‘’A good half of the art of living is Resilience’’Alain de Botton
‘Resilience’ will perhaps be the lesson of the by- gone year put in a single word. Whilst the storm of the pandemic is thankfully settling, each of us have become more rooted, compassionate and resilient.
AKMG Emirates have had its share of setbacks too, owing to the pandemic, but was creative in finding new ways to function effectively and has successfully completed a tenure, which would
otherwise have been dark and depressing, thanks to the resilience of the leaders at the helm...
A promising new tenure has started with an interesting assortment of activities. We are gradually moving to real from virtual, which is reassuring and refreshing as well.
Happiness is the key word for the next 2 years; please flip through the pages of ‘Synapse’ to feel happy and proud of our dear organization.
Dr Nita Salam
Editor
It demands an ironclad commitment to our- selves and to each other to ensure that as an organization, AKMG Emirates could reflect the humanitarian approach, the spirit of toler- ance and solidarity, which are the core values embedded in all the initiatives of this nation, UAE. The leaders and the members of AKMG Emirates took the responsibility of extending various humanitarian services, which heaved a huge sigh of relief for the needy during the pandemic. The efficiency, in which these mea- sures have been rolled out, reflects the orga- nization’s readiness and preparedness to rise above exceptional circumstances, such as those facing the world today.
I hold the position of Joint-editor of this prestigious organization with im- mense pride.
This edition of SYNAPSE, our quarterly newsletter, will give an insight into all the activities of AKMG Emirates for the last four months.

Dear AKMG members
Greetings from your President!!
I am extremely happy to be a part of the first edition of the newsletter of the new term,2021-23. I sincere- ly appreciate the efforts taken by the Editorial team to present this latest edition of the news letter to the AKMG members.
Established in 2003, in line with the AKMG USA, by our visionary lead- ers, AKMG Emirates has grown by leaps and bounds into one of the biggest and most active profes- sional organizations in UAE, with a membership of 1500. We have exe- cuted various activities for the hap- piness and welfare of our mem- bers. Though Covid 19 has dented some of our activities, we got max- imum media attention during this pandemic time, because of various welfare activities we did, for the
poor and needy. I really appreciate the efforts of the outgoing team under the leadership of Dr. George Jacob, Dr. Sughu Koshy and Dr. Feroz Gaffoor. I also salute the visionary leaders of AKMG Emirates, starting with Padma Shri Dr. Azad Moopen our founder President, late Dr. M K Ibrahim, late Dr. V S Viswanathan, Dr. Radhakrishnan, Dr. Sirajudeen P M, Dr. Sunny Kurian Dr. Hanish Babu, Dr. George Jacob all other Central and Regional leaders, who have always stood with us, sup- ported and guided us.
I am very happy to be installed as the 9th President of AKMG Emirates and feel proud that we have been very active for the first 4 months. The President’s Theme “Happiness in To- getherness” was well taken up by all regions and the members! We could conduct physical President’s visit to majority of regions to spread the message of happiness. We conducted the 3rd edition of Derma Medecon, on hybrid platform, which was very
successful. The two unique activities, Short Film Festival and Menti quiz were big hits, among members. The sports committee organized various activities, like Volleyball Training camp, Tennis Pre- mier league, etc. which again made the members happy and engaged.

“Happiness in togetherness” is the Presidents theme for the tenure 2021-23.
It is a continuation of the previous two themes “Our Health Our Wealth” and “Strengthening the Bonds”.
Happiness grows with togetherness and our happiness is never com- plete unless all around us are happy as well. It is the acceptance of others, despite their differences in attitudes. We want all our members and their families to be happy, so that we can have seven happy regions and a ra- diant AKMG Emirates.
UAE has given us numerous oppor- tunities to be happy, and AKMG is indeed one among them...Let us utilize all these opportunities and stay happy together!
It has been envisaged that one day in every month be observed as Happi- ness Day wherein all members are en- couraged to attend and enliven the message of happiness.
