Ravindra Boratkar Letter from Publisher
Publisher &
Dear Readers,
Managing Editor, I wish A Very Happy and Prosperous New Year to all our readers and advertisers.
MD, MM Activ Sci-Tech The new year also rings in the UN-declared InternationalYear of Millets, understandably
Communications Pvt. Ltd. crucial for the food sector. A lot is being done globally to increase awareness about millets
in enhancing food security and nutrition, to promote millets, and also to encourage
investments in its R&D.
It is a proud moment for India since it was our proposal to celebrate 2023 as the
International Year of Millets. India celebrated 2018 as the National Year of Millets. India’s
affinity with millets is quite natural, as the largest producer of millets, accounting for 20
per cent global and 80 per cent of Asia’s production. India has also drawn plans for the
millet celebration in various ways. You will be able to read about it in this New Year issue.
I am sure, while welcoming the new year, you might have savoured new and different
types of delectable foods. The Indian food industry, particularly the processed and ready-
to-eat sector, is growing fast. The growth is not limited to the volume of consumption or
financials of food producing companies. Foodies, especially, are in for a treat with the
range of various types and flavours of foods racking up in food stores.
For the food industry to keep growing, two ‘I’s are the most essential. They are
investments and innovations. To highlight their importance, we have focused on the two
‘I’s in this issue. One news report of 2021 said that the investments in agri food tech
startups had shot up 97 per cent to $21 billion in 2020-21. However, 67 per cent of that
reflects the restaurant marketplace alone.
While channels to connect with consumers, like restaurants, stores, e-stores and
delivery agencies are important in the food sector, food producing companies that roll out
novel foods on a regular basis are also equally important, if not more.
Hence, we’ve covered the status of investments in new-age food tech startups. As
mentioned above, investment needs to be accompanied by the introduction of new food
items, which requires innovation and R&D. Hence, part of the investment must be
diverted for R&D. Important question is ‘how much’? The price-to-research ratio (PRR)
is a measure of comparing companies’ R&D expenditures. The globally accepted norm is
the PRR ratio of 5x to 10x.
It is also important that the investment in R&D must effectively be translated into
new and viable products. Only then the investment will guarantee good returns. Food
companies need to ensure this, something we've covered in this edition as well.
I am confident that you will enjoy reading this and upcoming mags and crave for more
such content.
Bon appetit and Happy Reading,
Thanks & Regards,

Shouldn't the Food
Industry Focus on R&D?

The food industry is considered to be an industry with medium- to low-intensity research and development
(R&D). The share of total output attributable to R&D is significantly lower than in other industries such as
the automobile, software, or pharmaceutical industries. This is understood to be related to the fact that
research activities in many food companies play a minor role or are simply not carried out at all. Many
innovations are derived from other input sectors and incorporated in machinery, packaging, and other
manufacturing supplies. The lack of interest towards R&D stems from these factors and a lack of support
from the government, claim some industry insiders. Let's understand the current R&D situation and how it

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at its 75th session on March 5, 2021 declared the year 2023
