ashes one day. Mantras, especially the Om mantra, have the power to break the attachment to the perishable body and connect us to our divine soul. As the mind becomes purer and subtler through sadhana [spiritual practice] and seva, creativity also shoots up. So, a pure mind is your passport to becoming a Bliss Billionaire. But, unfortunately, most people are chasing pati [husband], putra [son], paisa[money], party, property, and power, but only a few are chasing Purity. Maya Magic [illusion] is very powerful in Mrityuloka that allures everyone and keeps them away from realising their highest Self. What is the antidote to suffering according to you? A Self-realised master knows that they are not this perishable body but a divine, eternal soul and radiates unconditional cosmic love. They can watch the ups and downs of life like a drama and be mentally unaffected. Ramana Maharshi had cancer, but was immersed in the bliss of Samadhi [ abidance in the Self] and was not affected mentally by his body pain. In the last stages of his life, he was operated on without anaesthesia. Of course, it is very rare to find a yogi like Ramana Maharshi 26 LifePositive | APRIL 2023
Close Encounter 27 in today’s times, but if we are regular with our prayers, chanting, meditation, and selfless work, we can also access our divine soul’s blissful nature. Whether one is playing the role of a beggar or a millionaire, this body will certainly disease, decay, and die. The Upanishads and the Geeta repeatedly tell us we are not these perishable bodies but divine eternal souls full of bliss, peace, and cosmic love. Because of ignorance, our attachment to the perishable body is strong, and that’s why we suffer. We say “my body, my money, my family” but, in reality, nothing is ours. This body, which we keep decking up, will be burnt to ashes one day. Mantras, especially the Om mantra, have the power to break the attachment to the perishable body and connect us to our divine soul. So, we must make a routine of prayers, chanting, and meditation, and try to see and serve God in everyone, whether rich or poor, black or white, Hindu or Muslim, friend or foe. The Geeta says your last thought determines your next birth. So, if your last thought is pure or divine, you will certainly get out of this cycle of birth, old age, disease, and death. The most beautiful thing about Vandana is that regardless of whatever she went through in life, she used all the good, bad, and ugly experiences to become a better human being and help other people transform their lives. Rishi Rathod explores why sexual energy drives our lives towards either fulfilment or depravity and how we can use it consciously to become superhumans. The marvellous paradox is that we can ‘sleep’ with our partners and, at the same time, ‘wake up’ to our Self! LEAD STORY Self Discovery Through Sex 28 LifePositive | APRIL 2023
Lead story 29
The biological purpose of sex is the proliferation of species. While in the animal kingdom this activity is seasonal in nature and does not include emotional involvement or long-term association with the partner, in the human kingdom, sex is an integral part of everyday existence, dictating how we identify ourselves and relate to others. We use sex to connect emotionally, build lasting bonds, explore different possibilities of pleasure hidden in the human body, form family units, and even get spiritual experiences and growth in some cases. Humans have also looked at sex and its consequences as a form of responsibility. Take the institution of marriage, for example. It was created to give shelter and long-term protection to the mother and the offspring once man and woman cohabited and produced a child from the union. Traditionally, a man’s job was to provide food, clothing, and shelter not only to his wife but also to the children they birthed together, till the offspring became self-reliant. Marriage also promotes a sense of commitment and responsibility towards one’s partner and family, leading to a more cohesive and functional society. Technological development and its impact on marriage However, many aspects that were true for marriage once upon a time have changed as a result of technological growth. Women today are not as dependent on men for their survival. They can earn their bread and have the option of living in a secure apartment building with adequate legal protection to ensure their physical safety. They might not feel compelled to marry in order to have babies or get physical protection. Artificial insemination, egg freezing, and test-tube babies are the new realities. A woman can typically assume all the roles that have historically been played by men. This change has even affected how humans relate to sex. The availability of contraceptives and the freedom to marry or not have made people more experimental with sex and relationships. Sex is now seen as a means of enjoyment and self-gratification rather than a process to beget progeny. The rise of dating sites such as Tinder and Bumble has normalised the hook-up culture which is based on short-term relationships lasting only a weekend or a few weeks. Sex can be used to connect emotionally and grow spiritually 30 LifePositive | APRIL 2023