Coming together is the beginning, Keeping together is progress but hap- py together is success!

I am Abhirami and this is not my story. It was March 2020, when quarantine and lockdown had not yet become common parlance. The medical col- lege where I was pursuing my third year of MBBS had temporarily closed as we had a few positive cases of Covid. Unaware of the bleak days ahead my friends and I were quite elated to get an unexpected break. Though the initial fantastic plans to visit my roommate’s place in Goa were unceremoniously rejected by parents (what was I even thinking!), I was allowed to visit my all-time ‘hap- py place’- my grandparent’s house in Kochi.
Though my grandfather dismissed the pandemic as a ‘political gimmick’, the Government seemed to believe otherwise, and I was mandated to have a period of fourteen days quar- antine before I visit them. This was arranged in an apartment we owned in the vicinity. My mother was highly skeptical of this arrangement as she was quite convinced that I was not capable of keeping myself alive (the withered plants in my room, mostly being the point of reference) without
help. I saw this as a golden opportuni- ty to prove my mother wrong for the first time in twenty years.
Thus, I embarked on my first solo ad- venture on a pleasant Friday morning, donned with double masks, gloves and face shield. I walked in to my cozy apartment, to a fully stocked pantry, all my favorite foods in mul- tiple sealed containers with tags and smiled as I saw my Grandmother’s loopy handwriting on one which said – ‘Don’t finish in one go’, needless to say the warning was not heeded and I proceeded to the swing chair in the balcony loaded with ‘unniappams’ (not even attempting to translate that because it’s one of those, you got to have it to know it kind of things), ready to embrace the solitude and discover my inner self .
Day 6 of quarantine – things were not going too well as my inner self seemed to show no interest in reveal- ing herself and I swore never to listen to Bon Jovi again. Even my mom’s Skype calls were beginning to hold some appeal. That was the night I first heard that tune. I am not exactly a connoisseur of music, but that mel- ody felt ethereal, austere, and vibrant at the same time. I stood still in the balcony listening intently, under the grey sky and felt overwhelmed and empowered.
I don’t remember when I drifted off
to sleep, but I woke up to hear some activity in the apartment above mine and rushed outside to the balcony. “Hey”, I shouted looking upwards and there was silence. “Are you the one who played the violin last night?” “Yes, and I am sorry if it disturbed you”, he said. “Are you serious? It was the most magical thing I ever heard! Are you some hotshot musician or something?” I asked, all social propri- ety deserting me after 6 days of being cooped up. He laughed and said, “Not hotshot exactly but definitely wan- nabe.” He proceeded to tell me that he is an aspiring musician and had composed few jingles for ads, two of which I was familiar with. “I am Abhi- rami, by the way a wannabe doctor. What is your name?”“Do you want to know the name my parents gave me, or the name society calls me or the name I identify myself with?” came the cryptic reply. “That is the most complicated answer to one of the simplest questions! What about I call you by the name I relate to you? Mr. Violinist.”“Hmm... just Violinist would be perfect” “Okay then Violinist it is.” I said brightly.
I was sitting on my swing chair, trying to complete an assignment as well as hoping to have a glimpse of my new friend when I heard the melody again. It was just as spellbinding as I remembered. I soaked in the music; my assignment totally forgotten. I got up as he stopped, and he called out
VIOLINIST

Issue 1, 2021
“Did you like the additions?” “I hav- en’t learned music so I really cannot comment on the technicality. All I can say is that it will stay with me for a very long time”. “You don’t have to be trained to appreciate music; in fact, I make my music for the public who would hum my tune during their dai- ly chores. What do you perceive in this melody?”“My first feeling was pathos, confusion but entwined and final- ly winning over is hope”. He started playing again and I listened.
