MADE IN INDIA | June 2024 | Discover Chennai 15 Swamimalai literally translates as the mount of God. It is an unassuming village that lies 30 Km away from Tanjore. One can hear the din of metals ringing in the background as 30-odd families pursue the craft of bronze casting icons here. Historical evidence showcases that the craft has been practised here since the Chola period (850 AD - 1250 AD). For generations, the sculptors have followed the ancient scripture called ‘Sirpa Sastra’ which has naturebased specifications for various parts of the icons. For example: The eyes are supposed to be modelled after fish, the hands after an elephant trunk etc. The exquisite craft involves making a detailed wax model figurine and creating a clay mould over it. Upon heating, the clay mould ‘loses’ the wax through an opening and the molten bronze metal is then poured into the mold. After cooling down, the mold is then broken to reveal the bronze icon within. Pichwai translates to “behind the idol” or “hang from back” and refers to the exquisite paintings that adorn the walls of temples dedicated to Lord Krishna and Gopinathji, particularly in the Shrinathji temple of Nathdwara. These artworks are vibrant backdrops for the deity’s idol form and are an integral part of the temple’s rituals and festivities. The sibling duo’s brand is dedicated to preserving India’s heritage, is partnering with women artisans in Manipur to create sustainable kauna reed bags and baskets. Kauna, also known as bulrush, is a versatile plant that thrives in shallow water and marshy lands. This naturally pest-resistant grass not only purifies water by absorbing pollutants but also provides habitat for birds and fish. Harvested sustainably three times a year, kauna’s strong stems form the foundation of this traditional craft. “The artisans cut the kauna reeds when they reach 3-4 feet and dry them in the sun. Before weaving, the reeds are moistened for flexibility. The tools are refreshingly simple: needles for stitching and scissors or pliers for cutting. Mats are woven on jute frames, while three-dimensional objects like bowls and bottles serve as molds for more intricate shapes. This practice has been passed down for generations, with Ziveli using bamboo and wood molds to create unique designs,” shares Tanvi. The development of Ziveli’s partnership with the local co-operative society has been transformative. By providing skills training and fair wages to the local artisans, the women’s incomes have tripled, giving them a reliable source of income for most of the year. This financial security has had a positive impact on their families, allowing for increased spending on education and healthcare. Ziveli’s vision is to create a self-sustaining kauna craft ecosystem. They are investing in design, marketing, branding, and quality control to help the artisans reach a wider market. Their products are already be18

They were capable of highly skilled and original hand embroidery work that has won praises from several quarters. The women of Irula tribe specialize in producing original, unique hand embroidered textiles for use in wall art, curtains, and other products used in the home décor industry. Inspired by South Indian sacred patterns like sikku kolams, mandalas, and rangolis, these artisans meticulously embroider their designs onto fabrics like silk, cotton, khadi, and linen. The crispy taco chips is put together with grated cheese, fiery jalapenos, Mexican beans, sour cream, salsa, sweet corn, lettuce and a dollop of gooey cheese for good measure.