The current scenario Freedom, availability, and a plethora of options to choose from in terms of a sexual partner have led people to treat sex as a commodity. They yearn for more variety and spice demanding more orgasms, more toys, and more thrill. Since porn uses this tactic to entice viewers, we are surrounded by a culture that supports this indulgence. Sadly, this mad race for extreme gratification is never fulfilled. Ajay Kulkarni, 34, says that it’s a mindless cycle. “It looks cool these days to be sexually open, yet you don’t feel deeply satisfied. I often think, where is it all going to end? Indulging with multiple partners and multiple tools and techniques but reaching nowhere. How absurd this whole situation is!”’ Rashmi Singh, 34, says, “When I first started having sex, I was considerably younger, and I did it to satisfy my partner. Because I wanted to be the girlfriend, I believed that it was something I was expected to do. But it doesn’t work this way. The focus of these early interactions was more on me offering pleasure and hoping for a connection in return rather than me getting pleasure and connection. I’m relieved that time has passed.” She continues, “As I became older and a wee bit wiser, I realised that I didn’t have to give others sex. I could opt to engage in sexual activity for my personal gain. Even though I became more aware of my body and my sexual preferences, I had never been into the idea of engaging in sex solely for sexual gratification. I yearned for the closeness and intimacy that comes from sharing sex with someone I cared about. Today, I see sex as a means of reconnecting with myself and the Divine— God, Goddess, the cosmos, your Higher Self, or anything you might want to call it—as well as truly connecting with another human. When done with intention, sex may be a sacred rite and a spiritual exercise. Life’s beauty and pleasures are made possible through it.” From her story, I realised that the intention determines whether sex is a physical activity or a spiritual practice. musical performance with the person you love. People prefer the first one because it is easily accessible; however, when you experience the latter, there is a considerable shift in your approach towards sex. Luckily for the people of this subcontinent, there are great scriptures to get guidance from, such as Vigyan Bhairav Tantra (a Tantric text), Kamasutra, and Ananga Ranga. The purpose of this article is not to prescribe methods from such scriptures but to understand the fundamentals of sexual energy and how to use it to live a deep, intense, and fulfilling life. The importance of sex in a healthy relationship “I think sex helped us form a close friendship,” says Monisha Bhargav, 36, from Pune. “Despite the fact that we were partially in love, we weren’t all that close. Sex brought us closer. It opened Lead story 33 There are great scriptures to get guidance on sex our brains, and we started spending a lot of time together. You’ll eventually appreciate the entire process, while it initially feels novel.” Despite the freedom available to men and women to experiment with sex and partners, marriage is still a sought-after option for people looking to enjoy a stable, happy life. Furthermore, the probability of accessing higher joys of sex is possible only when one has a committed partner who is open to experimenting. Monisha believes that arranged marriages can have more sexual content than love marriages as there is an element of surprise and suspense in them like in a thriller movie. Whereas, in love marriages, couples are already familiar with each other taking the novelty and anticipation away from it. She adds, “Not that our lives have been without difficulty or that we have never disagreed. Our frequent fights—some of them major—have led to my brother-in-law calling us Tom and Jerry. We went through our silent periods, have had heated confrontations, and experienced everything that a typical married couple does and will continue to experience. However, we also have and always will have love.” Everyone enjoys intimacy and being close to their lover. Being in a physical connection makes one feel fulfilled and cherished. When you remove sex from marriage, all that is left is what you can do with your friends. A happy marriage depends a lot on having good sex. Mismatch in sexual desires Sadly, not all marriages succeed; or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that not all couples reciprocate or engage in sex as intended or wanted by their partner.