It was another pleasant evening and the fragrance of Jasmine flowers wafted into my bedroom. I went to the balcony to see my friend’s gar- den in full bloom. It was a cacopho- ny of bright colors, but the Jasmine flowers were the most beautiful and aromatic. It was almost as if his mu- sic breathed life into them. To be honest, I was a bit miffed with him for not even attempting once to walk out to the balcony and show his face! Maybe it is true what they say about musicians being antisocial, I thought glumly and started to walk back in. “Not chatting today, are we?” he called out. “I am busy with some college assignments.” I said, “Hmm... I almost thought it was because I did not walk out to the balcony to say hi in person.” “Maybe...” I said. “And you just assumed it was because I was a self-involved jerk. It is really sad that everyone is quick to believe the worst about a person and anything which is not within the dictated terms of nor- malcy is immediately an aberration”. I was quite taken aback by this sudden burst of emotion. “I am sorry. What happened?” I asked with concern. He then told me that he had recently undergone a major surgery and was still recuperating. His friend comes regularly to check on him and also takes him for his scheduled hospital appointments. I felt terrible for having judged him so wrongly. “I am terribly sorry again. What is your problem? I am half a doctor, and I am sure I can understand” I said. “I would rather not
talk about it and after all it is not just about who can talk but who gets to talk. I used to be naïve and believe that if you just found the right words and put them its appropriate order it would necessarily lead to under- standing. But now I know better.” He didn’t say anything after that, nor did he play his violin that night.
I did not hear from him for the next three days, and I was feeling quite anxious. I hoped desperately that his follow up had gone fine. That evening as I was trying to keep myself sane by binge watching some random show I heard the door open and shouted “Hey Violinist... how are you? Are you alright?” His friend came out to the balcony and said that he had been sick and had to be hospitalized but had recovered and was discharged with medication. I woke up next morning to the sound of violin and I rushed to the balcony. The sun was shining bright, a breeze carrying the aroma of Jasmine and that melody made the moment almost surreal. Without even hearing his voice I knew he felt bet- ter, and I laughed. The next three days passed by in a blur of music and con- versations, ranging from Beethoven and Bach to mysticism and fashion. I could sense that he was weak and needed to rest often but there was so much positivity and hope in his voice that it was contagious.
It was my last day of quarantine and I was so busy trying to fit all my things which somehow seemed to have multiplied into my suitcases. As I was waiting for my pickup I called out to him “Violonist, I know it is not your usual time but could you please play for me one last time?” And he played and as I drove away, I knew I would carry it with me for a long time like I first told him.
I had the most enjoyable time with my Grandparents and then proceed- ed to college where we were called onto battle the pandemic. Covid con-
Page 37 tinued to wreak its havoc and soon we
went from medical students to front- line warriors. Aprons were replaced by PPE suits, donning and doffing became routine and teatime conver- sations were centered around vaccine protocols and side effects.
I woke up last week with a start at the middle of the night hearing that melody again months later and felt my face wet with tears. I quickly searched for my phone and checked WhatsApp. The last message was three months ago sent by me asking about his health. In fact, I had received only a single message from him and that too a one liner saying he would come see me soon. I was shrouded by a sense of uneasiness for the entire day that I just couldn’t shake off. I couldn’t bring myself to get out of bed and decided to take the day off. As I sat scrolling through my laptop my eyes caught the headline of a leading newspaper “Controversy erupts over death of transwoman in Kochi. Ananya who was an aspiring music composer had undergone sex reassigning surgery following which she had apparently faced health ailments for a long time and was found hanging in an apart- ment the other day. ” My heart start- ed racing as I saw my friend’s face for the first time through bleary eyes. I felt like I couldn’t breathe as I clutched my pillow tight as sobs racked my body. I rushed to open my hostel window and breathed in the sweet aroma of jasmine flowers.

THE TIME CAPSULE
Hello strangers in 2021! This document has been sent to you as a part of an experiment testing my time machine. Now I know what you’re thinking. Time travel? Yeah right. But it’s very real in 2040. Anyway, I’m sending you this document with the story of a very im- pactful incident in my life, which hap- pened 10 years ago to see if you’ll know about it when I meet you in my time.
