nutrition in recent years have been one of the primary
factors for impeding the infant nutrition market.
Breast milk products are not sterile and are at risk of

In several global studies, it has been observed that
infant formula is not regulated in some countries. By
2015, the government of China released stricter food
safety standards. Further, in 2018, the Chinese Food
and Drug Administration (CFDA) reduced the number
of permitted milk powder products by 1,400 to boost
the bigger domestic brands in the country. Therefore,
the food security and regulation in each country
needs better speculation, which at present impedes
the growth of this market. Other factors are the risk
of allergies or autoimmune diseases associated with
infant nutrition products.

Further, there is a growing recognition of the

“CREATE AWARENESS ON
IMPORTANCE OF ORGANIC
FOOD FOR CHILDREN”

How can the penetration of organic food be increased in the child nutrition

Dr Jasmin James market?
Nutritionist, Though the child nutrition market in India is growing gradually, the organic food

Motherhood Hospital segment is nascent. According to the“Indian Baby Food Market Overview”report
by Research & Markets, the segment, mostly comprising of non-organic foods, is

expected to grow at a 15 per cent CAGR. This provides immense scope for organic

food in the child nutrition market. Organic food has been popular in India, but there has not been a systematic

approach to it. A national level campaign by the stakeholders, is required to create awareness, including the

government agencies, on the importance of organic food for children. There is enough scope for the private players

to participate in such campaigns. Joint programmes with the progressive state governments could be launched

through initial pilot schemes to establish the importance of organic foods. In parallel, organic food producers could

partner with NGOs working in the child welfare space to create awareness. Unless there is a systematic approach

from a comprehensive perspective, penetration of organic foods in the child nutrition market will not be easy.

Do you think the child nutrition market is organized in our country? If not, how can things be improved?
Statistics forecasts the Indian child nutrition market to reach $240.3 million in 2018. The market is still

growing, with their presence largely in the urban areas, specifically metros. There are international as well as
domestic brands, which are well established in India. But they target only a specific set of customers, while the
larger segment of the market is still being denied nutrition owing to various reasons. The need is to reach out
to every child in need of nutrition in this country. The government agencies are contributing in several ways
through their welfare programmes involving the healthcare fraternity. However, we need a public-private
partnership to get this going from a long-term perspective. We could look at various successful models to
strengthen the child nutrition market.

Is there a need to increase the number of supplement products for growing children in order to ensure
sufficient nutrition?

The government and the medical sectors have already identified the nutritional deficiency among children
and programmes are already being implemented at the national and state levels. Be it anaemia (iron deficiency)
or Vitamin A or B deficiency, there are several programmes running in different states under the aegis of
agencies, which specialise in these topics. Sometimes, the nutrients in their regular food supply might fall short.
In that case, introducing supplements is necessary to aid the all-round development and growth of a child.

“NUTRITION SUPPLEMENT

Shruti Kumbla
Senior Nutritionist, How can the penetration of organic food be increased in the child nutrition
Pristine Organics market?

Baby food market is forecasted to reach $69.8 billion in 2022. The market is

dominated by the non-organic baby food with 63 per cent market share of Nestle.

With less number of companies in the organic baby food sector, the penetration of the market is less. Although,

awareness among mothers about organic foods and their benefits will help this segment. But, with Food Safety

and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)’s intervention in the organic sector, awareness of the certified organic

baby foods will increase which will build up more confidence among consumers to trust the brand.

Do you think the child nutrition market is organized in our country? If not, how can things be improved?
With more online stores like firstcry, Healthkart, to name the few have come in place, the market is heading

to be more organized especially in the major cities. Although awareness and market size are yet to be tapped in
the rural sector of the country.

How is the safety of the food ingredients ensured for the child nutrition products?
Nutrition supplement available in the market for children do not adhere to the WHO guidelines of sugar
intake. Most of the products are loaded with added sugar. Careful selection of the right ingredients is very
important for formulation of child nutrition products. Special measures are taken during packaging and transit
to make it safe for consumption.

Is there a need to increase the number of supplement products for growing children to ensure sufficient
nutrition?

The nutrition needs of growing children is quite demanding. Due to the deficient food intake the
dependence of nutrition supplements among children is high. As mentioned, most of the products are loaded
with added sugar which are harmful for the developing children, as sugar has an addictive ability. Refined sugar
devoid of any nutrition makes it harmful for health. There is a need for supplements that tackle the need of the
child with protein, essential vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acid.

in 2017. Conflict and insecurity continued to be the primary
drivers of food insecurity in 18 countries, where almost 74

assistance. This is according to the Global Report on Food
Crises 2018 released on March 22. Now in its third edition,
the Global Report on Food Crises, which is accepted as the
reference document on latest estimates of severe hunger
in the world is a public good prepared collectively by 12
leading global and regional institutions under the umbrella
of the Food Security Information Network (FSIN). The
report draws attention to rising levels of food insecurity
and malnutrition, particularly associated with conflict and
the impact of extreme climate events.

Last year’s report identified 108 million people in crisis
food security or worse across 48 countries. A comparison
of the 45 countries included in both editions of the report
reveals an increase of 11 million people – an 11 per cent
rise – in the number of food-insecure people across the
world who require urgent humanitarian action.