A post went viral on social media a few years ago when a woman shared an email her husband sent her shortly before she left for a business trip. The email included a spreadsheet in which the husband had methodically noted every time he had attempted to initiate sex with her and the reasons why she had declined. The internet was divided on the subject; some supported the wife and thought this was a petty and childish move, while others (mostly) sided with the husband, who was clearly upset. No matter what, it did serve to highlight the importance of sex for a happy married life. Everyone has needs. If a person’s need for sex is not met, it will inevitably manifest in other ways, such as bitterness or, as in the case of the above example, passive anger. Sexual need is as valid as the need for food or water. Therefore, it’s understandable how a lack of sex could eventually lead to the dissolution of a marriage. Many people feel that when they are not under the strain of a job or family, sex is the only time they can truly connect with their spouse. It goes without saying that everyone has different sex drives and that no one should be forced to have sex against their will, yet it’s undeniably devastating to be rejected by your spouse repeatedly for seemingly insignificant reasons. In order for a relationship to succeed, there must be clear and honest communication about this, as well as an effort to strike a balance that is beneficial to both parties. Ideally, sexual intimacy should occur when both parties are ready. There are instances when one feels pressured or deprived sexually, and this creates the groundwork for future issues in the relationship. On the other hand, sexual compatibility is by far the most crucial factor after trust for a healthy marriage. There can be a compromise from both sides if you and your spouse do not have the same libido, but it is preferable to get married to someone you are compatible with from the get-go. What do the experts say Sex educator and intimacy coach Molly Carter concurs with the ideas raised above. She believes that good sex is one of the most An incompatibility in sexual desires can strain the relationship betweean a husband and wife 34 LifePositive | APRIL 2023
Lead story 35 crucial ingredients of a serious, long-term relationship. It’s one of the best measures of marital fulfilment since it encourages deeper emotional connection between partners. Molly says that the aspect of sexual compatibility in a marriage should not be disregarded because, if overlooked, it might cause a lot of stress and abrasion in the relationship. When one person wants sex but the other doesn’t, it causes more than just sexual annoyance. Because sexual activity is never solely sexual. Even if you believe it’s simply about getting your rocks off, there is much more to it than that. Dr Jain, 48, from Mumbai says that he has a good sexual appetite whereas his wife, who is also a doctor, has very low sexual desires. Their relationship, as a result, has hit rock bottom. He misses sex. According to Molly, the issue is more complex than just brain chemicals in cases where one partner is missing out on sex. It emotionally affects people and can seriously damage their self-esteem. The rejected spouse is left feeling empty and abandoned. They sense that they are not welcome. They feel undesirable and gloomy. They yearn for touch and miss intimacy. Their ego views their partner’s lack of libido as a slight against them personally. This gradually turns into resentment, eventually eroding the very foundation of marriage. From this perspective, sex in marriage is paramount. Sex keeps your body and brain healthy, and can even increase your lifespan! Molly says that there are many benefits of having sex for both men and women: • Regular sex prevents problems related to blood pressure and the heart. The blood circulation in the body increases, the skin starts glowing, and there will be no complaints of insomnia. • A healthy sex life improves the immunity of both partners because happy people have greater immunity. In fact, during sex, a hormone called oxytocin is secreted in the body, due to which the feeling of happiness surges in both men and women. A person with low levels of oxytocin is more likely to be divorced. • A woman’s self-confidence endures when she receives consistent physical support from her husband. Similarly, when men are sexually fulfilled, they feel more confident at the workplace too. • Sex is an effective pain reliever and provides comfort to both partners. • Women who engage in sex often become adept at the art of lovemaking and so do men. • Women get irritated and ill without sex and are unable to comprehend problems well, and if they do, they are afraid to voice them in front of others. Men, on the other hand, might feel anxious and frustrated, and have trouble sleeping without enough sex in life. • Sex prevents women from experiencing depression. Note: Don’t draw any conclusions based solely on the symptoms of the above ailment because it could possibly be caused by other factors. Only sex, which takes place with the woman’s consent, is good for her. • Regular sex is one of the best cardio exercises for men to keep their hearts in fine fettle. • Men who have regular sex have a lower risk of developing prostate cancer, particularly advanced or high-grade prostate cancer.