It was 5:00 a.m., May 8th, 2030. My alarm rang and I leaned to my bed- side table to turn it off, rolling off my bed and face-first into my bedroom’s shag carpet in the process. I helped myself up with about as much grace as a turtle on its back and turned on the lights. I then headed into the bathroom to freshen up. About 20 minutes later I came out and looked in the mirror. My choppy shoulder length brown hair was dripping wet and soaking the shoulders of my NASA sweatshirt while my bangs seemed determined to tinge my blue eyes with red. I dried my hair with the hairdryer but as I bent down to unplug the hairdryer, I knocked down the tall stack of novels on my bedside table and got smacked in the forehead with one book of Rick Riordan’s ‘Trials of Apollo’ series. I don’t know if you noticed, but I’m not exactly what you’d call a ‘morning person’.
Oh, and by the way, my name is Audrey Wright, and this is the story of how I overcame one of my biggest challeng- es that came with the second coronavi- rus pandemic. Yup, you heard me right. Lemme fill you in. After the coronavirus
vanished as a pandemic in 2023, peo- ple took a while to get used to their normal lives, and when they finally did, BOOM! In the blink of an eye, there came the second pandemic of the novel coronavirus. This was incredibly unexpected, because usually, it takes about a century for a pandemic to start again, but I guess the NCov is just not good with following the norm.
Anyway, back to my story, I’m an or- phan. After I turned 2, I was adopted by this incredibly kind and understanding woman, Emma Wright. She had raised me by herself in Washington square, Pasadena. I was what you could call a computer Wizkid and had managed to secure admission for the prestigious software engineering and nanotech- nology course in the Columbia Univer- sity here at the young age of fifteen. So, here I was in my third year (sixth semes- ter) of my course.
I opened the blinds and saw cars zip- ping through the roads of the city that never sleeps. I quickly ate my bowl of cereal, grabbed my face mask, and headed out to my Honda Accord and drove to college.
Today should have been as normal as any other day, but it just had to go so terribly wrong. Halfway through the day, I got pulled out of class by the Dean, Ms Gonzales. She took me to her office and sat down in her chair, look- ing worried. “Ms Gonzales, is there any problem?” I inquired. She let out a de- jected sigh and said, “Audrey I’m afraid
I’ve bad news. Your guardian Emma has been accused of a serious financial of- fence and she’s been arrested.”
I didn’t reply. I just couldn’t process the information that was just given to me in the past few minutes. The sincere hardworking woman who raised me is being accused of a serious financial of- fense? I was sensible enough to know that Mom had been framed. But by whom? And what kind of offense? I had a million questions to ask her, but I just couldn’t get myself to form the words. I took my leave and caught the first flight back home
I requested to meet my mom and was informed that she was undergoing eval- uation at a medical facility for cough. I rushed to meet the investigating officer seeking answers. He assured me her health condition was stable and that she was being evaluated further. Part- ly reassured, I demanded to know the details of the case “You see Audrey,” said officer Tanner, “we were investigating the theft of $50 million from the bank account of a high-profile client of the bank, Claudia Pfeiffer. We found that the transaction took place from your mother’s virtual laptop. To top it the CCTV monitors went blind from 30 min- utes before the transaction. “But just be- cause the transaction was from her lap- top doesn’t mean that she did it!” I cried. Then he reached into the topmost inner pocket of his navy-blue jacket and took out his phone and then proceeded to open a locked file. He pressed a button on the phone which projected a 3-D

holographic image of a computer chip.
Puzzled, I asked him, “What does this have to do with anything?” He sighed through his mask and replied, “It had Emma’s fingerprint on it. This was the chip used to sabotage the CCTV.”
