THIS WEEK AT CISM
Happy Mid-Autumn Festival 中秋节
Mid-Autumn Festival, 中秋节 Zhōngqiū jié, is a joyous occasion that families
celebrate together by gazing at the moon while eating mooncakes, guessing
lantern riddles, playing dice games and lighting paper lanterns.
It is also known as Mooncake Festival. The mooncake, which symbolizes the full
moon, are presented as gifts to relatives and friends. Mooncakes are small
baked cakes with a variety of fillings like lotus seeds paste, salted duck eggs
and melon seeds. In Chinese culture, roundness symbolizes completeness and
togetherness. A full moon symbolizes prosperity and reunion for the whole
family.
In addition to this, it is also a celebration of the rice harvest and the abundance
of fruits. This year, it falls on the 10th of September (Saturday).
In CISM, the festival has been marked by having the traditional dice game, also
known as 博饼 Bó bǐng. It involves six dice and a China bowl with 63 different
prizes for the players. We commemorated this tradition during the Chinese
classes today as we brought everyone together in gratitude.