Sex and spirituality: how they are linked The most common misconception about sex is that it is impure or immoral. Contrary to this belief, sex is sacred. As I’ve become older, I’ve come to appreciate the depth of knowledge our ancestors and spiritual teachers possessed when they wrote scriptures on sex. When I realised that sex is a pure cosmic force and that engaging in it physically establishes a direct link with the Divine, my entire worldview transformed. When we are immersed in heightened sensory experiences of a sexual nature, we lose track of time and feel ecstatic and blissful. Maya is the force of nature that keeps us engaged in the world outside, and all spiritual practices aim to help us turn our gaze from the external to the place within. Disengaged from the external, we experience the Self within, whose true nature is bliss, or ananda. Even a microsecond of disengagement with the world during a spiritual experience makes us forget our ego and gives us a foretaste of that bliss that is our true nature. This occurs frequently when we are moved by music, overcome by bhajans (devotional music), or even breathtaking scenery. The forgetting of the individual self is the beginning of ecstasy. Sexual orgasm is the purest form of this forgetting of the ego on the bodily level and is, therefore, a window into our spiritual possibility. In the words of Osho, “The body can become a vehicle to that which is beyond the body, and sex energy can become a spiritual force.” Sexual, spiritual, and creative energies are all, in my opinion, aspects of the same whole. You will be sexually expressed if you are creatively expressed. Osho says, “With less sexual energy, less intelligence exists; with more sexual energy, more intelligence, because sex is a deep search to uncover, not only bodies, not only opposite-sex body, but everything that is hidden.” Our sexual energy is a precious resource that has to be handled gently and lovingly. We will feel worn out and miserable if we waste it or use it with individuals who don’t care about us. It’s the same as spending money on items we don’t need because we’ll have nothing in the end. But if we use our sexual energy sensibly, we may harness a strong force that improves both our individual lives as well as our relationships with others. In addition to feeling fantastic after conscious sex, we also get a chance to work on being present, connected, and devoted to our partner. Sex as a spiritual experience What popular culture tells us about sex is Sex is a pure cosmic force 36 LifePositive | APRIL 2023

Individuals frequently view sex as an object, masturbating while watching it casually, as in porn. This strategy might result in an orgasm, but it can also be fleeting and animalistic (one lasts only for 22 seconds on an average). This method of enjoying sex pulls us away from both our genuine selves as well as the present moment, which is the only reality. The real objective—the potential of sex to be a bridge to our souls—is always present in us. We have had too low expectations from sex for far too long. It is a strong energy that has more potential to enhance our lives than we are aware of. What if having sacred sex led to a level of intimacy with your spouse that you never knew existed? Transcending sexual energy Let’s explore sexuality in a whole new way. To begin with, you should understand that you are a spiritual being having a human experience and that you were made according to a divine blueprint. Accept that this includes sex as well. Recognise that your companion is also an expression of the Divine, just like you. This includes even a partner who irritates and tests you. Broaden your perspective and let go of whatever preconceived notions you may be having about them. Consider having sex with your spouse as a sacred act of worship. Make sure to exercise your devotional muscle because you will only get what you put into it. It’s okay to fake it till the time it becomes your second nature. By holding your partner in this ultimate vision, you will be loving them as the highest expression of their divine Self. This is truly divine essence in action. Create an environment in which sacred sex can flourish. Engage the senses. Make use of soft pillows, blankets, flowers or petals, music, and candles. In brief, Sex ia a pure cosmic force and that engaging in it physically establishes a direct link with the Divine, my entire worldview tranformed.