I was in disbelief. The same Emma Wright that had helped put an end to a cyber fraud last year was now being accused of one? I was infuriated, but I put on my polite voice nonetheless and told him, “Officer, you must be mistaken. This woman has helped stop these kinds of plots, not start them. She is obviously being framed!” I saw worry etched in the lines of his middle-aged forehead, his dark brown eyes giving me the look that you would give a puppy trying to move a car. “Look, kid,” he said, “As much as you don’t want this to be true, all of the evidence is pointing to Emma right now, and the FBI have their hands full with a bunch of other problems that have come with the second coronavirus pandemic: a wave of cybercrimes, cases of extrem- ists and also conspirators popping up again saying that the virus is to cover up for aliens or zombies and what not. As far as this case goes, the evidence we have is incriminating. You’re just not old enough to face the facts.”
Ok, that was the last straw. I got off the couch and angrily marched towards the officer, (magically also managing to social distance). I shouted at him, my words a little muffled through my mask. “Look, mister, I think I know my mom much better than your dumb evidence, so you better go and find something that proves her innocent or else I will NOT leave you alone, OK?! And what’s with the whole, ‘not old enough to understand’ thing? Just be- cause you’re older than me does NOT mean that I’m a little kid! I am VERY, VERY mature all the time....” I faltered. “Uhhhh, except right now. Other than that, I’m very mature.” I said, embar- rassed.
“I’m sorry officer, I know that you’re just doing your job, I’m just on my wit’s end today.” I apologised. I saw the corners of his eyes wrinkle in amusement. “Eh, it’s fine.” he said. “I guess it’s just what
anyone would do in your place.” Then he got a call and 2 minutes later, he came and told me that Mom had test- ed positive for nCoV. I was worried be- cause Mom was asthmatic; this could be deadly to her. I promised myself that somehow, I would get us out of this mess.
I got up at 2:45 a.m. that night (morn- ing?) and put on an all-black outfit, sort of looking like a spy, which even though was completely unnecessary, helped console my anxiety anyway. I walked to Mom’s office building in Col- orado Boulevard and hacked my way into the building. I had tried to hack into their databases from home but turns out that they managed to protect their network in a way that made it im- possible to hack into the system from anywhere outside a 3m radius, so that when the hacker came to the building, they would be caught by the security system. Fortunately, I wasn’t caught by the security system as I managed to short-circuit it by messing with their solar energy reserves, entirely knock- ing out the electricity of the building. I now had about 3 minutes to get in be- fore the backup generator came back on to reactivate the security systems. I bolted through an unguarded service entrance and flew up the stairs up to the floor where Mom works which in- cidentally also housed the CCTV cam- era servers. I used the latest nano back up powered palmtop and hacked into their CCTV camera files. I scrutinized the information on the screen and then applied some of my techie magic. Soon enough, I had collected the recording of that night from a bunch of differ- ent cameras and could now see every square inch of the office. I rushed out before the back-up generators kicked in.
Wow, I hacked my way into a highly se- cured, software engineering building, and managed to bring their supposed- ly unfunctional cameras back to life! If this wasn’t kind of illegal, I might’ve put this on my résumé. I found the file with the footage of that night and opened it. I saw Mom sitting at her desk, massag- ing her head with her fingers. I worried- ly realized that she’d been symptomat-

ic since Thursday. She then headed to the espresso machine at the other end of the room. That’s when I saw it: a tall, lean man, completely dressed in black was making his way to mom’s desk. She was still standing by the espresso machine, looking a bit frustrated as it seemed to be jammed. She started looking through the instruction man- ual while the man quickly and quietly typed on the keyboard. I zoomed in on the monitor and saw that he was with- drawing money from Claudia Pfeiffer’s account! As he was leaving, he slightly turned his face to the camera. I paused and used my extension on the CCTV app to erase the mask off his face and then I realized with a shock who it was- my mom’s colleague, Alex Stan, who had helped Mom to stop the cyber- fraud last year, unless...... unless the group that had planned the scheme was telling the truth, about having an inside man who failed, which puts all the pieces into place.
