PERSONAL ECONOMY SUMMIT 2016

Foreword

Everyone is passionate about something within their Personal Economy.

For some, spending time with family is most revitalising; for others, their career is what
makes their adrenalin flow; there are some who are stimulated by sports and outdoor
adventures; others are completely fulfilled while immersed in art, literature or music…

Passion is the secret ingredient that makes life worth living. Yet many do not give the
activities that they feel passionate about a special place on their list of priorities;
especially if it is not their career.

The Personal Economy Summit aimed to unlock the passion in an individual's economy.
People who live inspiring lives and are driven by their passion were invited to share their
experiences and insights. The Summit went one step further and offered perspectives
on how to plan for one's passion, while pursuing a career that may be executed
passionately.

This souvenir captures the essence of the two-part event. We trust that you will find it
both engaging and enlightening. More importantly, we hope it inspires you to find your
passion and pursue it.

PERSONAL ECONOMY SUMMIT 2016

What is Personal Economy?

Your Personal Economy is made up of everything that matters to you - your family,
your home, your passions and your career. It differs from person to person and is as
dynamic and unique as your fingerprints. Understanding your Personal Economy
helps you prioritise your goals. That's why, we, at HSBC Premier, focus on growing
your Personal Economy.

PERSONAL ECONOMY SUMMIT 2016

About the Summit

Your passion is the most exciting and inspirational aspect of your Personal
Economy. It could be your work, a hobby or an experience that allows you to unwind
and escape from your daily routine.
The HSBC Premier Personal Economy Summit: Your Wealth & Beyond - Season 2,
in partnership with ET NOW, focused on the importance of pursuing your passions.
It explored the intangible value of one's passion and the vital role that it plays in their
emotional and financial well-being.

PERSONAL ECONOMY SUMMIT 2016

Many Faces of Passion

A little inspiration keeps everyone motivated. And when one's inspiration is
reflected in their work, then nothing can come between them and success.
The Personal Economy Summit at Mumbai evaluated how passion drives a sense
of belonging, purpose, accomplishment and fulfilment, all of which are central to a
flourishing Personal Economy.

Driven by Passion
and Cold Hard Data

N R Narayana Murthy

FOUNDER, INFOSYS

In 1981, Narayana Murthy founded Infosys, a global
software consulting company headquartered in Bangalore.
He served as the CEO of Infosys during 1981 – 2002, as the
Chairman and Chief Mentor during 1981 – 2011, and as the
Chairman Emeritus during August 2011 – May 2013. He has
led key corporate governance initiatives in India and is an IT
advisor to several Asian countries.

To Mr. Murthy, passion is the fuel that enables you to achieve your ambitions and
aspirations. It gives you the energy, enthusiasm, confidence and courage to move to a
higher level. It stems from a bond you have with some idea.

In his experience, leaders must align individual passions to collective passions, define
collective passions and raise the level of passion in teams they lead.

If one's passion is goal-oriented, one must constantly measure its progress using
benchmarks and data. Constantly assessing weaknesses enables one to gauge if passion is
leading one towards a desired goal. And, setting intermittent milestones and achieving
them, keeps energy levels elevated. Effectively, smaller steps towards one's goal pre-
empts burnouts along the way and ensures that passion drives one to one's goals.

Follow your Heart
Wealth will Follow

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

NATIONAL AWARD WINNING FILMMAKER

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is a Director, Writer and
Producer who established ROMP Pictures in India. This
production house has won awards for making movies which
tell Indian stories to the world. He has also made numerous
television advertisements for renowned brands both national
and international ones like BPL, American Express, Pepsi,
Coke and Toyota.

Mr. Mehra has made eclectic career choices in his life so far, yet always with passion and
enthusiasm. That, according to him, is what determines his personal satisfaction and
success. He clarifies that the 'success' he speaks of should never be measured in monetary
terms; by following one's heart, wealth follows.

Throughout his journey – be it his tryst with selling vacuum cleaners as a young lad, his
entrepreneurial adventure as a partner in an export firm, the establishment of his ad film
company Flicks Motion Pictures and finally, his award winning films through his signature
ROMP Pictures – he was always driven by his passion to connect with people.

Still open to the idea of finding new passions, he concludes that passions stem from past
experiences. This makes them very unique and individualistic. Consequently, measuring
one's passions and success against those of anyone else is a futile exercise.