prepare the room as you would for meditation. Master’s advice for multiple orgasmic experiences Master Mantak Chia, the creator of the Universal Healing Tao System and Tao Yoga, has assisted hundreds of people transform sexual energy into spiritual experiences. Based in Thailand, he has developed specific training methods to help people experience several orgasms without ejaculation from a single instance of sexual intercourse. According to Master Chia, our attention, or brain energy, is the key to converting sexual energy. He believes that sexual drive, just like everything else, is a form of energy, which gives desired results if you know how to work with it. In an interview on How To Become A Sexual Master: The Multiple Male Orgasm Explained on YouTube, he says that 95 per cent of our brain energy is utilised in the external environment or at work. If we could redirect this energy inward, we could reconstruct our internal organs and everything that moves within the body. Sadly, we are now losing 95 per cent of it outside. And because of this, the brain is in big trouble. People are disoriented, perplexed, and clueless. We are getting sicker and sicker because we are focussing our brain energy on other things rather than our bodies. Master Chia says that our energy flows in the direction of our attention. He advocates preparing the body for this transcendental experience. The first step is to identify your pelvic floor muscles. This muscle is the same one you use to stop the urine while urinating. After you’ve identified the muscle, you must squeeze, hold, and release it. This is called the Kegel exercise. During the day, you can perform it while sitting or standing. Master Chia recommends starting cautiously and working up to 300 repetitions to master control over this muscle. Visualisation The energy is then drawn up from the base of Master Mantak Chia helped hundreds of people transform sexual energy into spiritual experiences. 38 LifePositive | APRIL 2023

your root chakra to your abdomen, then to the heart centre, and finally to your brain through visualisation or meditation. We must practise doing this during sexual intercourse once we have mastered this technique. We must stop mid-intercourse, perform the Kegel exercise to control the pubococcygeus muscle (PC muscle), and then direct the energy towards whichever organ we want to in order to avoid reaching the point of no return (ejaculation). Beginners should start at a low-risk zone of 80 per cent while they are still in control and feeling great rather than reaching 90 or 95 per cent towards ejaculation and then doing this exercise. With regular and sincere practice, one can master control of the ejaculation force and direct the same to higher chakras (subtle energy centres) or internal organs. This process helps improve the functioning of organs to a great extent, and one can live disease-free for much longer. However, the time frame may vary depending on individual factors such as dedication, consistency, and prior experience with the skill. It is important to set realistic goals and track progress regularly to stay motivated. According to Master Chia, a man is thought to ejaculate 6,000–7,000 times on average throughout his lifetime. It’s important to remember, though, that only a small portion of these ejaculations are required for reproduction. Although Master Chia’s talk was on achieving multiple orgasms, in essence, it is all about holding your semen and not releasing it. This is nothing but practising Brahmacharya in the Indian context. It is a kind of sadhana (spiritual practice) for many seekers on the path of Selfrealisation, especially those who do Tantric practices or follow Brahmacharya, where one holds the semen during intercourse and does not let it out. In fact, my guru Maiyaa, gave us a meditation technique where we have to visualise and raise the energy from the root chakra to the heart chakra, transforming it from sexual force to love and compassion. In normal intercourse, the orgasm one feels is nothing but a glimpse of bliss. But because we lose energy, we feel drained. Master Chia says that most people deplete their sexual energy reserves throughout life without replenishing them, which leads to numerous health issues. Whereas, he says, “If one knows how to maintain orgasms for long periods of time, the universal and earthly forces can be activated and combined to facilitate higher bliss, which is a powerful healing and revitalising energy.” He further adds, “If the sexual energy is directed upwards, it extraordinarily heightens all mental and physical faculties.” Pankush (digital name), a student of Master Chia, says, “I have been practising sexual transmutation for three to four months and have seen considerable positive changes in my work and energy levels.” This concept is not new and has been practised in various cultures for centuries, such as in Tantra and Taoism. By harnessing sexual energy, individuals can tap into their inner power and achieve a deeper connection with themselves and the world around them. Hopefully, humanity will wake up sooner than later to harness the life it promises to all. 40 LifePositive | APRIL 2023
