February 2017

LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 Š51Š form. This purity needs a pure heart and my powers, my angels, are guiding me to learn and achieve more and more. They also helped me discern my soul plan and are helping me in my journey of life. In conclusion, the Universe or God is ready to give us in abundance. What we need is faith and a strong belief in our own capacity. And of course, awareness of the powers of the subconscious mind. God has selected me for a good purpose on this planet. Through his blessings a few of us have started an organisation called Divine Dreams whose ambitious motto is to create heaven on earth, through holding motivational speeches, motivational training, and counselling. Our purpose is to spread awareness of positive thinking in society and to help transform it. I wonder now, if God had not given me that broken ankle, would any of this have come to pass? Truly, our biggest challenges contain our biggest gifts! to come to me. This capacity helped me sustain the trauma and find my way out. Dr. Mukesh Shah, Aalok Orthopaedic Hospital in Ahmedabad successfully operated on my ankle joint. One month after the surgery I was on my feet doing normal work without any support of the walker or a stick. However, I had to use an ankle belt and many actions were restricted for me. At that time I was only 23 years. I had so many responsibilities as a mother, a wife, a daughter-in law. As a civil engineer, I was also ambitious to build a successful career. However, the injury was limiting me severely and I began to give in to despondency. Self-pity kept me locked in the Whyme syndrome. Thankfully, this state did not last for too long. My inner self kept prompting me: “No, this is not the end of the world. You have to go a long journey. Your purpose on this earth is different.” My inner voice inspired me to read motivational books. I started gathering myself. Then my husband gifted me an enrolment to the Silva Mind Control Workshop conducted by Sri Jayesh Patel, as a birthday gift. It turned out to be the turning point of my life. It was here that I learnt about the subconscious mind and how to use its powers. I started getting tremendous results in all sectors. Miraculously, after successfully programming my mind, I can now do everything like a normal person without the support of the ankle belt. I can walk, run, dance, play the garba, and climb mountains. I have done all these things with ease. I broke through my self-pitying pattern as well. I understand that I was meant to go through this incident. It was destined to happen. With the power of my subconscious mind my finances, health, relationships, and spiritual upliftment started skyrocketing. I was also able to help my kids in their academic and curricular development, simply by going to the meditative Alpha level and communicating with them. Inevitably, I could see the effect of that subliminal communion in the physical world. I rarely need to physically pull them up or scold them for anything. By understanding the power of the subconscious mind, I have been able to help people around me in different ways by offering healing, counselling, and techniques to relax the mind. Having been brought up in a devout Jain family, I am both religious and spiritual. Because of my activated powers, the rituals I have practised since childhood are yielding results and I can feel positive vibrations at holy places and in the presence of holy saints. Now I also know what spirituality actually is. It is beyond customs and rituals. It is uplifting ourselves, our souls to their purest To read these articles online and post your comments, go to http://www.lifepositive.com/Magazine/Feb2016. Š52Š LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 S ervicing your gadgets is a must if you want them to work well. Cars, air conditioners, and other gadgets are cleaned from the outside as well as inside. Then why not service our bodies? We bathe, dress, put on makeup, care for our skin, hair and body from the surface but never think of cleaning/servicing our bodies from the inside. My ayurvedic doctor Hemang Parekh explained the benefits of detoxing the body both from the inside as well as outside, a concept that is radically different from the usual detox programmes which focus mainly on a diet plan such as consuming water, juice, Body detox An intense ayurvedic detox programme helped Meher Castelino get rid of excess fat, gain improved metabolism and plenty of fresh energy Coming clean Before After fruits, and lime for days. The Dynamic Detox programme at Ayushakti was a closely monitored one, suited to my particular needs and requirements. I had done it in 2014 and felt great (it should ideally be done once a year) but skipped it in 2015, due to time constraints (you need nearly 21 dedicated days) but did it once again in November 2016. A rude shock There is a time in one’s busy life when one eats everything that is on the table, gets lazy and does not care about what one puts into the body. This happened to me for the past two years, but a slight jolt woke me up from my slumber. Having kept my sugar level and cholesterol under control, I was rudely awakened in

LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 Š53Š chapattis, deep fried, left-over, readymade, tinned and microwave-cooked foods. Sweets, bread, biscuits, cakes, and chocolates too were deleted from the menu along with fermented foods like curd, idlis, dosas, cheese, and paneer. Salads and raw vegetables were also out and so were pulses like chick peas, dry mutter, rajmah, val and mataki dals, all non-vegetarian foods along with sour foods like lime, tamarind, vinegar and pickles. Tomato, cabbage, potato, cauliflower, brinjal and cucumber were also removed from the kitchen. This was as far as foods were concerned. When it came to overall lifestyle changes, the following were avoided – sun bathing, excessive travelling, thinking/talking too much, sleeping during the day, anger, and suppressing natural urges like urine and stool. What was recommended was a normal life and positive thinking. The treatments Two days before the treatments, I started taking before lunch and dinner, a quarter teaspoon of hingastak churna which stimulates the internal fire, and half-a-teaspoon of supachak churna after, as it helps digestion. Every night I had two vaca oil capsules before bedtime which keeps the vata normal. The first two days Meena, an expert therapist, started the siddha massage with a paste made from herbs, which was a great exfoliation for the skin, and dry pind swed hot pads, which contained herbs that help to absorb the paste into the full body. This stimulates the agni (digestion) and metabolism. All these are done on an empty stomach so I picked the 8.30 am slot. On the third day, besides the two treatments there was internal cleansing with bhedan basti (enema) after eating a little khichdi two hours before, for removing the blocks and air in the system. From the fourth day I was given a slim lotion massage with steam October when my last blood test showed a high fasting sugar and even a higher one post two hours after meal. My weight was a heavy 70 kgs and my clothes didn’t fit too well. My photos revealed a plump face and my energy level was low – climbing a few steps got