Meanwhile, mom took her espresso and headed back to her laptop, whose monitor Alex had already set back to the screen that she was working on. Mom, oblivious to what just happened continued working and after some time, punched out of the building.
I carefully took the evidence and hand- ed it over to Agent Tanner the next morning. Although he scolded me quite a bit for breaking into a private fa- cility, the considerate man that he was, he did not proceed legally against me. The FBI found that Alex had transferred the biometric details of my mom to the chip used to sabotage the camer- as to frame her. Alex was arrested and sentenced to a decade of prison time. My Mom, meanwhile, fought fierce- ly against the virus and fortunately emerged victorious. I guess, earlier she was just too worried about her not be- ing able to help me that she couldn’t rally herself and fight the coronavirus. Anyway, she was back at work, and I was back in college in no time. And the rest, as they say, is history. Or the future for you!

REMEMBERING 2020... A YEAR OF RESILIENCE
A short glimpse of our lives, a year ago...
I exhaled and my vision was obscured by the fog. This fog was my new com- panion, which arrived as I started a dental procedure. I blinked and squint- ed to see through the film of tiny drop- lets. ‘Was it on my glasses? Or the face shield?’ I wondered as I gasped for air in the N95 mask. ‘Does this renowned respirator save you from the virus or gradually suffocate you to death?’, I mumbled to myself.
I grimaced as I endured the itch and sting on my face from all the new PPE gears. Oodles of sweat dripped down my back. I squirmed uncomfortably as my damp attire adhered to my body. Shrouded in the blue PPE gown and an abominable head cap over my hi- jab, drenched in the perspiration and blinded by the fog, I felt exhausted, dis- tressed and helpless.
Much had changed in the last few weeks. COVID-19, a new disease had emerged, and we were still learning about how the virus spreads and the severity of illness it causes. The virus had shown to persist in aerosols for hours, and on some surfaces for days under laboratory conditions.
The previously ubiquitous aerosols were now a great imminent threat to public health. Aerosols were always a part of dentistry. Aerosols were gen- erated during tooth preparation with a rotary instrument or air abrasion, during the use of an air-water syringe, during the use of an ultrasonic scaler and during air polishing.
In the pre-COVID era, as dentists we recognized that aerosols carried a po- tential for transmitting infections and engineered controls to reduce that risk. Unfortunately, we were unable to practice cutting-edge dentistry with- out producing aerosols. For me, it was like turning the clock back to a century. Without aerosols, all I could do was to either extract a tooth or write a pre- scription!
The plethora of dental procedures that I took a decade to learn and another half-decade to master was now listed
as ‘aerosol-generating’ and hence pro- hibited to carry out.
My once busy practice was now re- duced to seeing a few patients. I spent more time on the meticulous donning and doffing of PPE than performing procedures. I yearned for the good old carefree, COVID-free times where I could see, I could breathe, and I could still practice dentistry.
Every evening, as I left my clinic, I uttered a silent prayer for the Frontline Heroes working tirelessly to fight the pandem- ic. I sympathized with the brave doctors and nurses working round the clock, in unforgiving PPE outfits, in COVID wards and screening centers all around the world.
As a working mother, I had always craved to spend more time with my kids. When my working hours were reduced, I regarded it as a blessing in disguise, little did I know that I was no longer, just a ‘Mom’ to my kids. From being a fun parent, I transformed into an over-enthusiastic tutor teaching a first-grader English, Math, Hindi, Arabic and Quran. Back in school and college, I had enjoyed explaining difficult topics to my friends. I perceived Grade 1 would be a cakewalk. The unfortunate truth

Page 42
was that I had forgotten all the Hindi
I learnt in school two decades ago, my Arabic enunciation was rudimentary, and I had an awful struggle to tone down to the level of grade-1 English and Math. In short, the home-school- ing situation was a fiasco!
“No! Saira!” I fumed, thumping my fists against the table and letting out a loud sigh. A tiny pair of eyes behind ruby pink glasses looked up from the note- book and glanced at me, bewildered.