11

Hard Work and Passion
go Hand in Hand

Mahesh Bhupathi

12 TIME GRAND SLAM CHAMPION

Mahesh Bhupathi is best known as one of the top doubles
players in the 1990s and early 2000s. In 2001, he was
awarded the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian
awards. More recently, he has been involved in developing
tennis facilities in India. Through his company Globosport, he
has played a key role in developing and managing the careers
of many Indian athletes.

Very early in life, Mahesh Bhupati learnt the true meaning of passion from his father, who
was his first coach and mentor. His single-minded focus on improving his game led him to
join the University of Mississippi in in the United States. Even then, he had no illusions of
attaining a degree there; his only interest was the excellent sports facilities it offered. These
were early signs of his passion for the sport.

Tennis has taught him the value of dedication and hard work. It has also taught him that
following one's passion for sports and making it a career needs more than dedication and
hard work – it requires a strong financial backing too. This led him to his next passion –
promotion of young sporting talent.

Post retirement from tennis, he is pursuing his aspiration of taking sports to the masses. He
also zealously promotes, develops and manages the careers of Indian athletes through his
company, Globosport.

Balancing Passion
with Reality

Many are lucky to find passion in what they do for a living, while some discover it
though their hobbies, dreams and experiences. Either way, it is an intrinsic yarn that
weaves enthusiasm in our lives that drives us to achieve our goals.
The team from HSBC offered simple suggestions on how one can plan financially so
that one can pursue one's passions, especially if they are hobbies and quests
beyond one's career.

15

Confront your Fears
to Find your Passion

Stuart P Milney

GGM, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, HSBC INDIA

Stuart Milne joined HSBC Holdings Plc in 1981, after
graduating with Honours in Modern Arabic Studies from the
University of Durham, England. In his 34 years with HSBC, Mr.
Milne has worked in a number of businesses and in a variety of
geographic locations, including the Arabian Gulf, Hong Kong,
Philippines, New York, Paris and Tokyo.

Mr. Milne believes that there's more to life than making it through the day. Passion gives a
meaning to life. For many, their career is not their passion and never will be; at best, it is a
livelihood, a means to an end. The reality with most people is that they do have a passion,
even if it is not their job or their career.

He described the summit is an effort to encourage clients to consider their Personal
Economy. At HSBC, clients are always asked to consider their priorities and helped to match
their personal objectives to financial products. As bankers, they understand that to follow
one's passion, one has to plan for one's finances.

Children, he agreed, may not know what their passion is. They may need some time to
figure it out. As a parent, one must be financially prepared to accommodate their lead time
until they eventually find and follow their passion.

He concluded with the wisdom that your passion finds you…sometimes you come by it
almost by mistake; sometimes it comes from confronting your fears.

Love What you Do,
Do What you Love

S Ramakrishnan

HEAD, RETAIL BANKING & WEALTH MANAGEMENT, HSBC INDIA

S. Ramakrishnan heads the Retail Banking and Wealth
Management business for HSBC in India. A graduate in
Economics from St. Stephen's College, Delhi,
Ramakrishnan completed his post-graduation in
business management from the Indian Institute of
Management, Calcutta. He is a part of the Executive
Committee of HSBC India which steers the bank's
business in the country.

Mr. Ramakrishna quoted: “It’s never too late to pursue your passion; it’s never too early to
plan for it”. Living one’s passion does not mean leaving one’s current career pursuits. On the
contrary, it requires robust financial support.

Lack of planning, funds or guidance and/or insecurity about failure are some factors that
keep most people from following their passion. More than half the battle is won with a
financial plan. To this he appended a very important addendum: Make sure that you plan for
your passions as well.

He stressed the need for an expert or guide, once a plan has been crafted. A trainer does not
undermine one’s ability to create an ideal financial plan; it gives one invaluable external
views and unbiased feedback. Lastly, he advises, “Review your goals regularly if you want
to regularly achieve your goals.”

Mr. Ramakrishnan’s parting counsel was, “Ensure that your financial plan is dynamic. While
some things in your plan cannot be moved along the timeline, others should be left flexible,
to accommodate your passion.”

17

Passion Never Retires

Tushar Pradhan

CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER, HSBC AMC

Tushar Pradhan is the CIO of HSBC Asset Management
(India) Private Limited. He is responsible for all investment
activities and strategies across asset classes – Equity, Fixed
Income and Multi-Asset. With an MBA in Investment
Finance, having graduated from the University of Hartford,
Connecticut, US, in 1992, he has over 19 years of experience
in various roles during his career.

The irony of retirement, according to Mr. Pradhan, is that we direct all our passion to an
activity during our entire life and then eventually, we have to give it all up. One should be able
to retire from a job but never have to retire from one's passion. Admittedly, investing and
meditation are his passions; and while they may seem poles apart, they have a lot in
common.