me breathless. My first step was to start moving and stop gorging on chips, wafers, chocolates, ice-creams, sweets, lots of buttered toast and Punjabi samosas. I am a foodie so whenever I travelled, I loved to sample all the local dishes. But now it was time to battle the bulge. Out came my trusty Jane Fonda workout CDs and on October 20, 2016, I started a daily 90-minute regimen with almost regimental devotion seven days a week. Detox was the next step. Dr Parekh chalked out a programme especially suited to my needs and requirements. I wanted to bring down my sugar and cholesterol levels, lose weight and feel energetic. The favoured menu The 30-day detox plan started on November 2, 2016, when I prepared my body by going off sugar, milk and wheat (vegan diet). As per the detox plan I could eat any amount of rice and moong dal khichdi which has 70 per cent dal and 30 per cent rice cooked in cow’s ghee. I could add spices like cumin, coriander, fennel, saffron, black pepper, turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and all fresh herbs like coriander, garlic, onions and ginger. Asafoetida, which reduces vata (air) was added to combat the gaseousness caused by moong dal. I ate vegetables like bottle gourd, padval, ridge gourd (turai), tindli, fenugreek, palak, carrots, capsicums, French beans, fresh green peas, white and red pumpkin, bitter gourd, and okra. Papaya was the only fruit allowed to me since it cleanses the system. For snacks I ate puffed rice and for sugar cravings, jaggery. Green, herbal or black teas along with soups were a favourite of mine. I never felt hungry since I could eat as much as I wanted of the above foods. Taboo foods Certain foods were prohibited since they produce toxins and affect the three doshas namely vata, pitta and kapha. So I stayed away from milk, coffee, all rotis and Not received a copy of your favourite magazine? Š54Š LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 for external oiling, while three types of Grut (oils with medicines) were to be taken in the morning and before bedtime, for lubricating the inner channels and helping the toxins move to a single place in the stomach. On the fourth and fifth days the regimen changed to two teaspoons of each grut in the morning and one teaspoon each at night. On the fifth day I also underwent slim lotion massage with steam and bhedan basti; on the sixth day I was given an oil massage, steam with three teaspoons of each of the three gruts in the morning, and two teaspoons in the night. The seventh day included oil massage and steam with four teaspoons of gruts in the morning and two teaspoons at night. For the eighth day it was an oil massage, steam and bhedan basti but no gruts in the morning or night. The detox day The ninth day was the all-important detox day for which I had prepared for the last eight days. I started at eight am from home after having followed prescribed rules like no treatment, yoga, or talking, no cell phone, TV, computer, reading, or afternoon sleeping. On an empty stomach I powdered 10 Virechan and two Virechan Plus tablets and swallowed them with water. A flask of warm water, black tea and ginger tea was ready which I had to drink after every visit to the washroom. Through the day I was on SMS with Dr Parekh who was monitoring my progress. After 10 visits to the wash room and several cups of the warm water, black and ginger tea, I realised there were no toxins left. After 30 minutes, I took two gasmukti tablets and 15 minutes later had some watery khichdi. After some more visits to the washroom and a few stomach cramps which were quickly relieved by drinking a cup of jeera tea, I rested. Post detox treatments The 10th day was for resting but from the 11th day I had to undergo anuvasan basti after eating khichdi. This is a nourishing basti and has to be kept inside for one to nine hours and I could only eat after three hours of the process. On the 12th day I was given niruh basti on an empty stomach, which is a deeper level of cleansing and comes out within five to 15 minutes. The next few days were alternated between slim lotion, dry pind swed for the full body and oil massages along with steam and bhedan basti. The final result was a drop in weight from 70 kgs to 65 kgs; my measurements dropped from one to three inches in various parts of the body, making me feel lighter and more energetic. The follow-up programme As a follow-up programme all fermented foods, sour dishes and chapattis of rice, jowar, bajra, dals of channa, masoor and vegetables and fruits like radish, orange and mosambi were prohibited. I could have nachni flour along with soya milk, and chunk sand tofu. All other fruits were allowed within limits. Coconut milk and water were welcome additions and for that sweet tooth jaggery was permitted. In nuts _ cashews and peanuts were out, while almonds and walnuts could be had. I could have bhel and paani puri without the sour chutneys. You realise the changes only after you have undergone the full treatment. There is a glow on my cheeks, twinkle in my eyes, lightness in my steps and body and a general sense of well-being which I don't think I could have enjoyed had I not gone for the intensive cleansing treatment. I look forward to a fantastic 2017! Ayurvedic lotions and potions for optimum well-being To read these articles online and post your comments, go to http:// www.lifepositive.com/Magazine/Feb2017. LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 Š55Š Sharing your space Worshipping the home goddess While reading an article by a foreigner travelling in India, I was struck by her description of the fragrances that floated out of different houses and places of worship in the evening, irrespective of which religion they belonged to. In temples, the performer of the aarti starts by cleaning the idol, removing old flowers, redecorating the idol with fresh flowers or ornaments, and sometimes changing the garment too. Then he lights the diya, and a few incense sticks, offers prasad as per the taste of the deity, and with the diya in his right hand and the ringing bell in his left, starts singing and praising the deity’s physical beauty, strength and powers that bestow health, wealth, and happiness on its followers. After the aarti is over, one can actually feel the difference in the atmosphere; as if the gods are pleased, have accepted your prayers and answered them too. What if we performed this ritual in our daily life for our near and dear ones too? Men could do the aarti for their wives, who have always yearned for their attention and appreciation, and justifiably so since they are the fulcrum of the family. On such occasions, maybe once or twice a month, he could get her new clothes, and jewellery, which could be real gold, artificial or made of flowers; the house can be decorated with flowers and diyas, soft romantic music can be played in the background and food of her liking can be cooked or ordered from outside. During the aarti he could extol her virtues, appreciate all that she does for everyone, acknowledge her physical beauty, and inner beauty. He could also express his love for her, which gets buried under the regular stresses of life, even asking for forgiveness for any mistake and promising to be more caring, loving, and supportive in the future. Once the aarti is over, and the goddess is overjoyed, imagine the atmosphere in the room. It will be greater than any kind of bliss, and by making one human being so happy, loved and appreciated, you actually make God happy. And last but not the very least, do not forget the ‘donation box’—the fatter the envelope, the better. Nirmal Minawala, Mumbai