Her little life had changed drastically in the past few weeks. Two months ago, Saira was going to school, playing with her friends in the park, swimming on the beach, going to movies with her grandparents and enjoying random outings in the mall. Quite abruptly everything changed. Her school shut down one week before her KG grad- uation and the event was cancelled. The malls were closed, the parks were closed and so were the beaches. Her mom did not let her step out of the house.
She wanted to cycle outside, build sandcastles on the beach, chase her friends in the park and go to the mall with her Grandad. She missed the bus rides with her friends, the sleepover with her cousins and the car rides to her favourite confectionery. The new academic year of Grade1 began. To her mega-amazement, she did not have to go to school. She would be at home and her teachers would come on the computer screen. Computers were for grown-ups to work and kids to see car- toons occasionally. Till then, she was not allowed to play with her dad’s lap- top and now suddenly she owns one!
“This is Saira’s laptop”, her dad an- nounced, with a smile, on the day dis- tance learning started. Saira was super thrilled that she could sleep longer in the morning, grab a bite stealthily during class hours and wear a color dress every day. The teachers would not check her notebooks, she could talk in class if she clicked on the magic mute icon and she could even disappear if she clicked on the awesome camera icon. However, there was a teeny tiny issue. She wasn’t enjoying the com-
pany of her new classmate, her mom! Mom was unpredictable, would occa- sionally shoot the stare-of-impending- doom and for reasons unknown to her, kept on calling her name in varying decibels... “Saira... SairA.. SAIRA!!...”
As Ramadan 2020 started, an utter- ly-baffled Saira and a tea-deprived me meandered through the humongous pile of school assignments.
As education progressed, I recognized that my role wasn’t to teach but to fa- cilitate learning. I realized later, that my 6 year-old had a better mastery of the nuances of vocal articulation of Arabic. The truth is that I learnt more from my little girl than I expected.
Two-year-old Zayed was the happiest toddler in town. His days were filled with ease, adventure and fun. On weekdays, he woke up to the morn- ing cacophony of his sleep deprived mom- ‘Umma’ waking up his sleepy- head ‘Sairathatha’ for school. Umma wanted Saira to wake up but she wanted to snooze some more. Umma buzzed around Saira as she reluctantly brushed, got ready, refused to eat all the breakfast and finally picked her bag and ran off to the honking school bus.
After Sairathatha was packed off to the school; Umma fed, oiled, bathed, dried, moisturized, combed and dressed Zayed. Umma disappeared to get ready for the clinic. Zayed would stand on the day bed, press his tiny palms against the glass pane and peep out of the window into the parking lot across the busy street as he impatiently wait- ed for his best friend to arrive.
His best friend was his maternal gran- dad whom he fondly addressed as
Issue 1, 2021
‘Daddy’. Daddy had arrived in UAE, 4 decades ago with more responsibilities than dreams. The journey of 42 years was filled with ups and downs. He witnessed a dry-arid desert city trans- form to an ultra-modern commercial hub. Working in the energy sector, he contributed to various onshore and offshore petroleum projects. He was dedicated and hardworking and with an energetic and enterprising wife, they raised a family, strived to educate their two daughters, supported many relatives and bit-by-bit build a stable and secure nest back home. Daddy had turned 61, when he retired from his service. His wife was shining at her workplace. So, he decided to enjoy his retirement and let his workaholic wife pursue her banking career. Daddy val- ued every minute of his day during all the working years. Leisure was a new experience in his expat life. Zayed was the luckiest grandkid to experience this side of Daddy.
Daddy came to pick Zayed up and to- gether they would spend time on the road, in the mall or outside. Zayed was still learning two languages, Malayalam and English. He did not know how to address himself and called himself ‘Boy’. In his world, Daddy and Boy were thick as thieves.
They went shopping together and he knew all the items in all the aisles of Lulu. Daddy was the man who never said “No” to anything Boy asked. This was the man who bought him dough- nuts, M&Ms, candies and things his mom disapproved. Boy pointed and Daddy abided.
