The venue
The University of Worcester Arena
provided a “green” location for the
event, with its active promotion of
sustainability. Just a few of its
initiatives include sourcing food
as locally as possible and making
as much as possible in house to
minimise food miles, encouraging
sustainable transport, enhancing
biodiversity on campus, and
ensuring sustainable approaches
in construction and
refurbishment.
The set-up Starting from

OPENING ADDRESS
Marian’s opening address
officially began the event.
Marian discussed celebrating
our history and thinking
about our future. She
inspired NE staff to think
about our shared values and
purpose and about what we
want the NE organisation to
be. She also reminded us to
make connections, have fun
and enjoy!
Presentation: mark
cocker
Mark reminded us that “all
human creativity is enriched
by our links with nature. He
praised the breadth of Natural
England’s work and noted its
sheer scale. He also emphasised
the importance of recognising
the interconnectedness and
dependence of all organisms
and the role that we all have
to play in wider society of
improving the quality of the
conversation around nature
and conservation issues.
Presentation: tony juniper
Tony dove straight into
bringing together the
challenges faced by the
natural world and the
circumstances in which
Natural England finds
itself and has to work. He
explored the way in
which conservation
efforts have changed
since they officially
began in 1949, the
profound impact of
climate change, and the
things that we can start
to do differently, such as
re-wilding.
Presentation: marian spain –
our mission and vision
Marian’s focus on Natural England’s mission and
vision was a key part of setting our direction for
the future and providing the backdrop to ongoing
conversations over the coming months.
Our mission is about having thriving nature for
people and planet. In terms of looking towards an
end state – we are looking to see the entire natural
world thriving and flourishing. Our vision is
about building partnerships for nature’s recovery
in four key areas: sustainable development,
resilient landscapes and seas, greener farming and
fisheries, and connecting people with nature.

In conversation
A lively conversation examined
challenges such as the reinvention
of conservation and joining up
different elements to help the
nature recovery network (e.g., the
disparate activities of Natural
England, the Forestry Commission,
the Environment Agency). Mark,
Marian and Tony each gave an
insight into what nature means to
them.
Q&A session
An engaging Q&A
session brought
forward
interesting
questions, e.g.,
around the
protection of
habitats post-
Brexit and
Natural England’s
role within the
wider political
framework.