Š60Š LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 S o many things coalesce to make a ‘good year’, which in my book is defined as a year that provides plenty of opportunities to rejoice, learn and rebuild where necessary, celebrate triumphs, recognise a series of moments that may, by themselves, be ordinary, but when pooled together, leave you with a satisfied sigh at the end of the year. I had a pretty good 2016, but bringing it to its very end on 31st December, spending some hours with my husband and daughter, sharing our favourite ‘music memories’ was most certainly the high point of my year. We sang loudly and in unison, surprising ourselves when we remembered all the lyrics, Mind inspiration With their powerful ability to open our hearts, songs can help us express our pain and joy, soothe our hurt, or proclaim our credo. No wonder everyone has a playlist they listen to when in need of comfort, strength, or cheer, says Mamlu Chatterjee What’s your song? drumbeats and even the shimmies in between! It emphatically brought home how music impacts our mood, and thereby, our lives altogether. When someone recently asked me if I have a song/ poem that lifts me whenever I listen to it, I didn’t have to think too hard. I have my little collection of these and have always hummed them to myself if they weren’t playing loudly already. Every time I hear The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow from the musical, Annie, it just puts things in perspective for me. Yep, nothing is going to come to a standstill; life will carry on and the dark days will become history soon enough! Another one was from the film, Guddi, that I had watched while I was still in school – and it made an impact on me that guides me till today. Here was Jaya Bachchan (Bhaduri in those days) in a school uniform, Photo: Thinkstock find your song.indd 60 ind your song.indd 60 1/18/2017 11:32:44 AM /18/2017 11:32:44 AM

LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 Š61Š about music and its way of finding you at just the right moment yielded a lot of results. Out of mammoth essays and research papers on the subject that showed up on Google, written by musicians, therapists, angsty teens, theology professors, life coaches and several others, the one common fact that emerged was that, yes, music can alter and elevate our life state when we are low/sad/disappointed, in a way nothing else can; almost everyone has a special ‘song’ or ‘chant’ or ‘hymn’ or ‘poem’ that they turn to when in times of trouble. Music taps into the hippocampus, the prefrontal cortex and the parietal lobe, all of which are the areas of the brain that deal with emotions and mood. The hippocampus is also responsible for consolidation of new memories whereas the prefrontal cortex manages extreme impulses and emotions, enabling us to make acceptable decisions and keeping inappropriate behavior at bay. Perhaps this is why experts often utilise music when they treat anxious or depressed patients. Music has been used even for stroke and Alzheimer victims in an effort to remind them of happier times, by association. Researchers from Penn State University conducted a study whose results showed that hair tightly plaited in loops, earnestly singing Hum ko Mann Ki Shakti Dena at assembly; the song says we need to win over ourselves first, before we can win over anyone else and this resonates with me till today. A few days ago, imagine my delight when my sister-inlaw, Shikha Tuli, principal of an international school in Singapore, confessed that her ‘go-to’ song whenever she faced an impasse, was My Favourite Things from The Sound of Music! Recently, I chanced upon a delightful video that showed a group of teenaged children in all shapes and sizes and colours, joyously singing, the Simon and Garfunkel number, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, in perfect harmony; I stopped everything else and watched the video once, twice, thrice, not because they sang wonderfully (they did, indeed), not because they sang with their entire bodies, eyes, hands, heads moving in rhythm (though that was mesmerizing), but also because this was another song I have often turned to, since my teenaged years, whenever I was upset/dejected or off kilter in any way. This was a performance by Young People’s Chorus of New York City and you can find them on Facebook by following this link: https://www.facebook.com /ypcofnyc/?hc_ ref=NEWSFEED&fref=nf The mood changer Speaking to friends and looking for more information find your song.indd 61 ind your song.indd 61 1/18/2017 11:32:45 AM /18/2017 11:32:45 AM

Š62Š LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 students who listened to music reported feeling more optimistic, relaxed and joyful than those who did not. While soothing music and classical masterpieces by Mozart or Beethoven would be most often recommended, research shows that even rock or pop music could yield the same results depending on personal preferences. Another study by experts from the University of Missouri succeeded in proving that music is monumental in mood improvement, impacting health, behavior, relationships and even income! Of course we know there are people who wallow in ‘sad’ music as well, particularly youngsters or those nursing broken hearts, but canny Life Coach Rebecca Chesin suggests making a playlist, starting with those songs that capture the ‘down’ moods, gradually leading up to those that ‘lift’ them! Security blanket Ask anybody, and chances are they will have a song/poem/hymn that they associate with their childhood, perhaps because it reminds them of their parents; two of my best friends from school spoke eloquently about a song and chant that never fail to lift their spirits. Anuja Gupta, founder and executive director of Rahi Foundation (a centre for the prevention and healing of Incest /CSA) spoke of memories of her mother singing, Nanhi kali sone chali, hawa dheere aana, from the 1959 film Sujata, as she patted her to sleep every night. Till date, whenever she is agitated or worried about something, just listening to this song calms her down, and gives her the sense that everything will be all right. Madhu Mahajan Gupta, my other friend, an independent food & beverages professional based out of Hong Kong, shared that listening to the Hanuman Chalisa fills her with a sense of security and serenity that is hard to come by in the daily hustle bustle of urban life in a fast moving metro. It was, she explained, something her father had introduced her to, when she was little and even today, when she plays it in her car as she goes about her chores, she feels safe and protected, just the way she felt as she skipped along holding her father’s finger on a crowded street as a little girl. That the Hanuman Chalisa features strongly on the list of songs/hymns/ chants that give strength and courage, became evident when I went for an Annual Day function for Manovikas Kendra, a School for Specially Abled