Food 41 FOOD Worried about how to maintain your figure this wedding season? You will forget your woes after following Naini Setalvad’s tips; so go ahead and have a good time! Feast Without Feeling Guilty
I t’s the season of baubles and bubbly, of sparkle and sanctity, of dance and delicacies, of weaves and weddings! I am sure you’re excited about the celebration that accompanies weddings, but with all the delicious food around, are you scared that you will compromise your health? Worry not! I will show you how to stay fit and still devour all the mouth-watering food: Cancel the crash diet: I can’t emphasise enough how often people make the grave mistake of crash dieting before a wedding. They think that if they compensate by starving themselves before, they can gorge at the wedding. But the body doesn’t work that way. Starving yourself makes your hunger hormones go into a tizzy. When you do begin to eat, the deprived body will keep wanting to eat more and more as the hunger feedback mechanism is broken. You will end up sick to the stomach and unable to enjoy the event. Hydrate: In the midst of hair, make-up, dressing up for the event, one often forgets to drink water, resulting in your being parched at the end of the day. Like me, if you too will be dancing all night, you may end up dehydrated and mistake it for hunger. It is best to keep sipping on water throughout the day and having unsweetened lemHydrate often during the day to not feel parched later onade whenever you can, to make up for the loss of electrolytes. Get a head start by drinking a couple of glasses first thing in the morning when you wake up. Don’t forget the veggies: I have a simple rule for all my clients. 50 per cent of any meal should be made up of vegetables. Nowadays, most wedding buffets include an assortment of salads and stir-fries. It is best to start your meal with a good portion of these vegetables. If a vegetable soup is available, that too can be included. These vegetables will k e e p you satiated without adding on calories. The boost of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants will keep your skin glowing. Skip the starters: One of the biggest mistakes most people make is going overboard on starters. However tiny they may seem, they actually do a Starving yourself while on a crash diet is dangerous 42 LifePositive | APRIL 2023
Food 43 lot of harm. I suggest you ditch the fried, calorie-dense starters and opt for the main course directly. If you must have starters, try to go for the barbecued vegetables or roasted nuts. Savour selectively: Nowadays, weddings have elaborate menus consisting of multiple cuisines. Many people get excited and try to savour everything laid out before them. This usually results in an excess of grain consumption. I would suggest you stick to one grain (i.e., roti, rice, or dosa). Accompany it with vegetables, a protein like a dal or a tandoori grilled chicken, and a pickle to make a complete meal. Don’t overdo the dessert: No, I am not asking you to give up on dessert completely, but do bear in mind that processed sugar can result in weight gain or an acne flare-up. My first choice would be fresh seasonal fruits that are usually available. (In the mango season, one really doesn’t have an excuse to skip out on the fruit.) Otherwise, opt for a tiny portion of kheer or phirni. Avoid fried and creamy desserts. Remember, moderation is key. Avoid alcohol: I believe that weddings are an event of utmost sanctity, and to maintain its purity, alcohol should not be entertained. Not only does it add empty calories to your diet, but it is also responsible for your post-binge hangovers. Instead of dealing with dehydration and post-drinking exhaustion, simply ditch the alcohol and keep your spirits high. Burn the dance floor: What is more fun than grooving to music with your friends and family? Dance the night away without any inhibitions. Dance is one of my favourite forms of exercise that does not feel like exercise at all. Make sure there is at least a half-hour gap between your meal and dancing as you might get stomach stitches. It is also very important to hydrate at this point.