Like investing, perfecting any passion including meditation involves time and hard work. Yet
along the way, as while investing, one gains compound interest. He explained saying, “Any
passion we follow in life generates benefits along the way, inevitably. These benefits
compound and give us even greater satisfaction than our initial pursuit.”

Time in the market beats timing the market. Similarly, the more time one spends with one's
passion, the more it grows, in Pradhan's experience. Eventually, passion takes over and
drives one's life. “Give your passion time and it will carry you forward. If you embrace your
passion, you will never have to retire.”

Students Café

Student's Café was a special session within the HSBC Premier Personal Economy
Summit - Season 2. It aimed to inspire the young leaders of tomorrow; to bring out
the power and importance of a healthy Personal Economy and the role it plays in
preparing them to achieve their passions. Rehan Yar Khan recounted how passion
makes one ambitious and determined, and gives one the strength and optimism to
succeed.

Rehan Yar Khan

MANAGING PARTNER AND
FOUNDER OF ORIOS VENTURE PARTNERS

Rehan Yar Khan is the Managing Partner and Founder of
Orios Venture Partners. He has overall responsibility for all
aspects of the funds activities. Rehan has consistently
been recognized as amongst India's leading early stage
technology investor, leading investments into OlaCabs,
Druva, Jigsee (acquired by VuClip), Ziffi, Zapstitch and
other stellar companies.
Very early in life he realised that he would not find his passion while working in the
corporate world. In an era when every bright-eyed youth dreamed of climbing the
corporate ladder, he had the drive to create something of his own – the passion to
be an entrepreneur.

His advice to potential young entrepreneurs was 'follow your passion'. If it excites
you to be in the corporate world, go for it; if building a business is what gives you
satisfaction then that's what you must explore; if the social sector is your calling,
you will excel at it. Money must never be your motivation; let your sense of
fulfilment guide you.

The Many Faces of Passion

Passion knows no bounds. It is infinite; it is limitless. However, this fast paced
world poses as a considerable hurdle when it comes to pursuing your desires.
The Personal Economy Summit at Delhi decrypted the importance of passion
and the vital role that it plays in one's overall health and well-being.

Passion - a Prerequisite
for Success

CEO, NITI AAYOG, GOVERNMENT OF INDIA

Amitabh Kant is a member of the Indian Administrative
Service, IAS (Kerala Cadre: 1980 Batch). Prior to being posted
as CEO, NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming
India), he was Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and

as "Make in India", "Startup India", "Incredible India" and "God's
Own Country".

Amitabh Kant was inspired to work with the government because of the sheer size and
scale of the initiatives that could be undertaken. To him, it was an unmatched opportunity.
He attributed his successes, in campaigns he has led, to choosing and working with only the
very best quality people.

He views every crisis is an opportunity. He believes that passion, commitment and success
come from conviction.

Vision, in his view, must have detailing to support it. A vision becomes a reality when there is
attention paid to details and it is implemented as envisaged. He is convinced that India is
bound to succeed if we approach a mission with clarity, conviction, passion and the
assistance of men of merit, through public-private partnerships.

A Passion for Many Hats

Prahlad Kakkar

LEADING AD FILM MAKER, RESTAURATEUR,
MAN OF MANY PASSIONS

Prahlad Kakkar established Genesis Film Productions, a
leading Indian production house in 1977. He is best known for
his direction of the famous Pepsi TV commercial with Amitabh
Bachchan and Sachin Tendulkar. He set up 'Lacadives', a

coffee shop, a restaurant, Papa Pancho Da Dhaba and Casa
Amore, a wine bar. Most recently, he has started The Prahlad
Kakar School of Branding and Entrepreneurship, in association with Whistling Woods
International.

Prahlad Kakkar personified the word 'Passion' with his enthusiasm and eternally youthful
spirit. He declared that he has never had to plan his career; he merely followed his heart.
Money has never mattered to him; he insisted it never stayed with him either. Yet, he has
the good fortune of having extremely talented people happily slaving for his causes, for little
or no remuneration.

He advised that in order to learn and grow, one has to let go of one's ego, take risks and
overcome fears, or perhaps come to terms with them. While he recommended, “Be
respectful of fear because it is your safety net”, he cautioned, “but don't be paralysed by it.”

He concluded with the wisdom that any job can be done with passion and conviction, if you
truly take responsibility for it – that's what makes you an entrepreneur. You must own your
job.