Children. There were more that 200 children, four to six years old, on the stage performing a specially choreographed piece dressed as tiny ‘Hanumans’ exemplifying devotion, courage and strength while the backdrop portrayed myriad scenes from the Ramayana depicting Hanuman’s wisdom and virtues. Talented and prolific artist, Nina Das, also has a favourite song that she returns to every time she faces disappointment; Que Sera Sera, the song immortalised by Doris Day, reminds her that whatever will be, will be and that one should enjoy the moment without worrying too much about the future! Jayashree Jain, an actor friend whose energy and charm has always been an inspiration to us, shared her ‘song’ with me and I was not surprised when I heard it, because it appeared to be the very motto of her life! It was a ghazal that went Ay gardishein haalaat, mujhse nahak na ulajh – maine toh har surat mein jeene ki kasam khai hai. Roughly translated, this would mean ‘Oh tough times, don’t waste your time on me for I have vowed to live under any circumstances’. I could almost see Jayshree’s eyes crinkle and her cheeky smile illuminate her face as she read out these lines, looking back at a million hurdles that she had leapt over, only to emerge more buoyant than ever before! Right notes Amita Prasad, vice principal of one of the leading schools in Calcutta, passionate about working with high school students (little wonder she was voted ‘Best Teacher in the World” on FM Radio on Teacher’s Day), Que Sera Sera by Doris Day lifts Nina Das out of disappointments and dejection find your song.indd 62 ind your song.indd 62 1/18/2017 11:32:46 AM /18/2017 11:32:46 AM

Mail us at [email protected] confessed that the song that keeps her going when she feels overwhelmed or lonely, is one from her youth, You’ve Got a Friend, by Carole King; listening to the beautiful lyrics make her feel she was not alone and that the dark clouds would soon pass to reveal the clear skies hiding behind them. Anjana Dutt, graphic artist and emerging fantasy fiction writer, finds these lines from Shelley’s Ode to a Skylark resonate with her as she believes they help her to create beauty: “We look before and after And pine for what is not Our sincerest laughter With some pain is fraught Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought.” She says, “Why do I think of these lines in particular? Perhaps because my best work (poetry/art) is created when I am sad. And in the creation I find my happiness.” Anchita Ghatak, a women’s rights activist, and a development professional, says, “I work on issues of women's rights and gender equality and have many moments of doubt, unhappiness and despair. Maya Angelou's poem, Still I Rise, provides inspiration, laughter and courage.” She also says that Lewis Carroll, Sukumar Ray and Ogden Nash never fail to cheer her up. Shampa Chowdhury, a counsellor with several years of experience in the field, admits she has used her ‘go-to’ song, I Have Confidence from the film, The Sound of Music, to boost/empower several students suffering from exam anxiety, relationship issues or plain nervousness at the prospect of going out into the big bad world, always with excellent results. Tagore’s songs feature very often in this list of songs that uplift, give succour, encourage, inspire, motivate; almost every third person I spoke to had a favourite Tagore song that they plugged into when they were at their lowest ebb. Perhaps one that has universal appeal is Prano Bhoriye Trisha Horiye, a magnificent song that speaks of surrender, where the poet asks for more life, more opportunities to dedicate the self to the higher being; pleading for more troubles so he may never forget that he is a mere human, more love in his heart so that his ego is subdued; more light so his eyes may see beyond doors and walls. This is a song that brings home beautifully that only in faith lies true joy. So what is the power a song wields over our emotions? They trigger an emotional response, often bringing up cherished memories; their lyrics, their melodies soothing, energising, rousing, bringing hope and healing to us. The world over, babies are sung to, teenagers express themselves through song, and the elderly have music as their companion through their sunset years; an intrinsic part of our lives, we have the ability to remember lyrics from hundreds of songs we have learnt, pulling out appropriate ones at required moments. Hell, we even fall in love thanks to a song! Ask any couple if they have a special song and at least six out of 10 will share ‘their’ song with you in a heartbeat. In the film, Before We Go, an old psychic tells a young man and woman, stranded in New York city for a night, about finding the love of his life, one evening at a bar; she walked up to him as the Juke Box played Moon River, practically dragging him to the dance floor despite the fact that he had no clue how to dance. With a deep sigh the old man says, “I’d have made an absolute fool of myself just to spend one minute with her. And I did. And it all started with a song.” So, have you found your song? Š66Š LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 I was visiting a friend's house in Bengaluru last year. Both she and her husband are left-brained, IIT graduates given to rational thinking. So when I started a discussion on spiritual subjects they asked, "Do spirits exist?" Keeping in mind their logical bent of mind, I replied, “The spirit form is our actual form. It is the body which is temporary. Therefore, we are more unreal than the spirits.” Once this understanding set in, the remaining conversation became a song. Interestingly, around then a healer friend of mine was also coming across cases of spirit possession while healing her clients. If spirits Spirit possession Many a physical ailment can be healed faster if we released the person of attached spirits that may have taken accommodation in his body because of a weak aura or an untoward incident, says Shivi Verma Freedom from possession exist, it follows logically that spirit possession can also exist. Certainly, I cannot deny their existence because of my personal experiences in this zone. Fuelled by a single-minded obsession to find God, and without a legitimate guide to help me navigate this unchartered territory, I would experiment with anything and everything that came my way. As a result I landed in quite a few pitfalls and trenches. I realised that something was amiss, only when I began hearing strange noises which only I could hear, and which definitely weren't encouraging, to say the least. Sometimes they could get deafening, and no matter where I ran, they would follow me. My troubles ended in 2009, when I resolutely visited the shrine of Shirdi Sai Baba against tremendous odds and surrendered my probexorcism.indd 66 xorcism.indd 66 1/17/2017 4:34:52 PM /17/2017 4:34:52 PM

LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 Š67Š India, “The spirit has an electric and magnetic field just like humans and animals, which can be measured by a ghost-o-meter, lecher antenna, or a dowsing rod." Jyotika Chhibbar, a Mumbai-based psychicintuitive medium, therapist and founder of The Light of Life institute, underwent a unique experience vis-a vis spirit possession. A lady, Suparna Dey, called Jyotika from Kolkata on September 28, 2015. She wanted to communicate with her recently deceased young daughter called Srishti and find out if she had any message to convey to her family, and if she had any unfulfilled desires. Jyotika connected with Srishti’s soul the next day. The reading was completed and Suparna’s son Tathagat ended the call with a request to pass on Srishti’s message as and when she conveyed one. Srishti continued to stay with Jyotika a little longer because in her she found a deeply empathetic soul who was moved by the passing away of a girl so young. Jyotika also felt bad for Srishti’s surviving family members consisting of a paralysed father, a struggling mother and her son. Srishti told Jyotika that she liked her pink toe nails and also confided in her about her boyfriend. Strangely, Jyotika's life began changing from lems to Him. Ever since the strange happenings that surrounded me, stopped. I was no longer possessed. But I thank God for that experience. Without it I would never have considered the possibility of spirit possession. Like many others I would have dismissed it as a psychological disorder, and compelled a victim to stay in misery instead of considering an alternative way of treatment. Not every sickness or crime can be attributed to spirit possession, but when looking to resolve a complicated issue there is no harm in checking out for this angle too, so that the patient can recover more quickly and completely. What is spirit possession? Says Anshoo Srivastava, a past-life regression therapist from Benguluru, and founder of Reborn, a holistic healing centre, "Souls reincarnate to learn certain karmic lessons on earth, and at a predetermined time leave the body and go back to the spirit world. But unfulfilled desires, the family’s attachment to them, a brutal or sudden death which they are unable to reconcile with, may stop the soul from moving on to the spirit world. Such marooned souls may possess another living human being who is at the same emotional/mental/ physical frequency as theirs." Research in this field has become so advanced that there are now gadgets to detect the presence of spirits or tramp souls in an environment. Says Anu Mehta, master trainer of Meta Health in exorcism.indd 67 xorcism.indd 67 1/17/2017 4:34:53 PM /17/2017 4:34:53 PM

Š68Š LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 the next morning. Her left foot swelled up and she developed a nasty headache. By 11 am she was vomiting profusely and by evening was collapsing. The doctor discovered that her BP had shot up beyond imagination. He called for an ambulance, since she could get paralysed or slip into a coma. Jyotika began screaming, “I will die in the ambulance itself, doctor. I will die on the way.” The ambulance reached the hospital carrying her with an oxygen mask, but was directed to a more advanced one at the gate itself, as the hospital lacked an ICCU, which the patient was in urgent need of. By then, the BP had skyrocketed even higher. Within minutes she was surrounded by a network of choking cables making it difficult for her to breathe. The doctors checked the BP once more. To their utter disbelief, it was normal this time. Astonishingly, the treatment had yet to begin. The entire night and the next day, Jyotika went through a series of investigation and medical tests but nothing could be diagnosed. Consequently, she was discharged late that evening. On her way home, Jyotika saw Srishti's soul stand before her again and smile. The fact that she had felt sorry for Srishti and her family members had made her pick Srishti’s energy that was yet to be released from the earthly realm. On returning home she had a conversation with Suparna who told her the following things. • Srishti’s favourite colour was pink and she was fond of nail polish • She too was shifted from one hospital to another • Her soul had left her body while in the ambulance, which explained Jyotika's fear of dying in the ambulance • She also had gone through a series of investigations and tests which did not reveal any ailment. Jyotika later set up an appointment to release Srishti's soul and help her attain bliss finally. Says she, “I believe that even though I was capable of avoiding this possession, this happened so Srishti could convey to her parents her need for release from the earthly realm, which otherwise would not have happened because of their deep attachment to her soul.” Who is vulnerable? Some healers feel that all of us are prone to possession since we are pervious energetic beings, always busy exchanging energy from our surroundings. Says Jyotika, “So commonplace is this phenomenon that more than 95 per cent of us absorb alien energies at any given point, but we aren't even aware since most may not cause any violent symptoms. Headaches, stomach aches, mood swings, infections, fevers, fatigue, can be caused by such energies.” Others beg to differ. Meta healer, Anu Mehta, says, “Everything has a reason. Entities are exactly like viruses and bacteria in the environment. If your immunity is strong you will not catch them. You will get affected only if your immune system is weak. You will attract possession only if you are weak and susceptible mentally or emotionally.” She adds, “If you can effectively handle your life situations, even if you are in a room full of spirits you will not get possessed, and on the other hand you can be in the most positive environment and still get possessed if your aura is weak.” Empaths are also vulnerable because their natural empathy creates porous and poor boundaries. According to Anu, possession does not give us the right to write off responsibility for our actions: “An entity will enter your body and make you do harmful things only if you already have such thoughts in your mind. So instead of blaming the spirit, introspect to detect what kind of thoughts you harboured to attract such a spirit." Symptoms of possession Therapists outline a few symptoms which include feeling extremely exhausted or fatigued most of the time, sudden onset of irritability without any reason, chronic illness, alcohol or drug dependence, mood swings for no reason, sudden behavioural or personality change, speaking or doing things which do not match the person's real personality, getting angry for no reason, bizarre dreams, feeling heavy all the time, having a negative approach towards life, feeling futile and disappointed most of the time, horrible dreams, increased appetite, weight gain, sleeping more, moving pain in the body, a sudden onset of anxiety or bouts of depression, a lot of uneasiness near full moon or no moon. Difference from mental illness Though most symptoms of possession match those of mental illness, healers point out certain telltale signs that are indicative of spirit possession. Says Anshoo Srivastava, “In mental diseases like schizophrenia, psychosis mood disorders, psychosis depression, psychosis mania, patients have delusions and hallucinations. They start hearing, seeing or sensing things without a stimulus to cause them." She says, "This happens in cases of spirit possession also; however, there is a thin line of difference. In spirit possession physical changes such as weight gain, weight loss, and change in eating habits are also observed.” Says Anjana Barot, occupational therapist and clinical hypnotherapist from Mumbai, “Mental illness can be exorcism.indd 68 xorcism.indd 68 1/17/2017 4:34:53 PM /17/2017 4:34:53 PM