An ardent seeker at heart, she also runs her online writing and healing workshops called WoW. You can read more about her on www.MeghaBajajWoW.com. blessed!’ actually seems to keep bringing more of it. I have trained my mind to find something to feel so blessed about. Feel blessed, and blessings flow. Law of nature. Law of attraction. Call it what you may, but it works. Try it. There is a part of Grace that doesn’t seem in my control. Something about it feels very mysterious. Beyond the finite mind. I believe this is something Higher, Bigger, Magnanimous, that is beyond my understanding. In the first part, my mind matters. Here, I believe the more innocent and childlike you are, the more it works. When you simply believe that something out there loves you so much and is protecting you, it just works. For me, God is a feeling. Of infinite abundance, love, security, and beauty. And it’s growing more by the day. Grace. I believe each of us should live a life that seems bathed in divine light. Grace. I wish it upon you. Me. And every person in the world. Grace. I n the recent past, I have had some experiences which, in my eyes, seem incredible. Amazing. And absolutely beyond normal. You read them, and I will tell you what I think is happening. About a year ago, I had COVID. A particularly nasty attack at that. Body ache, inability to breathe, fever, chills, and a feeling of “I can’t take it!” I remember speaking to someone very close to me during this spell of illness. Someone very intuitive and wise. He called and said, “I just want to meditate with you.” I didn’t even have the energy to think. All I did was lie there and listen to his healing voice. He said to me, after being silent for a while, “You know, Megha, it’s strange, but it feels like your entire body is enveloped in a soft white light. No matter what is happening, grace is surrounding you, and it will carry you through.” With no medication, no doctor’s visits, and (thankfully) no hospital visits, within days, COVID slipped away from my system, like it never existed. Grace. I could feel its protection even through the toughest days. Though I felt ill, Grace told me I would be fine. Though it felt physically very intense, Grace told me I was protected. And I believed it. A few days ago, I forgot my suitcase in a taxi; it contained some very crucial documents and my laptop. I was about to get into a frenzied state as I did not have the driver’s number, and he had dropped me off about ten minutes before I realised I had forgotten it. Grace spoke. It told me, You will retrieve your bag. You will. Though nothing factually supported this assurance, with what I could only call a series of miracles, within thirty minutes, the taxi was traced and my bag retrieved. These are instances of protection. There have also been times when nothing has gone amiss or nothing was alarming, yet grace has just kept flowing, showing me a life of abundance. Project after project, opportunity after opportunity, beautiful relationships—almost as though I am a magnet drawing immense good to myself. Grace! I have no words from my conscious mind to explain why so much goes right. Why this protection. I am sure you feel it too. At times or all the time. What is this Grace, and what do we do to deserve it? And how does it become ours for the asking? I have realised that the more blessed I feel, the more blessings I draw into my life. So a part of attracting this grace seems to be in my control. Keeping myself in a state of gratitude, love, bliss, and a constant feeling of ‘I am so Gratitude for grace Megha Bajaj surrenders to the mystery of Grace, which has become a part of her day-to-day living experience 46 LifePositive | APRIL 2023
Flower Power 47 FLOWER-POWER Bouquet of Remedies Payal K Talwar shares how Bach flower therapy—a holistic and alternative modality that uses flower extracts—transformed her life.
The stress caused by my yearning for a child for many years, and the subsequent treatments I underwent, played havoc with my physical and mental health. My body was getting stiff and prone to constant spasms, rendering me immobile for days on end. What followed was pain and discomfort all over the body. The pain was getting unbearable, and so was the mental anguish. I was asked to leave an esteemed educational institution where I was working. Despite being in this condition, I pushed myself no end to prove myself as a citizen journalist; a few months after leaving my school job, I took up writing. On one hand, I was excited to see the bylines, and on the other, my health kept deteriorating. Running from pillar to post had become second nature. I had severe health challenges for which solutions were not forthcoming. I felt lost and disappointed. Around this time, about six years ago, my husband and I decided to shift residence. During the process, one early morning, my husband was helping me get out of bed to stand on my feet. As I walked in pain, with one hand interlocked in his and the other taking support of the walls, I saw myself in the mirror. My heart ached to see myself like that. After completing the morning chores, my hand habitually reached out for the box full of medication. I