Message from the Head of Schools Important Dates / Days

Dear parents/guardians, September 18 - National Cheeseburger
Day
As we launch our first parent workshop this week on the theme of
Supporting Your Child with Distance Learning: Well being, led by Simon September 20 - Wife Appreciation Day
Mann, I wanted to share some thoughts on wellbeing with you. At a time September 21 - International Peace Day
when parents are spinning a myriad of plates ,from work to running a September 24 - 1st Online Assembly
household to supporting education at home to finding quality time with
loved ones , ever conscious of the additional pressure due to the for MS/HS
pandemic, it has never been more important to practice self care. September 28 - Confucius Day
Ironically, when we need it the most, finding the time to look after October 5-8 - Spirit Week
ourselves has never been more pressured. I think, though, of the October 9 - Parent Workshop 2
phrase used for air travel , " put your own mask on first before helping October 5-28
others" . To help our children, who are also spinning plates of their own,
we must look after ourselves so we are able to support our children. As
parents, we can do several things to support our own well being by:

 sharing any worries and seeking out support from our friends and family

Continued on next page...

Dragon Newsletter, Page 2 September 18, 2020

 living a healthy lifestyle by eating well, staying active, having fun
through shared family experiences and getting enough sleep

 staying well informed by finding out more about topics that concern us
 never stop talking and listening to our children through good times and

bad

Karen Jones Research tells us that keeping as many learning avenues open for our
children as possible, including outside the classroom, not only through after
Middle School and High School Director school activities but also by passing on the skills we may have or sharing our
Head of Schools interests connects us to our children through the shared learning process.
Children are natural learners and when we make their world as large as
possible by filling it with new ideas , experiences, and culture, they relish
the sense of achievement this gives them.

When we look after ourselves , when we put our own masks on first, we can
then encourage our children to pay attention to their feelings and show
them how to process their emotions in a positive way developing their
resilience. This is probably one of the most valuable life lessons we can pass
on to our children.

Middle School and High School

School is becoming more stimulating as we conclude our fourth week. The
class representatives of Middle and High School met with the Student
Council this week to plan their upcoming assembly on September 24.

Masks On Monday Spirit Week is coming this October. We will have dress up days according
to the theme! In the next week, homerooms will decide on their themes
Pajama Tuesday for Thursday (please watch this space for further updates). Let’s get fun
and creative with our costumes!
Wacky Wednesday
(something fun and light, Also, this week ,the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)
but still school appropriate) representative, Dino Calderon, met with the juniors and
seniors to discuss CAS projects in collaboration with WWF,
which include the development and production of video
materials for public school online learning, and designing
online workshops and webinars for WWF. We recommend
that parents encourage their children who are enrolled in
the CAS program to sign up for one of these online CAS pro-
jects offered.

We are also looking forward to more CAS project proposals
from other non-profit organizations, such as from Interna-
tional Justice Mission (IJM) in the upcoming weeks. We
hope our IB students become more engaged in experiences
which will help to develop their social awareness.

As always, stay safe and have a restful weekend!

among the staff to always be vigilant and
protect oneself and others.

challenge ourselves to improve and adapt due to our current situation.