Mail us at [email protected] treated most of the times with counselling and medications. The symptoms are trait specific, while a possessed person would behave the same even after being treated medically. In fact, entity possession can push someone into a mental illness." Therefore, it is advisable to take a patient to a psychiatrist or counsellor first in order to be sure. Only if you find no change in the symptoms after treatments and medications, should you consider going for a spirit healing session. How to heal from spirit possession Thankfully, there are reliable, safe and scientific ways to get rid of spirit possession through certified healers and therapists. Techniques like hypnotherapy, advanced clearing energetics, entity clearing through access bars, Prana Violet Healing (see page 36) and prayers are ways to heal a person from spirit possession. Says Anshoo, “In hypnotherapy we take the client into a deep trance and connect to their subconscious mind. With the help of certain request-based questions we identify the location of the spirit and try to establish a communication with it. Once it is done we try to find the reason why the spirit has possessed the patient and if it has any unfulfilled desire. The patient strives to fulfil it, which is then communicated to the spirit with a request to leave the patient. Then we help the spirit to move into the spirit world. The whole process works on the basis of a request. Spirit possession happens to protect us and teach us something. Once we learn what we need to learn from the spirit and it gets its completion, it will leave you and go." Recounting a healing session, Anu Mehta says, "Once a young man suffering from intense acne had come to me for consultation. After therapy one side of his face cleared up, but the other did not. As I took him deeper into a trance he started behaving like a six-year-old boy, bawling, crying, and rolling on the floor. He related the trauma of being locked up in the toilet by his parents for a whole night as punishment for being mischievous as a young boy, and the fright and horror he had felt at being alone. At that moment an attached spirit admitted that it had felt deep empathy for the boy, and had entered him to give help and solace. Since the spirit was that of a weak and submissive man, the boy too showed diffidence and shyness in his general behaviour. I explained to the spirit that the boy was no longer a child, and that his presence was doing more harm than good, because his actual personality was getting overshadowed by him. As soon as the spirit understood it, it left the young man. Immediately, he got up from the floor and looked a totally different person. He looked bold, cheerful and happy and had no memory of what had happened earlier.” Shielding from spirit possession Prevention is always better than cure. It is advisable to seal our aura before stepping out of our homes. When done on a regular basis it can up our confidence and energy level considerably, and shield us from unsolicited energy assaults. Jyotika recommends a few measures. "Visualise a gentle violet flame lit within the centre of your body and spreading within and around. Next imagine yourself getting filled with silvery, pearly, peaceful white light, letting it spread into your aura and finally sealing it with the most powerful crystal available in the universe. You must affirm that only positivity will enter this shield and everything else will go back to its sender or wherever it has come from, after being converted into positivity through God's love and light. Crystals like black tourmaline, labradorite, blue kyanite, tiger's eye are useful in protecting your aura. Drinking water kept in a glass tumbler and charged with Rose Quartz elixir at night and in the morning, creates an internal environment of self-love and peace." Using the Bach Flower Remedies such as Crab Apple in the bath along with crystalline sea salt or Pakistani rock salt are also helpful. As souls on a human journey we have the choice to create our reality through the thoughts we think, deeds we do, and feelings we nurture. The loftier our thoughts and ideals, the higher the beings we will attract to aid us in our growth, and the lower our thoughts and vibrations, the lesser the beings we will draw to ourselves. Often many possessions are karmic in nature. You might become a victim of the evil eye or black magic without ever having done anything to attract it to yourself. In such cases, the attack simply is fulfilling the purpose of slowing you down, to help you in pacing and going deeper within yourself. It is also a question of balancing karmic equations. Because along with the victim the near ones also suffer due to the intensity of pain. But once awakening happens even in one person, and hands go up in prayer in search for a solution, doors open, help arrives and greater realisations are achieved. It is easy to blame a foreign spirit for your upheavals, but a wiser move would be to do a self-assessment and look within to find the emotional reasons responsible for such incidents. exorcism.indd 69 xorcism.indd 69 1/17/2017 4:34:53 PM /17/2017 4:34:53 PM

Š70Š LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 Positive Focus Project India Dr Ashutosh Karnatak Indian Energy Scenario: Indian energy basket is primarily coal, oil and gas. 70 percent of the oil demand is being met through the imports of crude and petroleum products at an approximate net import cost of Rs. 5,26,500. Presently around 570 government sector projects (costing Rs. 150 crores or more) are under execution out of which around 250 projects are overshooting in time and thereby leading to a cost overrun of approximately Rs. 1,42,000 crores. If 30 per cent of the cost overrun in government sector projects could be controlled by better project management practices, the growth in net oil import cost is recovered. The time overrun has two impacts: 1) The project will not be able to generate revenue for which it had been conceived. 2) Time overrun may lead to cost overrun, which has to be borne by the client impacting the viability of the project. The way forward: Roots of these concerns in execution can be tracked down to lack of adequate project management education during academic life of the project personnel. Further, the existing academic system scarcely covers other important aspects such as time management, stress management, and conflict resolution skills which are highly essential while handling projects. Project Management if taught from the right age (from Vth - VIth standard), will develop positive attitude; rational thinking abilities; essential skills such as time management, decision making and right reflexes while facing realistic situations. This education will be beneficial to: • Client personnel involved in projects • Students and family members • Contractors • MPs / MLAs / Block pramukhs The above is possible only when there is a movement of “projectization of India”,which is possible only when the knowledge of project management is disseminated at all the levels. Mission Project India Project Management education should be introduced from Vth Standard onwards. It