just kept staring at it, and I completely broke down. This time, I didn’t take them and told myself, Payal, you cannot continue taking this all your life, and you cannot enter your new house with this box. That was it! I threw all the medicines in the dustbin. I even told myself that, henceforth, I would be free of all side effects. Suddenly, after many years, something changed inside me. The will was in place, but the journey was far from being smooth. In the following years, I tried several alternative therapies. Nothing worked. I started to get disappointed again. I felt that my life was going nowhere in terms of my health as well as my career. I felt directionless. That’s when my friend enlightened me that there is a flower remedy which could guide me to my purpose. I decided to take a consultation and began to see subtle changes in my emotions, especially fear and panic, which I had developed over the years. And then, there was no looking back. I got so intrigued with this simple, subtle healing system that after six months of taking it, I thought it worthwhile to become a practitioner myself. Today, I am a Bach flower therapist and consultant who has positively influenced over 200 people. Power of Bach flower therapy As I delved deeper, inspired to learn everything that flower remedies offered, I realised why I behave the way I do: I was not approving of myself, and that made me push myself so much constantly. I understood my personality type and my sensitive nature. Slowly and steadily, I got a deeper understanding of emotions. This has now become a constant study that has taught me so much thanks to the scores of client cases that I have encountered over the past four years. I could also see why people behave in a certain way and what emotional state they are in, and that understanding has only made my life better and more fulfilling. Thanks to Bach flowers, my relationship with my spouse and close ones has grown deeper and has transformed me as a person. How do Bach flower remedies work? According to Edward Bach, the founder of Bach flower therapy, “The actions of certain 48 LifePositive | APRIL 2023

flowers, shrubs, and trees that grow in the wild raise our vibrations and open our channels for the reception of the Spiritual Self to flood our natures with the particular virtue we need and wash out from us the fault that is causing the harm. They cure not by attacking the disease but by flooding the bodies with the beautiful vibrations of higher nature, in the presence of which disease melts away as snow in the sunshine.” How does the therapist diagnose? Bach flowers treat emotions, and that’s what a therapist takes into account. For instance, a few days ago, my domestic help, Pragati Chauhan, was in tears after having argued with her sibling. Two days later, she had a headache and was coughing incessantly. I treated her after understanding her emotional state. By the next day, her cough had reduced considerably, and by the third day, she hugged me, exclaiming, “Thank you, Bhabhi, khansi gayaa (the cough has disappeared)!” In cases such as this one where the symptoms were recent, flower remedies work very quickly. Chronic issues usually take longer to heal, and you would need to take the remedy for a few weeks to experience its benefits. As for autoimmune conditions and even illnesses like cancer, Bach flowers help you deal with the emotional disturbances that accompany the condition. Fifty-five-year-old homemaker, Sapna Nagpal, whose life was on a downward spiral, took to Bach flowers and benefited immensely. “I had begun to realise that I was in an emotional trap where I felt disconnected completely from everything—cooking, watching television, etc. I had sleepless nights and felt I was going crazy. Counselling didn’t help much. Allopathy made me restless, and I felt drowsy most of the time. That’s when I reached out for a consultation. Within a few days, I started to get a hold of my life. After continuous treatment, I regained my motivation and started doing all the daily chores. Today, I am feeling good. During the course, I also wanted to address my claustrophobia, for which the remedies are currently helping me.” Ditto with Delhi-based lawyer, Mehak Bakshi (name changed), who feels that the flower remedies have introduced her to herself. She says, “I appeared bold and confident in front of people, but I felt very unconfident and confused inside. I had self-doubt. During my childhood, I had been surrounded by people who instructed me about what to do. I used to get hurt easily. That’s when a cousin recommended Bach flower remedies. Along with the remedies and constant handholding, I received an in-depth understanding of myself. I learnt how to draw boundaries, and I understood that I had a fear of rejection and self-acceptance. Today, I feel confident. I feel more connected with myself and have started taking responsibility for my actions rather than blaming others. Believe me, flower remedies work wonders as they work on the root of the issue.” Social activist Dipesh Tank agrees with what Mehak shared a n d adds, “In October 2020, my entire family, i n c l u d i n g me, was down with C O V I D .