Two-year-olds want what they want when they want it. And nobody enter- tained Boy like Daddy. Together they went to the movies. Daddy would buy a tub of popcorn and they would munch in the theatre. When Boy was bored, he turned to Daddy and said, “Movie... vel- ly bad...poya” ( which translates to the movie is bad, let us go). Daddy would take Boy to Sparky’s once a week and Boy would have a blast.
On days that Daddy had errands to run, places to go or people to meet, Boy would tag along. The backseat of

his Daddy’s car was his happy place. He snacked, he saw sights and he slept. He was familiar with the streets and alleys, shops and showrooms, workshops and baqalas, coffee shops and cafeteria they frequented. He knew more places than his mom.
In March 2020, when the government shut malls and imposed a curfew, the happy routine of Zayed’s life came to a standstill. Previously, he was the king of his castle and he basked in the atten- tion everyone showered on him.
Strangely, something had changed. Uppa would lock himself in the room with a laptop. Boy was not allowed in- side as Uppa was working-from-home. Umma stopped pampering him in the morning. Umma was always sitting with Sairathatha and the laptop.
Sairathatha stopped seeing cartoons on the laptop and playing with him. She spent her mornings looking at the screen with various people in multiple tiny boxes. “I am in Class, Zaydu. Don’t come here”, she rebuked when he went near.
Boy did not understand why Daddy stopped visiting him. Sairatha, Umma and Uppa were home all the time and on all days. “Is it Friday?” he questioned. Fridays were the only days when Boy
saw everyone home. But unlike earlier Fridays, these days were no fun.
“Did Daddy go to Naadu?” he worriedly asked his sister one evening. The two weeks that Daddy had travelled to Naa- du, a couple of months back, were the most problematic days of his life.
Umma had enrolled Zayed in a nursery near her clinic and he had developed an instant dislike for their discipline and order. The teachers made him do art when he wanted to run around; they made him sit on the chair when he wanted to stand on the table; they made him draw and colour but he wanted to play in the playground. He was a free spirit imprisoned in this preposterous place. No matter how much he cried, protested and request- ed, his mom would mercilessly drop him off at the nursery gate. The ordeal ended when Daddy returned from Naadu.
If Daddy goes to Naadu, his small mind reasoned, he might be in trouble.
On a video call with Daddy, he com- plained, “No fun, Daddy. Come... Letsss goo tto Sparkysss”.
Daddy laughed and replied, “Sorry Boy! All shops in the mall are closed. There is Corona outside. Daddy is also just like
Page 43
Boy, sitting at home...” Boy’s eyes wid-
ened with concern.
“Eppo malls open ava?” (When will the malls open), he questioned.
“Daddy does not know. Pray that Coro- na will go away”. Boy’s face dropped in dismay.
He wanted to smash the bad guy Co- rona and save the day like the pups in Paw Patrol.
As night fell, Zayed stood on the day bed, pressed his tiny palms against the glass pane and peeped out of the win- dow into the deserted city. A police ve- hicle, flashing blue and red lights drove by, instructing the residents “to stay at home”. A white sanitization truck hissed noisily as it sprayed out clouds of disin- fectants.
Umma picked him up and planted a kiss on his chubby cheeks. He was fed, showered and dressed up in pyjamas. Tucked up in his bed, with his teddy in one hand, he lay near Uppa who was reading aloud his favourite book on di- nosaurs. Boy drifted off to sleep dream- ing about dinosaurs and rescue pups and happy kids playing in beaches and parks.
MOTHER OF ALL HORRORS
Oh, what a bane this pandemic has been It’s been so long since we’ve seen People roaming free-
No masks, no worries.
But now,
People are weeping for days ‘cause they’re parted in different ways
But there’s hope
If we can fight crisis and cope
Maybe someday we can regain our paradise If we just act wise.