should also be introduced as a specialisation in Bachelor’s degree where one can get degree as Bachelor in Project Management (BPM)– this will enhance the employment options of the individual in comparison to other streams. Against an estimated requirement of five lakh skilled Project Managers in India, there are only 30000 presently and this gap is expected to grow further in the coming years. A breakthrough technique Arjuna-MC4E2 (e) is a technique, wherein the project manager is required to take care of the aspects as mentioned below for successful execution of Projects. Arjuna-MC4E2 (e) is a good Monitoring and Controlling technique. The letters stand for: M - Milestone monitoring C - Constraint monitoring C - Commitment monitoring C - Change monitoring C - Cost monitoring E - Exception monitoring E - Early warning monitoring e- Educational requirements In brief the technique can be explained as below: • Before beginning a project, chalk out the detailed project schedule, which is to be agreed by the client, consultant and the contractors. • Each activity in the schedule is to be split into number of milestones. • All these milestones are to be periodically reviewed. • In case any milestone is not achieved, constraints behind such variation are to be identified so that they are resolved at the earliest. • For resolving these constraints and to achieve the milestones, clear responsibility needs to be allocated and their commitment needs to be recorded. +91-22-66781486 / 87, www.aromatreasures.com positive focus.indd 70 ositive focus.indd 70 1/17/2017 5:44:25 PM /17/2017 5:44:25 PM

Š72Š LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 L ife strews clues for us everywhere, through a forward you might have received, through something a friend said, a sentence in a book, or spoken by a facilitator at a workshop. A few months back, I had attended a workshop conducted by Manoj Lekhi, head of the Mumbai branch of Siddha Samadhi Yoga, the organisation founded by the late Rishi Prabhakar. What I carried away with me were two short, sharp words: ‘So what?’ Manoj had asked us to use these words whenever our expectations of others were belied. So what if X did not invite me to her party? I started using the phrase at the workshop itself and to my delight I found it to be a catchall that could help me defuse any state of mind. Moment to moment I would go, “So what if I am angry with someone. And so what if I am resisting the anger?” I would also add, “All the more reason to focus on the moment, their happiness and my growth.” Or “So what if I am feeling sleepy, hungry, slow, jealous. So what if my mind is on overdrive and so what I resist it?” Instantly, I would find myself springing back to the present moment, and the emotion would have largely dissolved. If not, a few more repetitions of this mantra would restore me back to tranquillity. ‘So what’ cuts our drama down to size. First of all it helps us acknowledge the problem instead of being in its thrall. It also reminds us that our emotions usually make much ado about nothing, and that we should lose as little time as possible in indulging them. And that the important thing is to do something about our situaSpirit column So what? The use of these two short sharp words has helped Suma Varughese shrug off her emotional baggage and rest peacefully in the moment tion instead of brooding about them. So what if I have a headache or that I resist it? So what if my stomach feels bloated or heavy or that I resist that? I have spent the larger part of my life being in the thrall of emotions. Moreover, resistance to these emotions was so powerful that I could hardly ever break past them to the zone of doing something about them. Fear and resistance to fear. Guilt and resistance to guilt. These heavy emotions were particularly hard for me to accept, and kept me in a state of stasis. ‘So what’ has helped me cut through all that flab. Everyday, it is restoring more and more of my natural vigour and energy. I am no longer as swaddled by resistance as I used to be. And if I am, a couple of rounds of ‘So what’, settles it. Over dint of time, the use of the phrase has worn away considerable emotional baggage and left me light and unfettered. It has also moved me closer and closer to the realisation that ultimately nothing is a big deal. The author of Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, Richard Carlson, had concluded, “It’s all small stuff.” That is what I am realising today. My stomach problems are small stuff, my respiratory problems are small stuff, my sleep issue is small stuff, putting on or losing weight is small stuff, almost anything is small stuff. What an amazing realisation for one who has almost always hyper ventilated about her life situations. Could I be on my way to becoming calm and composed? Whew, looks like it and high time too! LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 Š77Š Agoldsmith takes a piece of gold, and gives it a newer, more beautiful shape. The former gold shape that disappears, and the new one that appears stand for the changeful, visible forms or bodies assumed by Reality. Gold stands for Reality – which was never born, and which will never die. This Reality is not a soul hiding somewhere in your body – it is the all-pervading content in all bodies. The visible form of a gold piece may be altered any number of times without altering its inner content. Likewise, in reincarnation, the same Self-Reality endures forever, while the older forms assumed become transformed into newer ones. This change of form happens because of the inner creative urge for becoming inherent in Reality – that urge is called karma in the Bhagavad Gita.” This is a typical commentary on a passage from the Upanishads by the author, Swami Muni Narayana Prasad. He is the head of Narayana Gurukula, a guru-disciple foundation that is open to all people. The notions of karma and reincarnation are inherent in many Eastern spiritual traditions. According to several schools of these spiritual teachings, the goal of life, for ordinary mortals, is to be mindful of their karmic inheritance (from previous lives) in such a way as to eventually set themselves free from an endless cycle of rebirths. Many of the scriptural stories hint at a Reality that manifests itself as a multiplicity of forms – specifically as human forms in the flesh – that appears at some point as a birth, and seemingly disappears at another point as a death. What is mysterious to most “unenlightened” human beings, however, is the nature of this Reality. What ordinary mortals wish to know is whether there is such a thing as an afterlife, and whether the manifestation of Reality (called atman or soul or spirit or some other name) will be reincarnated in some other body. And is this Reality personal to each one of us, or is there just one common universal Reality (or Brahman, according to the discourses on Vedanta) that manifests in numerous forms? This treatise is a lucid guide (in nine chapters) for those who seek to explore the (often esoteric) explanations of karma and reincarnation in various scriptures. In the concluding chapter, the author brings together the threads from his various explorations in the book’s earlier chapters. He asserts that the ultimate Reality is the same for both ajnanis (those who have no direct knowledge of Reality) and jnanis (the “enlightened” ones who know Reality directly). Only ajnanis mistake “the ever changing appearances of the physical world for Reality.” In contrast, jnanis do not see themselves as separated from the one common universal Reality, and they live untroubled lives, aware that ”I am the Reality which was never born and which will never die.” - TA Balasubrramanian Exploring the ultimate reality Karma and Reincarnation (Contemporary researches in Hindu Philosophy & Religion) Muni Narayana Prasad D K Printworld, Paperback, ` 140; 108 pages Revelations books

Š78Š LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 Reading Carl Vernon's Anxiety Rebalance made me fervently wonder why I hadn't picked it up earlier. This book traces his lifelong journey with anxiety and depression and eventual triumph over it, and would have helped me enormously in solacing a friend of mine on a similar journey. A step-by-step guide to dealing with anxiety and depression, it draws its light from the author's own experience of them. Vernon starts by narrating instances from his childhood and youth which were marked by anxiety and panic attacks, and how by suppressing them for over 15 years, he finally had a breakdown – a feeling of utter panic brought on by the fear that he was going to die. This honest description of the way an anxiety or panic attack not only makes the reader empathise with those who go through such poignant suffering, but also gives them an acute understanding of the intensity of these afflictions. The book is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, Vernon exposes 'anxiety' for what it is – mere projections of limiting self beliefs. In his own case, a trip to the supermarket would trigger a panic attack. But the more he refrained from going to the supermarket, the more powerfully did the correlation between supermarket and panic attack get entrenched in his brain, eventually causing him to fear stepping out of his home. “My extended abuse of the flight or fight system and constant 'what-if...' thoughts inevitably resulted in my being trapped in a fear cycle. I was living inside the fear cycle, and feared the fear,” he writes. Vernon outlines a 'rebalance scale' consisting of seven levels. Level one starts with sleep, when the victim has little energy for anything else, followed by low energy, and below normal energy. Balance is achieved at level four, which is a state of normal energy, followed by above normal energy, high anxiety and panic. He explains these levels in detail, citing corresponding instances from his life. For instance, during the 15 torturous years of his life, he was frantically paddling, as if underwater, to hold things together. From this, he plunged into the extreme level of depression, represented by almost 16 hours of sleep a day. “In the few hours I was awake, anxiety had a way of sucking any remaining bit of life out of me,” he writes. It was only when he sat down and rationalised that a panic attack was nothing more than thoughts projected into feelings, that he could begin to overcome his anxiety. The undercurrent of his thesis is that anxiety and depression can be overcome, if one is not continually trying to wish them away, but sits with them and tries to peel away the multiple layers of fears and debilitating thoughts. Written in a simple, conversational style, this book reaches out to fellow sufferers and instils hope. - Punya Srivastava A return to peace Anxiety Rebalance by Carl Vernon Hachette India, ` 399, 213 pages

Š80Š LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 Œ Truth is the same always. Whoever ponders it will get the same answer. Buddha got it. Patanjali got it. Jesus got it. Mohammed got it. The answer is the same, but the method of working it out may vary this way or that. Œ At various points in our lives, or on a quest, and for reasons that often remain obscure, we are driven to make decisions which prove with hindsight to be loaded with meaning. Œ We are not going to change the whole world, but we can change ourselves and feel free as birds. Œ Mere philosophy will not satisfy us. We cannot reach the goal by mere words alone. Without practice, nothing can be achieved. Œ When even one virtue becomes our nature, the mind becomes clean and tranquil. Then there is no need to practice meditation; we will automatically be meditating. Œ If we think we are bound, we are bound. If we think we are liberated, we are liberated... It is only when we transcend the mind that we are free from all these troubles. Œ If we only look within, we will see the Light as if we were seeing our own image in a mirror. Œ In not only the physical science, but in the real mental silence, the wisdom dawns. This, I know Swami Satchidananda teaching story founder, Integral Yoga Institute Hold their hand A little girl and her father were crossing a bridge. The father was a bit scared of the gushing river below, and in apprehension he asked his little daughter, “Sweetheart, please hold my hand so that you don't fall into the river.” The little girl said, “No, Dad. You hold my hand.” “What is the difference?,” asked the puzzled father. “There is a big difference,” replied the little girl. “If I hold your hand and something happens to me, chances are that I may let go of your hand. But if you hold my hand, I know for sure that no matter what happens, you will never let my hand go.” In any relationship, the essence of trust is not in its bind, but in its bond. So hold the hand of the person who loves you rather than expecting them to hold yours. Banyan Tree

LIFE POSITIVE ŠFEBRUARY 2017 Š81Š I am no longer waiting for a special occasion; I burn the best candles on ordinary days. I am no longer waiting for the house to be clean; I fill it with people who understand that even dust is Sacred. I am no longer waiting for everyone to understand me; It’s just not their task I am no longer waiting for the perfect children; my children have their own names that burn as brightly as any star. I am no longer waiting for the other shoe to drop; It already did, and I survived. I am no longer waiting for the time to be right; the time is always now. I am no longer waiting for the mate who will complete me; I am grateful to be so warmly, tenderly held. I am no longer waiting for a quiet moment; my heart can be stilled whenever it is called. I am no longer waiting for the world to be at peace; I unclench my grasp and breathe peace in and out. I am no longer waiting to do something great; being awake to carry my grain of sand is enough. I am no longer waiting to be recognised; I know that I dance in a holy circle. I am no longer waiting for Forgiveness. I believe, I believe. - Mary Anne Perrone The young disciple was such a prodigy that scholars from everywhere sought his advice and marvelled at his learning. When the Governor was looking for an advisor, he came to the Master and said, “Tell me, is it true that the young man knows as much as they say he does?” “Truth be told,” said the Master wryly, “the fellow reads so much I don‘t see how he could ever find the time to know anything.” inspiration one-minute wisdom Christmas at midlife Ignorance quote “Accept that you are not fi nished, and a new and better life is just beginning.” - Bryant McGill
